Talking Technique: Tapping into Tapping

Today we’re talking tapping! I get a lot of questions about tapping because of Oon, my duo with bassoonist Paul Hanson. I get to play chords, melodies, and grooves - sometimes at the same time. Tapping is a helpful technique to expand the possibilities of the bass, but it must be used with taste! Function comes first.
This lesson will get you started on tapping with a look at tapping on a 6-string versus a 4-string, how to get extra oomph out of your right hand, and how to use both hands to get more notes. We’ll also go over a few cool and accessible things to start on.

Very nice explanation. Thanks for switching to the 4-string for most of the video too! (made me feel slightly less inferior :P )

After working on this for a while, I am starting to see the benefits that a 6-string would offer. I find that I am often needing different notes on the same string and...well...that just doesn't work all at once.

I feel if one's approach to tapping itself is tasteful that it can be a primary playing style. I adore the fullness & subtly that can be utilized with the "piano approach".

This is awesome! I've seen others do it and figured it was something I'd never be able to do without years of playing, but you make it look super easy and so I'm totally going to try it!

I just watched the video snippets of OON. Such delicately pretty music. Personally I had always thought 6 string basses were ridiculous instruments until I saw you playing one. You handled the rhythm and bass sections with equal clarity, skill, taste and technique. Then again, I think you could make a washtub bass sing. Good God, did I see 11 tuning pegs on the guitar behind you on Dear Prudence?? Have you no limitations?

I was tapping a bass line for a song I helped write for a class and I tied a sock around the neck of my bass and everyone was confused about why I had a sock around my bass but everyone loved what I was playing LOL
@jroc6166
@jroc6166 4 года назад
What is the sock for?
@Error404xxx
@Error404xxx 4 года назад
@@jroc6166 it gets rid of the overtones that happen when you tap higher up on the fret board, tap on the 12th fret with and without a sock (or something similar) it cleans up the sound and makes a huge difference

A bit on the lower side is nice for tapping, but the thing is it will always be a compromise because you will be grooving and digging in with that same bass, too, so it is always a compromise! I set my six a little bit to the lower side but my four string is medium to higher action

So does the gain or volume on the amp have to be super loud to tap for it to sound useful? Nobody ever says anything about this.
@LearnBassWithAri
@LearnBassWithAri 5 лет назад
Because it doesn't. You get loudness by it being a small but explosive movement.

If you're only practicing you can wrap a sock around the neck. Not your neck, the bass neck and not the sock on your foot because then you will freeze ...
@LearnBassWithAri
@LearnBassWithAri 5 лет назад
@@pinkponyofprey1965 That was pretty funny, not your neck, haha! And yes, socks, hair ties (watch for metal parts!) all work. I really like those fret wraps for ease of on and off and because they don't loose their stretch, but anything goes except for cold feet!

@LearnBassWithAri
@LearnBassWithAri 5 лет назад
Don't. Believe me. I wish mine were bigger! It is, however, all in technique. Having small hands forced me to develop my technique, so it is a blessing in disguise. Btw, many people with very long fingers or large hands like basses with thicker necks or switching to 5 string (or even six) just to give their hands more room. In any event, we work with what we got. Don't let anything stop you, Nate!
