Me before the vid: "Could be a good opportunity for females in general to show how interest beings they can be in a typical male topic" I see the vid: your comment (P.S. Sorry for my bad english)
"My ex gave me this"..."I hate winding this watch"..."I don't like you bc you didn't increase in value".... And many other comments like this irked me.
I'm a female watch enthusiast and was so so pleased to see a 'talking watches' with ladies. However I must say I'm a little disappointed with the female guest. Though she had a interesting collection with some beautiful watches, there are really no stories behind them, other then her ex gave her this, of gifted her that. To say she gets annoyed with winding her watches too was disappointing too. That is part of your connection to your watch. Please please continue with this segment of including ladies in your content though, because we do love watches too.
She wants her watches to be like their men: just give her what she needs from them. In the case of them men is watches, in the case of the watches is something to match with her jacket or shoes. She even straight-face admits that "I wear most of them as jewelry, anyway" and Cara doesn't start to laugh uncontrollably, but actually nods in agreement.
I find women connect their things based on the relationships that lead them to it. I'm not saying this is 100% across all women, but I tend to break my life up into time units of what vehicle I was driving at the time, whereas my wife breaks her life up into which boyfriend she had at the time. I do wish the guest was a bit more focused on the story of the watch in the same way many guests talked about their fathers, but watches mean a different thing for men, I think. I think in the future, the interviewer should focus a bit more energy on drawing those sorts of questions out as well, if only to placate male watchers.
@@perthwatchgirl Thanks! I agree that it's not just about the guys, though I do think having a male interviewer should be on the table with female guests. I mean, I think the most heartfelt interview I've seen so far is the point when Alton Brown re-lived finding his Dad's watch on eBay. Those moments are just as much why I watch all this as much as John Mayer getting into the crunch of it.
I totally support having more women on talking watches, but I don't think this is as feminist as one might think. How many times did she say some variation of "my boyfriend gave me this"? And making fun of a guy who gifted you a hulk? Not cool. *Edit* Watch the Daniel Dae Kim episode. That is one of the reasons why I got into watches. THAT'S a watch collector (versus accumulator of expensive things).
The guy gave HER a present on HIS birthday. I agree that it normally isn't right to ask for a gift back after a relationship has ended, but the guy got it for her on his own birthday and he asked to buy it back from her. Then she proceeds to mock him and act like he's done some horrible thing. Disgusting.
The way I see it, the boyfriend bought himself the Hulk, wasn't man enough to wear it, so he pretended he bought it for his girlfriend instead. What a vain narcissist.
I’m all for women on Talking Watches but the charm of these episodes is to hear amazing stories around the watches. All this video is are; - I saw it and I bought it Or - my boyfriend bought me it/gave me it/told me to keep it
@@217jlam yea. I'm sick of seeing people with money and no taste. When you buy a piece bc the salesman at the AD talked you into it....your not into horology
and what shocked me most: she is annoyed about winding a watch and doesnt even set the time and calls herself a "collector" interested in mechanical watches? seems to be just about the money and the prestige not about the watches...
She collects watches that finds attractive. And she is interested in mechanicals because the watches at the status level she aspires to are unlikely to be quartz.
I guess this woman is their target audience now, rich beyond belief with little else going for them. I mean, they sell two hundred dollar plain calf watch straps that look and feel about the same quality as a thirty buck one, they now have a brand that people associate with being in the know. Just look at their app, very little actual reporting anymore and more about flogging expensive cameras and watches
Recent months? Recent years. I haven got Clymer himself to reply to comment i once made on one of their articles, complaining about the lack of depth in the content and clearly writing stuff only aimed at stroking the 1%rs ego. He basically replyed "if you're broke go elsewhere, couldn't care less".
@@scottrainey2375 it’s because some of the highest level pieces are hand wind only some of the best highly finished most detailed watches are hand wind only. If she were a hardcore enthusiast im positive she would appreciate that.
I'm annoyed that she refers to the details of the watches she owns as if the watches are one of a kind. Every Rose Gold Daytona 116505 I've seen has diamond baguette hour markers, and every 116508 green dial with gold Daytona has red circles on the chronos. It's like picking a given style out of a catalog. The same with her AP "dusted diamond" model; you can get the ap 67654bc.zz.1264bc.01 white gold model, or the 67654OR.ZZ.1264OR.01 rose gold model. It's referred to as the "Cascade." These aren't rare watches that are "hard to get", just hard to afford for most people.
Something weird with the dialogue/audio. Like they've edited out a load of BS that came out of bethenny. Shame this was their first female guest but I look forward to hearing from more female collectors
@@MPD90 That’s a total non sequitur. No one is worrying about gender. Cara has ‘searched high and low for 5 years for a female collector with pizzazz’ only to present us with Bethenny’s rather lacklustre passion for watches. Listening to an entitled vacuous airhead sharing her passion for collecting shiny expensive things is not the content any of us are hoping for. I’ve watched 1000s of hours of horological content on youtube and I have NEVER come across a female watch collector. I’m sure I’m not alone in harbouring curiosity for the interests and stories of a female collector. The search goes on.
I love this series. I’ve watched some multiple times. This episode was terrible though. Most of the watches are gifts and the the stories behind them aren’t deep on any level. There’s minimal technical knowledge. Bleh.
I wouldn’t say someone with a lot of watches is a collector, specially if they have a lot of money. Could just be a materialistic person. To me a collector has to really appreciate the watch for all aspects and not just the status it can bring
I have been a serious collector of men’s watches for 30+ years. Back when collecting watches was not a conversation or a woman’s interest. First time I see Hodinkee produce such a horrible piece. All the way around!
@@jordancolony5677 the comments aren't disparaging women. They're directed at her lack of true passion or genuine interest. They're mostly just trophy items from past relationships.
@domingowilfredjuan , yes you collect them. You go out and seek them out. Just like a coin collector. Even when someone goes out and collects cans for the aluminum. They go out and seek. If someone hands you something and you keep it. Your not collecting. You are receiving something and keeping it. Thus they are accumulating. I doubt people are handing you lots of patches. Your are seeking them out. Every collector will tell you that the most fun of this watch hobby(collecting) is the hunt. Difference between somebody that keeps and someone that collects.
Hmmm I think there lies the problem. I don’t think she did or the editing was not that great. Way too much focus on the how (she got the watches) and too less “why”. Questions the interviewer could have asked: Why did the boyfriend give her the watch, was that watch an object of desire for her before, what did she like about that watch, does it commemorate as specific occasion? What do you like about the XYZ, what do you think about the brand XYZ, how did you acquire this watch and why were you drawn to it so laser focused (as she claims to be). With steering the interview away from Ex’s and to the watches themselves it would have made it come across way more genuine. I would like to see more female collectors and interviewers!!
If I were her, I would be reminded of my ex every time I saw the green sub. I would be trying to offload the sub immediately. It seems as if she keeps the sub as a gloating piece. And now the gloat is out there for the world to see. (Perhaps that’s exactly what she wanted)
Winding is bonding, who dosent enjoy winding their beautiful watch ? The feeling of cranking the movement is just so enjoyable.. I need my time to be spot on to the second,I'm crazy that way... great collection that will never be fully apreceated, sad to me..
is this a watch interview or just your relationship and breakup stories. talks nothing like some who actually cares about watches more than the fashion.
OK, I see the critics posting here and there are some fair observations, but in this collection, I've seen some of the most gorgeous watches I've ever seen, period. Stunning designs, and in most cases, one rarely sees as most videos focus on the men's designs. Thanks Hodinkee, it's rare to have one's mind open up in a new direction. Strangely, I bought a ladies' G-Shock, but looked like a men's octagonal Casioak with a contrasting rubber strap, but it's a damn metal G-shock for £100!
I thinks it’s perfect. For awhile I thought HODINKEE was infallible. And this episode brought me back to reality. We needed this to appreciate the the overall consistency of the TW from the past...and I think we can learn moving forward. But oh my gosh this was so bad.
I hope Hodinkee do not misdiagnose the reaction to this video and try to claim that some viewers must be sexist. Frankel is the antithesis of every characteristic that hodinkee holds in high regard when discussing what makes a great collector. The fact that this discussion was so heavily edited tells you that even Hodinkee weren’t interested in a lot of what she had to say.
I’m glad to have these series back but I must say, she’s probably the female equivalent of Kevin O’Leary. Just a bit on the shallow side and most of her watches were just gifts from ex-boyfriends. I’m surprised she doesn’t call it her “collectione”😅
Interesting to see that comments on this episode on RU-vid are widely negative, whereas comments on Hodinkee website for this video are all positive. Thankfully there is no censorship here and Hodinkee can't filter comments like they do on their website. I wish Hodinkee would be less obsessed with celebrities (especially shallow ones) and more focused on true horology enthusiasts. One does not have to be rich and famous to be interesting. Especially with our hobby.

I can't precisely point out why, but that was awkward.
She turned a watch show into a reality tv show. She’s not a collector she just buys watches she thinks she needs to play the part. Worst talking watches episode yet
What a sickening display of an entitled faux feminist consumerist. I can think of so many interesting watch-collecting women and men who would benefit this channel and viewers alike! Ugh! Who the heck cares about what Ms. Frankel thinks about ANYTHING, let alone watches??
Embarrassed that she's the first female on talking watches??? Please just stop. No one cares who tf comes on these, we just want to talk about the watches and hear the reasoning behind the acquisitions of the watches.
RICHIE LUXURY Let’s not talk about how much money celebs have, really uninteresting. You can’t be a serious watch collector if you’re not prioritizing watches, so you need to have some money in order to attain some great pieces. Also it’s not that interesting to hear about how many watches she’s got from ongoing and past relationships. Almost all of the participants in this series have shit loads of money, so unless you criticize the whole platform I’m not biting. Honestly I would love to see Ellen because she is a serious watch collector. I’ve seen a 5204 on her wrist. You’re deep in if you swing like that. Great episode though, nice to see the elegante and the cartiers.
@@MPD90 Definitely not among my favourite episodes. I was eager to get my girlfriend more into watches, and I've been waiting for a female collector on talking watches to show her, unfortunately I will not be showing her this... My opinion is that there are several other more interesting individuals that would've been capable to communicate the culture more appropriately. This resembles a corny GQ "look at my iced out Nautilus" video. I find it confusing that Cara wouldn't want a more watch-culture-empowering woman to represent an important milestone like this. Take for instance Anna from Theo and Harris... Could've been pretty cool to witness that geek-off. Frankel clearly has things going on for herself and objectively speaking her collection beats the shit out most viewer's collections. I just think that it is a misrepresentation of the Dink's talking watches segment. In the same way that I wouldn't want/expect to see Soulja boy off in dis hoe.
The comments are... About as rough as I thought it would be. I'm just here to give Cara some support. She's a good gal and talented. You can't really help the guests are sometimes atrocious. Good effort here!
She may not be a typical true and hard-core collector that would satisfy the horological collector snobs out there but it’s a start. Women will gain more interest and education through this and the numerous Hodinkee content that may in time shape horological timepieces for women in the future.
Lady: "my boyfriend got me this one..." Lady: "and my boyfriend got me this one..." Lady: "and my ex-boyfriend got me this one..." Lady: "if you have good style, the key is, buy what you like"
Yeah I agree with the other posts... If Hodinkee is going to reach out to women watch enthusiasts more directly, then Ellen Degeneres is the one to get. I suspect she knows her stuff. Betheny’s stuff is mostly glitzy ‘Manhattan chic’ chick stuff - but then again that’s to be expected of her.
Went from "Talking Watches" to "Watches I've Taken" real quick. Left me with a really unpleasant feeling all throughout the video. Would definitely like to see more women collectors in the series but please Hodinkee, spend more time searching for your guests and please don't select them based on the size or dollar value of their collection, especially if a rich person was "gifted" them.
Did we really have to choose her as the 1st female interviewee? I personally believe there could have been many more relevant females to select from...I understand its about watches but the owner of the watches should be likable too..no?
Contrast this with the brooke shields episode. This one wouldn't sell a watch back to her ex. Brooke tracked down the brother of a dead guy who gave her a watch to try and return it.
Yikes, reactions to this ]video are tough, but I loved seeing Cara doing the interview, and have long awaited to see a female collector in the series! Excited for more, so don't be discouraged by other comments!
The comments have nothing to do with her being a female. There are a lot of females that would be great on Talking Watches. This particular collection (and woman) is very superficial.
Honestly so disappointed with Hodinkee for this. Totally rated you until this. I have no idea who she is but my god, I don't need to. Got it wrong here guys
I was much looking forward to a female guest on Talking Watches. I did not anticipate, however, that the female guest would embody every tired trope and stereotype about women in this historically male-dominated space. Somewhere there is a woman with a tasteful watch collection wishing that she could chuck her iPad at Bethenny Frankel.
Sure lol... still interesting to see what motivates some women to purchase certain watches. She does have some nice pieces, shiny or not! Just my opinion.
It’s great to see a woman on Talking Watches and I’m excited to see many more in the future. However, I felt that there could’ve been a better peson to interview from what I saw in the video. There are some amazing female collectors that I’ve seen on Instagram that I hope to see possibly on Talking Watches in the future.
I don't get all the hate in the comments. Her collection had some legit pieces. That diamond RO doesn't buy her any street cred, but Pras gets props for the Tuxedo (which was also dope, not taking anything from Pras)? And I don't think I've seen anything on Talking Watches as off the wall bananas as a quartz FP Journe. I thought it was refreshing to not see the normal cast of vintage Subs and stainless Daytonas. She didn't have one "investment" piece. It was all based on personal taste.
