Supplementation of cell media with fetal bovine serum #FBS (or fetal calf serum #FCS) is still common #CellCulture practice, yet comes with some severe #ethical and #reproducibility-related issues. Researchers are used to regular FBS batch testing: different batches can have very different effects on the cells. Yet, they are often unaware that this adds to the so-called #ReproducibilityCrisis, hampering the translation from #BenchToBedside, e.g. in #ClinicalStudies with #CellTherapeutics, but also regulatory #SafetyTesting of #chemicals and #pharmaceuticals. There are various flavors of #FBS-free media.
