From hobbyists building a clock out of a kit to professionals building one from scratch, clock building seems to be a popular woodworking pastime. Over the years, thousands of clocks have been made and a surprising number have survived. Nowhere is there a more interesting collection of old clocks than that of the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, Pennsylvania. Norm pays a visit to their collection for ideas for his version of a grandfather's clock. Inspired, he combines an Arts & Crafts-style case and some delightful sounding chimes into what is sure to become a family heirloom.

You have just taken me back to my childhood with my late grandparents. My late Granddaddy had a black Grandfather clock that he lovingly attended to all the time. The sounds from your beautiful clock took me home, so thank you!

This clock is sure another one of those New Yankee classics, that I think will sound great in these modern homes, and sometimes even libraries, as well! What a treasure!

I have always kept an eye out for any kind of chime clocks when we were visiting those second hand stores and flea markets and antique stores. But I was wondering how would a guy know when a clock was made and where it was made and the information about how you could find this out by looking at the markings on any clock? I have always and really appreciate the clocks that were handcrafted with such intricate details and design, especially the coo-coo clocks and the ones with the deer head over the top and the other ones with the oak leaf and stick design that were in this episode. And how long does it take for a craftsman to make one of those pieces? I once worked for a gentleman who was a collector of those type of clocks and he had one's very similar to the ones in the store on this episode and he would always invite me to come into his house and you could hear them going off , and the chime sounds they made were awesome and amazing to look at. But it was when I was young and saw my grandparents clock's that really caught my attention and inspired me to want to start my own collection of these timeless pieces of art. And this episode is the first one, that I was able to see one of these timeless pieces being built and the craftsmanship that it takes to build one? And Norm Abraham's knowledge and skills are the very best at what it takes to do this craft! I want to thank everyone who is responsible for the airing of these videos and a special thanks to Russ Morash for his part of the making of these programs. And God bless you guys and your families and have a great day.

I love that clock, but the walls in my apartment complex are so thin, that the entire neighborhood will think it's the End Times when it goes off. My favorite bit was when he was stalling the chime rods and it sounded like something out of Dr. Who.

Before we use any power tools, let’s talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.

It fills my heart with so much joy to see all the New Yankee Workshop videos coming to youtube. Used to watch this all the time with my dad. He died before I ever became a man and he was a spectacular tradesman and artist. Feel like I'm right back beside him when I watch these.

He makes it look easy. My parents had one of these clocks when I was growing up. I moved out at 19, and for six months, I could hear it chiming in my head.

@@167curly Yes. This was back in the 80s. I'm not sure when my parents got it. It was always there when I was growing up, I'm the youngest of 6 kids. One of my sisters has it now. I don't think it works though. Last time I saw it it wasn't running.

Yeah, I would always cherish the sounds of my childhood and bring back the memories of being at my grandparents house on the holidays and for visits and also for when there was a special event like a wedding or a family reunion and or a memorial gathering we were able to see our cousins again? It was when we all heard and saw the grandfather clocks and the wall mounted clocks that would chime every hour and half hour? My grandparents loved their clocks and so did everyone else. I could remember when I would sit next to the big tall grandfather clock and try to figure out how it works? But I will never forget one time It was my first memory of the grandfather clock, when I got into trouble because I was caught messing around with it and I had done something to it and my grandfather laid into me really good that time, and I was never able to go near it again. Until I got older and could appreciate it for what it was?

If you’re making this, it might be a good idea to put a bubble level or two inside if there’s a place to do it inconspicuously.

Russell- did you sponsor all of this type of road trips for Norm and camera crew, or was the PBS station it originally aired on the benefactor for the excursion? Because I have wondered about this for decades and now have access to the mind behind the sliding barn door 😅

Nice work and it’s true Arts and Crafts project with the oak! However the clock components like the chimes and other internal clock guts, those are not diy because you can easily screw up the internal clock guts! Let the internal clock parts be installed by a company or professional but the wood part you can do yourself!
@scotttovey
@scotttovey 25 дней назад
You could always get a 3D printer and print out the clock movements. It wouldn't be as nice as these though.
@4HBirtcher
@4HBirtcher 25 дней назад
This is why you can make the wood part of the clock yourself however the clockwork part you leave it with a PROFESSIONAL or better yet they’re places that sell a quartz movement and a way to get an electric version of the Westminster chimes like what I had a long time ago!
@rickstephens1130
@rickstephens1130 24 дня назад
But to me it's all a part of the craft, to be able to install the movement just as Norm Abraham did in the episode of how to build such a piece? Is what it's all about? I would at least give it a try and get the components from the place that is in the plans? And if I had any trouble with the installation? Then I would take it into a place that would be able to do it and try to be able to watch how it is done? So that I would know how to do it the next time? It can't be that difficult to install the movement? The movement is built in the factory where you would buy it from?

If I built this clock I would prefer to make up my own mind whether I could successfully fit the works myself without damaging them, after all I think I know my own abilities better than some anonymous YT commenter...
@scotttovey
@scotttovey 24 дня назад
@@rickstephens1130 Yes, but I would make a mod by making the movement adjustable towards the back and front of the cabinet. That way you don't have to bend the arms to line them up with the chimes. You simply turn and adjusting screw.
