Tallulah Bankhead's opening monologue involves Spring cleaning, the bulk storing of pills & the repercussions of consuming them. Guest Martha Raye jokes with Tallulah & then sings a beautiful version of "That Old Black Magic". From NBC's The Big Show, April 15th 1951.
***No, this is not Patsy & Edina from "Absolutey Fabulous" in the main photo. It is apparently Carol Channing {left} & Tallulah Bankhead in the 1950s.

I didn't know Martha Raye, she's so funny! And brave woman too. Tallulah, well I'm addicted to her! Both are great fun in this performance.

Martha Raye and Tallulah Bankhead were great friends. Tallulah had her as a guest many times on her "The Big Show" radio show and helped to promote Martha's Nightclub in Miami. It was the "5 O'Clock Club" which Tallulah promoted on this episode and Martha Raye thanked her for the "plug" as Martha called it.

The 5 O'clock stood on Collins and 22nd Street, near the famous 21st Street Beach, so Martha had lots of Tallulah's crowd coming in. The beach was a favorite of Clyde Tolsen and J. Edgar's. The Stonewall II Club and Bachelors were on the same street later on in the early 70s. I was a boy then, growing up on Miami Beach. I couldn't wait to grow up and go to such sophisticated clubs.

I trained for work with the Social Security Administration for a few months in 1972. I remember going to a lot of the clubs on Miami Beach and how charming the Cocoanut Grove area was at the time. It was a different time and a different place! @@albertmorris6162

I was lucky enough to meet Martha as a child @ marine HQ 8th and I street in D.C. what a charmer and she was in uniform that lovely day. My first (of many) celeb encounters! loved her as witchy poo!!!

Martha wasn't witchypoo, that role was played amazingly by the unforgettable Billy Hayes. Martha played the chief witch in one episode of HR Pufnstuf. And Mama Cass was in that episode as well when there was a witch's convention held on the island! That episode had amazing music in it. The witch's were like fabulous kooky 70s hippies with some kaleidoscopic trippy camera angles. I remember it well. Was very cool. On the Pufntsuf record album, there was a shot of Martha Raye as chief witch standing next to witchypoo. I always thought as a kid Martha had such massive big teeth! They stood out! I suppose her big choppers were her comedy trademark.

Jimmy Durante and others said Martha Raye had a set of legs on her that would make Betty Grable jealous. Martha was so funny and loved our soldiers and veterans so much. She had a beautiful voice that was overlooked because of her comedy. I will always remember and love her.

I thought Martha Raye was very pretty. She had a nice figure and was such a great singer! She had some soul and could dance so well. It was crazy how talented she was. Aside from her comedy, she was such a mega talent.

You are right. Martha's voice resembles Doris Day's a bit. I always found Doris a phenomenal singer too. That Old Black Magic. I love the arrangement. Very 1940-1950, with a heavenly choir like what Walt Disney used so often in his animation movies.

Martha Raye was a great actress and comedian as well as a singer. She was way ahead of her time and had a great sense of humor. God bless her.. Her later years were rather sad. She was taken advantage of by her very much younger gay husband.

Tallulah is so very funny - she reminds me of a good drag queen - icy, warm, sweetly sardonic, sultry and real !

Martha Raye was a comedienne known as The BIG Mouth! Married a young gay man in her final years who of course took care of her.
