Even if it has to be rebuilt down to the last plank, as long as it is constructed true to the original with full reverence and adoration of the original, it is the same vessel, just given a second lifetime. Keep in mind that when tally ho was originally built, nobody expected her to be seaworthy in even 50 years let alone that some mad lad would, in 2023, have her mostly rebuilt after buying her rotten, scrap yard bound husk for a dollar years earlier.

I believe the operation of a capstan was demonstrated in Scooby-Doo Where are you? If you can't get it off any other way, set fire to it. That has been my daughter's motto ever since she couldn't get the nylon nuts off the toilet seat. Just make sure to pull the batteries out of the smoke alarm first. It is amazing to me how they made something as utilitarian as a capstan for elegance back then. I'm glad you were able to get it apart, and I hope you can get it back in service. I hesitate to say this, because I think I embarrassed you in the past, but I'm glad to see you looking so well. I think the shop working is being much easier on you now too.

You did that pretty much exactly right, that cap was always going to end up as shrapnel. The only tip I'd impart about this sort of stuff is to dump the whole item in diesel or paraffin on day one and let it soak for years till you get to it. Lubricating it when you get round to the job is way too late.

@@philbert006 I was kind of thinking the same thing. If the tank is big enough, great. But, I would have poured some on top. If it leaked through the 2 holes he tapped, just plug them and fill that space to the top and let it sit for a couple days. I was thinking it was a tapper fit, so who knows if the fluid would seeped down, but it would have helped some.
@richardp.nathhorst9317
@richardp.nathhorst9317 Год назад
I agree that the capstan should have been sitting in a drum filled with diesel fuel or Evaporust for a couple of years before attempting a disassembly. In this case that wasn't gong to happen. The down side of soaking in oil would have been the smoke that would have come off it when it was then heated. The taper was not going to come apart without heating so the diesel would have been ugly cooking off. Considering the fact that the cap piece was already broken and missing a part of the rim, I think Keith made the correct call on destructive removal and recasting the part. I do hope the capstan project doesn't end up like the stoker engine however. By the way, where is the stoker engine now and what is its status? (We all have a project like the stoker engine.)

I and my buddy spent about 12hrs last week trying to persuade one single 5/8’ diameter hitch pin out of the hitch on my truck, saltwater galvanic corrossion is an exceptionally effective method of bonding two metals together. had to resort to total destructive methods to remove it, now I get a new hitch to go with the new hitch pins. nothing in my 68+ years I have ever seen stuck so badly. until I watched this video. it was everything we tried only on a much bigger scale. its miller time Keith.

If you wanted to remake it , you could with time and money. It will need reverse engineering, trial and error, sweat, tears, patience, and support from everyone here financially to make a new replica. This is your only option, unless you upgrade to a new non original model. Good luck, I will be watching you guys. Doing things like this are what Machinists are born to do, the impossible !!

All those large castings would've been hot dip galvanised originally, that's why you saw all that white smoke and the parts went yellow. Tally Ho was closely related to the pilot cutters of the era, so a big galvanised capstain would have been expected and was probably the only thing available in that era. I am impressed that there still seems to be a fair bit of the original galvanising on the castings.
@johnsherborne3245
@johnsherborne3245 Год назад
I quite agree on the galvanising and your reasoning is spot on too. I commented it might be Simpson Lawrence, a period Scottish maker of boat hardware, but I did some hunting and I think I’m wrong, Hereshoff used designs similar so I’m wondering if the capstan is an American replacement.?
@paristrout8469

@@johnsherborne3245 I too have been following Leo since the beginning, probably a lot closer than most. He does have some good early photos of the boat, but I don't know if there are any of the Capstan, to verify if this is original. Seeing as the boat was used for fishing the the Pacific Northwest for many years, the likelihood that it was replaced at some point is high, so I tend to agree with you. My thoughts are that someone else tried to get this apart in the past, and that is why there is a big chunk missing out of it. Beat on it too hard with a hammer in one spot and that is what happens. I did put together a list of yachts that raced the fastnet a while ago, and remarkably, there are a fair number of them them form that era that still exist. Might be able to compare the capstan's to get a better idea of where it came from. The only thing I can think of that might have helped with the ‘cap’ removal is a heavy duty pneumatic hammer - the kind mechanics use on big trucks. @16:30 " I think we have decided on what plan we are going to go with for fixing the cap" Nice to see the collaboration between channels on RU-vid. Three great channels working together on a truly historical project.

This is absolutely the most unique viewing experiences I've had the pleasure of witnessing in the restoration of Tally Ho. The dedication of Keith and Clark is truely inspiring and a wonderful compliment to Leo and his crew working on Tally Ho for so many years. I'm positive the 100 year old capstan will once again takes its place of honour on the bow of Tally Ho. Yet another remarkable achievement for Leo and the crew of Tally Ho.

Great to see you again, Keith. My hubby watched your vlogs faithfully on a daily basis for several years, and met you at an 'old iron' reunion near Chicago. He had a lot of respect for your talents. He wanted to stop in to see your shop, but never made it. He went to be with the Lord in 2020. Beautiful work on Leo's capstan.

I have removed many rusted/stuck parts over the years and the best way I have found is to concentrate all the heat to the center shaft, once it's cooled the rust and oxidation basically falls out, some heat would still be needed to remove thats how we remove big, seized pins from trailer rollers. That top cover needed recast anyway to be done right, of which I know it will be when your done. Keep up the great work

Leo is a true craftsman. All of that team has been just AMAZING to watch. I'll take them over "Acorn to Arabella" any day, but for more integrity reasons, and I won't follow them just for what they did in the past. I do get jealous watching Leo carve up those massive pieces of purple heart and just saying "I can't even afford his scraps"...LOL...I know he tries to keep the financials away, but once he launches I would love to know the final cost. I know it's going to be near $1Mil if not more. The lumber alone has to be up in that mid-six figure range. Truly a great series!

Leo used to give rough costs before he moved the boat to the yard in Port Townsend - I kept a running total. He spent at least $99,000 on hardwood that became part of the boat, that includes most of the shipping but not the rental for the drying kiln. Not included: deck planking, bulkhead & spar timber, teak for the deckhouses, softwood lumber for scaffolding & bracing, & pattern plywood. Add $36,500 for copper rod, bronze rod & ingot, & foundry costs.

Wow! Leo always brings in the best people for what is needed, it is great that you and Clark can help! Tackling iron that has been outside, including decades of salt water, must be a great challenge. (And no, I would never second guess you on this-that's why I watch you!)
