As you know, cocktail kits are awesome, but they have one issue--the kick drum causes the floor tom to sound off sympathetically with every thump. Some say it's part of the charm of a cocktail kit but I found the crosstalk a little annoying at times. I like the tones of the two separate and isolated. Solution: I found a great way to isolate the kick drum and floor tom from one another. Using the circular black padding that comes with the kit, I place the padding in between the floor tom and kick, and to keep it in place, I invert an unused 16" or 17" cymbal onto it. The cymbal's weight keeps the padding from slipping down into the kick, and it provides the necessary barrier to isolate and separate the kick from the floor tom! It works great! The kick may need to be miked for a better effect, but when I did, it sounded tight and punchy. Easy fix!
Thx Michael for your generous advice. I tried what you said ... and whilst it did not TOTALLY remove the floor tom's sympathetic resonance.... it sure did cut down a lot!
Do you know if they cymbal boom arm for the hihat can be set up so as to be to the left of the snare... know what I mean... so that it is the normal position of a hihat? Also... I am a very tall guy... 6'7" tall... do you think the snare could pulled sufficiently far from the kit on it's clamp, so as to allow proper setup? (because I have long legs I have to sit a little further back). Thanks for any insight you can give.
just fyi, this video is incorrect. the kit does NOT come with the hi-hat stand or cymbal stand. or any cymbals. just the drums. for $499.99 it is a great lil kit that I have purchased myself. I just purchased aftermarket heads for the kit and it should be noted a bass drum head will not fit on the bass drum. you have to buy a 16inch tom head. I bought a evans EC2 SST clear head for the bass and remo emperors for the 2 tom drums and will be putting a video up shortly.
@@vanseventy tama actually has a version 2.0 of this kit that comes with something to make the kick sound better now. If I lived in a city like NYC or somewhere with subways/trains/mass transit and I wanted a kit that I could easily move around, this would be it. However, I have since sold mine and created my own version of a cajon based cocktail kit that I play live. It has much better bottom end. It can do a lot of the basic kick/snare beats that go with country music down here(north Texas) and works like a normal rock kit with other genres. I’ve even mic’d it up as a full Rock kit. There’s a couple videos on my RU-vid channel using this setup. Check it out and let me know what ya think.
