Tama's U.S. Division Manager, Terry Bissette, joined us at Sweetwater Headquarters to give us an in-depth demo of the new Tama Starphonic series of snare drums: bit.ly/sw_starphonic. With features like these, you may wonder why snares haven't been built like this for years!

I've literally owned over a hundred snare drums in my drumming career and this is the first line of drums that I love every one of them. The consistency is unparalleled with anything I've ever used. I currently own the aluminum, the nickel-plated brass, and the 6x14 black nickel-plated steel limited edition. All of them obviously sound different but there is a certain consistency and a certain sound characteristic that is consistent in each one of them and I cannot emphasize how good they sound under a microphone in the studio or in a live context. Compared to my Ludwig black beauty or my Tama 40th Birch, or my Gretsch Bell brass or my Tama Rosewood these hold their weight with those drums all day and every day. Well done Tama...well done!

Going to revive a 4 y/o comment and ask which of them you'd keep if you had to narrow it down to one. Really stuck between the steel, aluminum, and copper. Thanks

@@queso5566 I ended up with the 14" steel. I couldn't decide, so I let price be the deciding factor. Fantastic drum.

@@jasonm3871 great! Are those hoops, die cast?

@@queso5566 they technically aren’t, but feel more like die cast than flanged. In fact, many confuse them for cast.

Best snares out there still. Quickest and least messy head changes without a doubt.

I have the snare drum that he was using in this video. I would recommend nothing else. This is the greatest sounding and most versatile snare drum i have ever used.

5:00 but is it really useful? From my experience, the bottom head on snare drum gets loose very much over time, so about once in a month I need to tighten the tuning rods to get the similar tuning. And because of that the head stretches and makes the hoop "dive" deeper into the drum. When replacing the head, the old head has about 5 mm higher collar than the new head, so basically, if I am changing the bottom head and want to keep the tuning similar, I also need to loosen the snare wires pretty much.

Very good video. Terry B. explains everything very clearly and plays well. Is he still with Sweetwater? This is the only video I have seen him in.

Where does one go to be able to try all of these 8 different materials to find out which one sounds best to them without having to buy first? I'm not even a drummer, but I would be interested in the difference between the steel, aluminum, brass, bell brass, stainless steel, bubinga and maple. Decisions...decisions....

I want a Copper Starphonic next. BUT, my 14x5.5” SLP Bubinga is just perfect. And the double side snare strainer is a necessity now.

So there's no over stretching of the snare wires occurring just before they snap in to place. That's excellent.

I would like to try a drum set with groove hoops! Similar to a Warlord Kit but in Starphonic Kit...

Are these snares suitable for hard rock rimshots? They look and sound great, but can they withstand a harder playing styles or should I rather get a Starclassic snare?

Love Tama drums but the concept of the lug casings remaining on the tension rod when changing heads is nothing new. Tama basically took Yamaha's idea (of many years ago) and modified the process. Yamaha's concept was a two-part lug casing. Back off the tension rod and the part of the lug casing that accepts the tension rod would "free itself" from the shell-mounted casing...great idea but Yamaha owns that one.

I told you a million times not to exaggerate. " A nightmare to change" & " It takes forever". C'mon Terry...get real.

So drummers are also responsible of us paying more to buy a Gibson ES-335 style guitar since they use the same tonewood...:-@ Can't Sweetwater just create subdivisions of their RU-vid channel so guitarists like myself won't be e-mailed about a snare drum video when they are subscribed? :/
