I’d need more information to try to help you figure it out. What devices are you trying to connect? Rereleases cannot connect with anything other than rereleases. If you go to the connect option and select visit on both devices, you will then need to orient the tops of the devices towards each other like I do in the video and then press the B/middle button on only one device. If you’re doing all of that exactly and a connection isn’t happening, can you tell me what does happen?

That is such a tough question! I’d recommend taking a look at some videos including the Uni (I have some, but there are tons of other wonderful videos out there from creators like Chilling with Kakujo, Ratamazone, Jill Grygas, and PandaBunny)! If you’re still unsure after that, then I’d personally say try weighing your budget against the prices. The Uni is about twice as expensive but has more than double the content with continued updates, but if you aren’t sure if you’ll enjoy caring for a digital pet as an adult then a Connection remake might be a good way to dip your toes in.
