it's not like they're weak. the fact that most of them still survive means they're not weak. it's just that the anime want to highlight how there are indeed people that's being exceptional (also if the side characters were given more screen time, it'll actually show how they arent weak at all). also, those exceptional people often have higher ambition / reasons to keep fighting than the rest of them all
