I love your approach. Sometimes percussionists spend so much time exploring "exotic" tambourine techniques we forget our own culture. Thank you for reminding us.!
When I went to hear Roy Haynes at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola this past September, I saw Herlin through a window recording this is an adjacent room. I'm so glad it's posted here. From the time that I first heard him, he has always been one of my favorites. Herlin takes from the past and utilizes it in ways that are unique to him. He is a "natural" musician with an original voice and everything he plays feels great! Thank You for this!
i been playing tambourine since a lil boy... i was real good @ it... i can still play... i started playing in church... i can't play as super fast as i use to... but others that i teach... i still love the tambourine... but the next generation is learning how to play much more better than me now... LOL & i enjoy every moment of it
This video was exactly what I needed from one of my favorite drummers. Herlin Riley gives off such a joy that you can even feel it playing along with him in RU-vid video.
I just love the simplicity of your tutuorial playing of the Tambourine, great job. After watching this video I'm not so intimidated by this wonderful sounding instrument. I'm going to purchase a beginners one, then if I can't get the rhythm together I'll give it to my children, if I do master it, ill buy myself a more expensive one, thanks for this video!
Omg!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this! I have been searching RU-vid for some type of tutorial for the longest time but never found much that would help. This video is like a epiphany. Thank you, thank you, thank you ❤❤❤
You are so cool!! This video made me so happy just because of how your smile and personality shines, and it is reflected in your music! Can't wait to try this!
Love it!! Exciting to see Dr. Riley use the same methods to teach the techniques! Notice: he's playing pandeiro-style right-handed, then switched to play Gospel-style...left-handed! Deep!!!! Of course, the most exciting thing to see is how HR's face and whole demeanor light up when he's playing the 'rine!
What a joyful and very informative video! And what amazing things this huge drummer and percussionist can do just with a seemingly very modest instrument like the tambourine! I could never imagine that it can actually sound like this... Amazing!!!
Thank you! I was looking for a good lesson on southern baptist/NOLA/jazz tambourine playing. This is exactly what I needed to move forward with my gospel album. Herlin Riley! You're awesome!
Thankk youuuu!!!! I’ve been determined to learn how to successfully play the tambourine for church and I know the basic. This just made it so much easier to understand the “flick of the wrist” lol which I cannot do yet. Can’t wait to try this!!!
I think this was a bit more than an intro/101 class... haha... but I appreciated feeling like there's so much to work up to in the tambourine world. :-)
Thank you for your lesson. I just started learning how to play the tambourine. This video gave me chills. Your infectious smile and mastery. I will invest more time to learn. Please make more videos if you can.
Thanks loads Herlin. Very informative, helpful and beautiful. I'm a former student of James Black and Johnny V., living in San Francisco. I can't wait to try it out and incorporate it into 2nd Line. Lessais Les Bon Temp Roulez!
Thank you. I've been really needing to learn this. I play percussion (and drums occasionally) for church.and I really need to learn the black gospel style of playing tambourine. This will give me the foundation I need. Thanks again. :)
August 9, 2023_22:47 pm: Good afternoon Mr. Riley! While observing your hand movements, I noticed similarities to my own hand movements when playing the 6" Brass Chinese Buddhist Temple Cymbals. You gave me sufficient hope for wanting to possibly explore the tambourine. Thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏💐👍👍👍
What's up Herlin? . Last time I went home down south ( to Dallas) I was playing Tambourine in Church :-) Someone was asking me about it because they were surprised. LOL . When I looked up lessons (for them) I was glad to see you. Thanks! Of course, I learned where you learned. In Church! Peace and Blessings my brother. Thank God for our upbringing.
Thanks! I stumbled on this by accident after searching RU-vid looking for good, understandable information on gospel playing. There are lots of good, inspiring examples, but not much in the way of quality teaching like you do here. Consider editing the title or tags to direct percussionists like me to your video.
You just gave away all my secrets for playing the tambourine. lol, thanks though. It'll help people who feel like a tambourine can just be struck and jingle and whalla they're in sync with the jam. The only thing I would add is that if a person is playing impromptu (without prior practice) with others who are singing live... follow the drum beat of the song. Don't create a whole new beat to their song because it can throw off the flow or vibe they are wanting to create. Oh, and build up to the finish - don't give it all away in the beginning or your hands will be tired later.
