Tamil Brahmins and Bhakti Revival 

I would guess that any regions where KC is being preached at low standard will suffer greatly in terms of Deity worship. People may not even aim at initiation, or they may be initiated at a low level so they are less likely to commit. I’ve heard a prominent figure in the movement totally dismissing Deity worship saying “you can just worship God in your mind or as the divine in another person” (?!?). Some may not even go to the temple for initiation. Temple necessarily is a beacon of vedic culture, if it isn’t, it becomes simply a house. I’ve also heard westernized preaching such as , “formal initiation is not important, not even necessary, not even an actual tradition, if you became interested in KC you are already initiated.” “Make your own altar at home and get whichever Deities you like and that’s all you need.” No initiation, no standards. This will have repercussions in what happens in the temple and of course in the type of people getting into the movement. If they become interested at all in Deities, it’s more like a “personal emotional connection” with not much relation to guru, sadhu and sastra. I’ve seen people for example with a Deity of Mahaprabhu and they deal with Him similarly to what some people do with Bal Gopal, like a baby doll that anyone can come and hug and take pictures with. Very relatable in a way, but what is it really, also very questionable.

How westernized bridge preaching may be undermining Deity worship, some thoughts. -Vegetarianism/veganism: the argument “eat food in mode of goodness, ahimsa food, it doesn’t matter much if it’s prasada or not”, the consequence: no concern for offering food, no concern for what Krishna wants to eat, giving preference to pleasing the conditioned soul rather than pleasing Krishna, thinking vegan is better than vegetarian because it’s “more ahimsa” and neglecting cow protection -Dress code: the argument “follow your own culture and just add Krishna, people won’t relate to devotees if they dress like Indians”, the consequence: if people don’t relate to devotees who are not dressed as western, will they relate to the Deity? It’s so ridiculous to even think of a Deity dressed in jeans and t-shirt that hopefully no one has done it yet, but it’s quite obvious that the Deity itself is representing Vedic culture so, reinforcing western culture will not make people more open to the Deity. -Feminism: the argument “there are no differences between males and females and women have been oppressed so give them more chances and leading roles”, consequences: mainly having women doing Deity worship - neglect of cleanliness standards, compromising motherhood and/or sadhana; having females “not relating” to Deity when they are males (Krishna-Balarama, Gaura-Nitay, Panca-tattva). -De-indianize: the argument “culture is just material so it’s superficial, not essential,” consequence: why worry about Deity worship (and all concerns related to it) when it’s not really part of western culture in any way? -Relaxed standards: the argument “just chant Hare Krishna and devotees who are actually advanced don’t worry too much about rules”, consequence: if devotees are not regulated how can they practice something highly regulated such as Deity worship? If they are basically just materialists pursuing careers who don’t take KC too seriously why take the “trouble” and “waste time” worshiping Deities? They may also think that making a lot of money and having degrees make them superior and don’t see how brahminical culture is actually superior. -Neglecting varnasrama: argument “that is just the old caste system, it’s sexist and outdated”, the consequence: No consideration for brahmacaria or sannyasa, or even vanaprastha life, or just taking those things very lightly (of course, they can’t be proper grhasthas either)and no brahminical culture (just giving thread for practical purposes) means no proper commited and properly trained pujaris; no farms connected to temple, everything is based on money (food, flowers, maintenance of devotees), no development of cow protection, means doing things properly becomes very expensive, then, offering plastic flower to Deity, no real flower garlands except on “special occasions”, no proper milk or ghee for offering. Money culture instead of actual wealth.
