In-Box Review of the stunning Tamiya F4U-1A Corsair in 1/32 scale.
Please note: When I speak of 'Highest scoring aces of the war', I am referring to the War in the Pacific, not WW2 overall.
Plus: in addition to the Congressional Medal of Honour, Major Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington was also awarded the US 'Purple Heart' medal for valour.
Sorry for some of the dodgy camera work, - but I have no overhead system, but wanted to show the kit sprues in more detail to do it justice...I might have been generous with my rating of the kit, (i.e. ignoring the ejector pin marks) but it is certainly one of the very best scale model kits out there.
Due to exchange rates and recent price increases, It currently retails for between about £125-£150 plus postage in the UK.

I love memories that come to mind when I look at certain builds I have done. Like a marriage of kit with movie etc. Scratch building usually does it every time because of the oddity of creating parts. Kit builds tend to slip by from repetition.

I believe Pappy would be quite impressed

When you say some of these were in rough condition you are not wrong. The RNZAF flew them in the pacific and at the end of hostilities there are stories they were almost falling out of the air. Good review. Cheers Stu

great review! im binge watching your videos! it was called whistling death because of the noise the air made as it went through/over the wing mounted radiators/ducts, alot of people think it was because of the engine! :)

Another wonderful video Peter. I'm afraid my modelling skills need to improve before I tackled this kit! I'm in the process of building a 1/35 Tamiya Churchill tank (following your advice to start with some armour) and I must say it's a great kit that fits together perfectly. Who would have thought as a kid in the 70's that you would end paying £120 for a model kit? I only paid £175 for my first car a Triumph dolomite!!

I have to say I have mixed feelings about Tamiya models. It's not the cheapest brand and sometimes i wish the instructions were a bit more clear. But maybe, just maybe I'm too much into Revell 🙂 But Tamiya is most of the time a real joy to build. I'm not really into Tamiya paints, I have a few of them but online it's easy to find matching paints by other paint manufacturers. Ok a bit more heresy then: I built Revell's Corsair in the same scale (04781) in the same three colour version with the red outlined roundels. Hu77 for dark Navy Blue, Hu144 for Intermediate Blue and.... whatever matt white paint I have for White.

Hi Peter, another great kit review mate. Would love to see Tamiya make the ME - 109 kit in 1/32.

Very fine looking kit, will you video build it? This is my first visit to your channel and I like it so much I subscribed. Thanks for the upload Peter and stay safe and healthy and I look forward to new videos :-) Cheerio from the Netherlands!

Hi Joffrey, thanks for your support! I am not a fan of video builds as they can be rather boring and need a lot of editing, but will probably do a photo montage of the build.👍🏻

“Pappy” Boyington was named pappy because he was much older than the other pilots in his squadron. He scored 26 kills and I believe is the highest in the Marine Corps. Richard Bong scored 40 kills and the highest ace in WW2 for the Americans. The bent wing came about because the propeller was couldn’t work on a straight wing. The Congressional Medal of Honor is also known as the Medal of Honor, the president of the US present the medal in the name of congress. It is a really confusing on the name of the medal. The tv series was not like by the veterans of VMF-214, they thought Pappy sold them out.

Hi Steph, There was a second reason for the bent wing, as it also meant the undercarriage was close to the ground enabling a shorter, stronger gear leg, ideal for carrier landings. 👍🏻

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab : Peter that might be true but the Corsair had a notorious problem of flipping over when they landed. The navy forbid the Corsair from carrier landings because of this problem. This reason was why the marines got the plane. It was the marines that proved the F4U could land on a carrier.

@@stephicohu Yes indeed, but I suggest you watch this doc: It seems The Royal Navy had the first success with deck landings with them: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-quo-AgC4ZiU.html

@@stephicohu No worries Stephi, I only learned about recently. There is a great book called 'The Kamikaze Hunters' by Will Iredale, about the Royal Navy Corsair squadrons in the pacific, its worth a read: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Kamikaze_Hunters
