In this video we spray up the Tamiya Panzer 38T in 1/35 scale with the new Mr Color 'German Grey' colours, Mr Color 513, 514, 515. We then take the model through the weathering stage and finish it off on a small base.

I like the series and your intent for it. It is also good for folks who are getting back into the hobby like I was a year ago. Back when I built models there wasn't dry pigments and enamel effects, so I had to learn what these products were used for and how the hobby has changed. Mostly for the better.

A very nice result. Great base and subtle weathering. Lovely work all round

Regarding the German grey: The original, used primarily on early vehicles was indeed very dark, almost black even. Also to be noted: the color was not dull, but semi-gloss, or even gloss. This is something that is actually quite common on many tanks.

Just finished this one myself , only the second tank I have built and was delighted with how easy the kit was to assemble, used some of the techniques you used in earlier videos and worked a treat , can't wait for the next one

The people that say some of this stuff does look real, don’t know what they are talking about. If they had ever been in the Real Military and been in the field for any amount of time, they would know how Tanks and other Armored vehicles really look. I have been in the Army and was in the field quit a bit so I know You are doing a good job. Keep it coming.

That panzer grey is super close. I like that very much. Also you are correct on the French campaign. Those would have been Ausf A, these E,Fs would have been delivered before and during Barbarossa. By the time the penultimate Ausf G was delivered they were all but obsolete and turned in to Marders.

Soudal superglue activator is a life saver for your track issue, a little spray and it's set. Highly recommend it.

I'm currently weathering the 1/48th Tamiya version of the 38t 🤣 The tracks are equally awkward in 1/48th. Great build 👍👍

One way to get rid of the ridge on Tamiya decals is to use hot water to put them in. It melts away the decal glue. Works great.

Great tutorial. I think we are getting close to a sweetspot about detail/skill/time spent. This is a great standard for begginers to achieve I think. Looking forward to try some of this myself

I like the idea on the carrier film of the decals. I don't know why Tamiya uses such a thick film. A lot of times I would go aftermarket just to avoid the problems. I'm going to give your very simple technique a go and see what I can do with it. Great idea!

Again, quite late to the party, but I wanted to pitch in on the question of what Dunkelgrau really looked like. First, colour film for non-pro cameras was hard to get, so a large number of 'colour' images & videos on YT are actually colourized versions that may or may not be accurate. Furthermore, as was the case with all brands, photographic film was prone to colour bias that varied from batch to batch, and from brand to brand. Furthermore, colour films were prone colour shift as they aged, colour shift when there was a long period of time between exposure & developing, colour shift when exposed to high temperatures, and colour shift when under/over-exposed. To complicate matters, one has to realize that the 'colour balance' of the light hitting the AFVs & softskin vehicles varied considerably by season, by latitude (e.g. fighting in Norway or near Leningrad, down to fighting in Greece, the Caucasus region & North Africa), as well as by the time of day, the cloud cover & levels of smoke each day and/or the colour of the landscapes (snow? mud? etc.). Additionally, the lenses on cameras of the day may have introduced their own colour shift, and that varied from manufacturer to manufacturer. From what I have seen, I would say that the popular photographic film used in consumer level cameras of the day, Agfa, did have a blue bias to it (similar to Ektachrome slide film, for those who remember it), and the lighting during much of the Soviet Union tended to be quite cool, except when the sun was very low & the sky exceptionally clear. As for the paint itself, it needs to be known that paint technology was not as advanced as it is today, and paints shifted in colour as they aged & as they were exposed to the elements. From what I have read, the German Dunkelgrau tended to get a 'chalky' film on it as it weathered, and it stained rather easily. Given the environmental extremes that German AFVs & softskin vehicles experienced & the continuous exposure to the elements the vehicles had, some alteration of the base Dunkelgrau paint was almost surely a significant issue, even with relatively new vehicles....and that does not include effects of dust, mud, etc. The bottom line: The exact tone of 'grey' that an observer would have seen probably varied from vehicle to vehicle, from location to location, and even from day to day! IMHO, the 'bluish' nature to Dunkelgrau was real, but probably very subtle.

@johnvoss7103
@johnvoss7103 3 года назад
People get impatient when gluing the likes of tracks, it’s better to pin one part done, let it dry then come back to pin the other part down, i’s done it myself but now i know better and patience is it’s own reward, i actually find myself doing it on all sorts of parts that need that kind of patience, again i know it’s tempting but it’s far less annoying later on when you see those mistakes then the ocd in the average modeller messes it up by trying to fix it after the fact, which then messes up paint jobs etc and seriously but who thumbs down model making, like these people are the best in the world at making models, the ego, arrogance and distain that takes is astounding.

I've built so many German tanks under the Dunkelgelb scheme so i'm desperately looking for something a bit more simple! Anything in Panzer Grey seems like the perfect choice. Perhaps an early war Panzer.
@ChampionScaleModelling
@ChampionScaleModelling 3 года назад
Good choice, just remember any German stuff from 39/40 would actually be Grey and Brown! Never easy! Pick a Barbarossa vehicle from 41/42 and you’ll be golden! I can highly recommend the new Panzer IV F from Tamiya 👍

@@ChampionScaleModelling I'm actually doing the old Panzer IV D now (the 1970s mould). Great value and even has the figures in the same position as the new Pzr IV F model :D In terms of the german grey I used Citadel Mechanicus Standard Grey in a rattle can to spray a 1:48 scale Pzr II from Tamiya then dry brushed some lighter greys over the top. Looks bloody good I reckon. Mechanicus Standard Grey definitely has some dark blue hues to it as well so gives a nice rich undertone and the lighter grey highlights pop a bit. Could whack some of that Mechanicus Grey from a pot in your airbrush and give it a whirl??
