My kit review, and full build of Tamiya's 1/48th Mosquito FB Mk VI, my first ever Tamiya Aircraft kit!
The most produced Mosquito variant, the FB.Mk VI, was a fighter-bomber powered by either the 1,460-hp Rolls-Royce Merlin 21 or Merlin 23 giving the aircraft a top speed of 380 mph, it had a range of 1,205 miles, which could be extended by a further 500 miles with underwing drop tanks. Armament would consist of four 20mm cannons and four 0.303-in machine-guns and either four 500lb bombs or from 1944 eight rocket projectiles and two 500lb bombs. The Mosquito Mk. VI prototype made its maiden flight on the 1st June 1942 and entered service the following year on the 11th May 1943. In total 2,305 examples were built and the Mosquito FB.Mk VI would equip over 20 squadrons serving over Europe and it would also see action in the Far East.

Most excellent. I learnt quite a lot from this video- especially the pre-shading technique. I have this kit in my stash, so I will be building it in due course and using what I have learnt. Thanks for posting! :)

Nice work. Exhaust stains on the Mosquito would run around the engine nacelle sides, and underwing, with some staining also on the undersides of the tailplane.

The red bits on the roundels are separate is because aircraft flown against the Jjapanese (usually Australian Airforce) left them off to avoid being mistaken for enemy aircraft. Tamiya just decided to do the decals that way to save printing costs.

Nice one.👍 I like your results with an appropriate amount of weathering, without overdoing it. I've just started to build my own Mossie. I reckon I'll select the No. 143 Sqn. RS625/NE-D in Coastal Command colours. Although after perusing Britmodeler, I may consider a different CC squadron with invasion stripes. Anyway, I think it's still quite a nice kit and certainly one of my favourite aircraft of all time.

I am currently in the middle of this build and I had a problem with the forward bulkhead in the cockpit assembly. It wasn’t perfectly perpendicular so when I enclosed it in the body it intruded and prevented the top cowling (just behind the nose cone) from seating properly. I had to do some shaving and some gap filling with putty.

Great build! What psi is your airbrush at for close up painting?

Thank you. The Psi was about 8 for the close up work, and the paints were over thinned slightly so as not to spiderweb when the airbrush is close to the surface

At 9:44, you mention panel lines? On the Wooden Wonder? A chap who generations past had built them recently had explained to us here in RU-vid that he and his mates had sanded and caulked with filler the edges of the plywood sections to create as smooth and as ærodynamically streamlined a finish as humanly possible.

Not all on the aircraft was wood, the engine nacelles were metal, as were the flaps and quite a few other parts

yep that cockpit glass is brutal to paint

That canopy is a pain to paint. I ended up with dust inside mine after I took the masking off. Not a fan of this trend in pre-shading. I don't see it as a reflection of reality. It looks cool but very cartoon like IMHO.

agree, i think the Mossie canopy is the worst of any Allied aircraft in terms of ease to paint. The Lanc canopy was easier to paint than that!

@@KABModelsI don't get on well with 1/48th scale anything though. I'm planning to build the 1/32nd scale version and assume that will be a bit easier to mask.

@@RichardsModellingAdventures I have restored a 32nd Mossie, the canopy was so big, i hand painted it, i wasnt going to waste time masking and airbrushing when i could paint it and rub off any over painting with a kebab stick and have it done in 15 mins

2:15 I believe the roundels come with the centre red separate because in south east Asia the red centres were painted over to stop them being confused with the Japanese round red insignia. So Tamiya is giving you the option!
