Can’t wait to see this one. Found a sound unit from Carson which might be of interest and not badly priced. It doesn’t include lights unfortunately. If you type Carson truck sound unit into google you’ll see it, they seem to cost around £50-£60. There’s probably no substitute for the proper full fat Tamiya MFU but as you said by the time you’ve bought the kit, MFU, radio, trailer etc you’re looking at around £1,000!!! It’s worth noting that if you did go for the Tamiya MFU you don’t need an ESC as there is one built into the MFU unit, also if you do add one it’s much, much easier to install whilst building the kit rather than adding it afterwards because a lot of dismantling would be involved. Another thing, the MFU unit, speaker and motor (yes there is a small motor with an off centre weight fitted to make the truck vibrate realistically!!!) fill the cab of the truck and you have to remove the seats and dashboard for it to fit!!! Anyway, it’s going to be very interesting to see where you go with this one and can’t wait to see that days off thunder paint job.
You are going to have a blast building that truck, the realism is out of this world. I started with one truck and now I have 3 as well as the tanker trailer which I still have to build, I haven't built it because I have no place to store it when built lol. Enjoy, can't wait to see your reaction!
Super excited about this one Glenn! Tamiya should be paying you for these videos because im sure a large percentage of your fans are going to rush out and buy one after they see the build video
Glenn I'm really pleased you did a vid on a truck because i think they're often overlooked and mighty impressive! I particularly luv the gear mechanisms mate!! They're so well made and so impressive! Overall these big trucks are something very special indeed and so impressive when built and running! I could imagine the building process to be such a joy also!? Thanks as always Glenn! I've really liked you doing something a bit different with last couple of videos mate, and I'm sure this will also help you broaden the appeal of the channel!? Wes, Liverpool, UK.
Good morning Glen!! Yeah different is the key word for the last 3 videos!!!!! You are much more braver than me!!! Good luck with this one!! But I will be watching for sure!! Thanks
I'm a big fan of the Radiolink RC6GS 6 channel transmitter. It's only $85 in the US and receivers are between $14 and $25 depending on features. They're readily available on Amazon. They have e a ton of settings and are easy to use. If I remember correctly, RCKicks did a review of the 4 channel awhile back. I use it for drift, on road, and buggy racing (non competitive) with no issue. Looking forward to the build video(s)!
just ger on wiv it !! these are fantastic to build I'm like you only did cars and buggies but last year i treated myself to a Scania one year on I'm still adding things and improving it. i use this setup with mine Flysky FS-i6X6CH RC Transmitter with FS-iA6B-Receiver.
Really looking forward to all the new up and coming content. The truck looks crazy and the days of thunder livery is going to look sick. The new TRF touring car is right up my street can’t wait to see how that turns out. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Glenn will be really interested in watching the build. Not something I would have thought of buying but have seen a few now and are growing on me thanks for posting
Going to love this one and that paint scheme will look amazing.. That Tamiya adult section made me chuckle but I get what you mean, I dont know many kids who get one of these under the Christmas tree.. It was always the Dads that had them with them being so expensive
It’s great that you are branching out, I have never thought about the trucks but will be interested to see the build and run videos. Maybe a truck and trailer assault course as I’m pretty sure this is one to spec that is as much fun in reverse as going forwards 🙂
I was waiting for you to suggest TRF livery! Not been that interested in running trucks - but I think the build will be great, so really looking forward to this one.
Very cool to see you get a semi truck...I am still new to your channel, so catching up on older videos....but I have built two semi kits from the box, first was a MAN 540 6x4, then the second was a Knight Hauler. I have also recently acquired three more trucks and multitudes big parts...enough that I just build another euro style rolling chassis. I have made my own light kits using common sense or similar controllers and making my own leads. I have gotten my lights and all from Amazon. As for sound, only the MAN has sound at this time, and that is an Ess One sound unit. As for radios, it depends if you want stick or pistol grip style, but radiolink has a number of possible ones you can use for under $100 USD. I have stick radios on mine, two are flysky, and one is another knock off type that I got with a plane that I got just as a hanging display, lol! These trucks are fun and very addictive, so watch out! I have done a few videos on my trucks on my channel as well of you want to see them, I am also in most of the truck groups...if you have any questions I can answer please let me know sir.
hey Glenn, this is a brilliant idea, I think iy will amazing as these things are very impressive when built :) surely you need to go all in here and not only build this truck with the days of thunder trailer but build a couple of days of thunder cars to go in the back of it too - lats do a tamya legends mega build!!! If you pull this one off you will truly be a tamya legend my friend :)
That's sweet, looking forward to the build vids :), living in the UK I've always loved the USA trucks, one day I'll get a Kenworth K100 and do a BJ And The Bear truck
Lol!! Loving how you are mixing it up lately. Fantastic stuff! Love this kind of truck too! (Just dont paint it in TRF colours!!!😄👍........ ...or maybe!🤔) Also, you have to get a trailer!👍
Very nice addition to your channel, can't wait to see it finished! I've got the same kit waiting for me to build it when I get around to it. I plan to paint it metallic red and add some white stripes like the 1/24th scale Italeri Ford Aeromax 120 kit I have built several years ago. When looking for a radio set, it's a good idea to look at the 6 channel Flysky/Turnigy i6 set. These come out of China pretty cheap, about 40 euros for a transmitter and receiver set. Don't know how much handling and transportation fees will add in your case. When looking for sound and light units nothing beats the Tamiya MFC unit, but these are very expensive and cost about the same as the kit itself. You could look at the GT Power sound and light sets, these are a bit cheaper but don't offer such great quality. Take a look at the Hobbyconcepts RU-vid channel for more info. Personally I shop all my kits and other stuff in Germany, prices are considerably lower there than they are here in the Netherlands. For example, the Tamiya MFC-01 unit for this truck will "only" cost you 285 euros excluding shipping costs on www.modellbau-berlinski.de. When going down this road, don't forget to buy a light set for a trailer, since the socket for the trailer has to be built into the sleeper section of the truck, it's a real pain when you have to go back later to add this part. One tip on building the gearbox if I may, please DON'T use ball bearings on the sliding gear, ball bearings aren't made to slide along a rod. The bronze bushings supplied with the kit are better suited in that gear. Oh, and don't forget to glue them to the gear. Have fun building this one, I'll be looking forward to seeing the result on this channel!
That is going to be a great project I can't wait to see it go together. If you are going to have a dedicated 4 channel radio for that truck I might look for a good used surface FM radio. Your not going to be far away from it . You could hide the antenna in the sleeper bunk in back of the truck. You don't need any of the bells and whistles of a new high end radio for that specific truck . There also should be a fair number of older 2.4GHZ used 4 channel radios on the market as well. The light and sound kit is cool but I'm with you it is expensive for what it is. You could get a great radio or another model for the price of the sound and light kit.
Futaba t6 transmitter and receiver you can get for about 75, carson do a fairly cheap sound unit. Personally I just went for the killer bodies light kit for about 10 to 12 pounds and made the wires fit along the chassis. The other big improvement is oil front dampers, if you are feeling flush then do the rear too but it loses the scale look a bit as the oil ones don't move as fast but do help when going over uneven ground. The other upgrade that is a must from firsr build is the trf black diff putty, I used oils but kept leaking out, the puttt works very well.
A really fun surprise. the 1/14 tractor tucks have endless expansion possibilities. It will be fun to follow the construction. When you revealed the color scheme, I first thought. It will be in TRF colors and with a trailer for some TRF buggy. 🤣
Nice mate, iv recently bought a grand hauler, with the mfu and the 40ft reefer trailer... im building it in stages as well im abit overwhelmed by how many parts there are lol the wiring is everywhere but it will be nice to have. I believe the gt power unit does the same as the tamiya mfu and its cheaper. And im using a dx6i radio which works well once you have set it up, theres videos on here telling you how to set the switches up. Good luck with the build 👍🏻 looking forward to seeing what you do with it
This is great Glenn, and amusing; I started looking at them a month or so ago, and have just built a King Hauler, and done a Smokey & The Bandit version - you'll love it; and be VERY surprised at how large they are! Enjoy the build!
It's not something I would buy but really glad you have because now I get to see something I know absolutely nothing about without putting my hand in my pocket haha. Think it's going to look awesome in the days of thunder colours.
I have that exact kit, still stuck somewhere in a box, about 2 years after I bought it. Truth be told, the thought of building it, with all its complicated optional mfc01 electronics wired in, is daunting.
Thoroughly excited for this one, i've wanted one for the longest time. The cost is the only thing keeping me at bay, because i know i would want the light and sound kits along with a trailer.
Wow Glen very different.. must be honest I would never consider one myself.. That said it looks great.. clearly the details you could add I bet are endless.. I bet you could spend a few Bob on it as well!!!. Really interested to see it come together.. Maybe look at the Carson radio gear.. I like it because they still offer twin stick which I prefer.. It’s decent kit for pretty good prices
Bang on, one's taste change over time. Get the G part (is the same one for the XC or CC) to lock the diffs. Your next dish is Tamiya 1/16 tank especially the older German ones which could be hard to get. These kits first came out over 30 yrs. ago, that's how advance Tamiya was.
Hello nice truck kit will be good when all done. I'm after the grand hauler kit but you are right very expensive..😞 I use a radiolink 6channel transmitter in my gmade double cab very good system as I have full lights in it.. 👍👍
I wished Tamiya had can out with different models of semi trucks. The American trucks are the best looking trucks in my opinion and the Freightliner Cascadia was the last great truck they came out with.
It's going to be really interesting following this one - these rigs have been growing on me too, lately. Not that I can figure out what I'd even do with it if I built one... 🤷🏼♂️🤣
Glen, I have 2 trucks, the driving fun is not really there but the build and sound and light setup is great value for money, enjoy. What ever you do do not watch videos from yamamoto factory, these are done extrodinary lengths!
Careful mate your gonna find this addictive. It’s funny because this is going to be my next project too. As for the kit try looking up GT power light and sound vibration kit, also Flysky GT5 six channel radio which are both good value.
I sooooo want to build one! Got into watching Loading Kings/Wars on RC Sparks! I thought you might have done it as a Tamiya TRF hauler. Same idea you have but with the TRF paint scheme!
I know what I’m about to say is gonna be expensive! Lol but I would get a flat back for it then make a ‘ days of thunder ‘ nascar 1/10 and have it on the back. All in the correct colour scheme. Imagine pulling up in the truck and reversing the nascar off it, would make the ultimate shelf queen too, you may need a bigger shelf tho ! 🤔👍
Cant wait to see this at the gravel track jumping some doubles! In all seriousness, this one looks like a fun build. As for radiogear, you could consider the 8 channel ko-propo that looks like a console controller, might be fun for the truck, as it might be quite handy for a truck? :D
Damn you sir! Just ordered a Grand Hauler Matte Black edition Smoky and the bandit or moon shine bandits theme? You must check rear fenders on this rig for our build!
I've been keeping my eyes open for a used roller of one of any Tamiya 1/14 truck kits like this. I have a 1/14 scale new bright ladder truck fire engine that this chassis would work a charm to upgrade it to something hobby grade under the body.
85 Canadian on Amazon for the i6x. If you get the i6 non x, you can mod it to be a 16 channel radio. Also, ess sound one is a decent sound kit. I have one, and it's works great. Can be harder to find.
I would recommend the Flysky I6 radio. You just have to retrofit the right stick to self center. You need a 6 channel radio. You don't need the Attack radio. The Tamiya MFC-01 is the only way to go. It is worth the investment. Just go on ebay for. The best price.
