I loved building my grand hauler, Tamiya 3 speed gearboxes are really nice to build in the trucks and the 4x4's. Thread lock is used if you fit a vibration motor as shakes the truck to pieces. Mine is still on going. So much to do on these trucks. Great video glen 👍.
Whoever clicked thumbs down needs to have their thumb chopped off. It's an amazing build it's something I've always wanted to do. Even knows it's not racing and 8th scale or Nitro. Very interesting. And it don't matter your age everybody knows days of thunder, mind you I am in the deep south of Georgia. Favorite line that movie is when the doctor tells cole trickle,( let me out of the car cole let me out of car!) In a fake Boston accent. That movie just has deep cells all over it. But it is a classic. Keep it up .the build looks amazing can't wait to see it finished. I think it's persuaded me to do one myself and I have my own little ideas and projects for it!
Come to America those things fly down the interstate highways at 90,s at least on occasions but high 70,s to 80 is average they do move yea it takes awhile but when they get up to speed and put it in 18th gear there moving.. it’s a great kit.
Man I built one of those way back in 1997! Painted white, I replaced the cheap chrome wheels for the more realistic Rc4wd diesel white steel wheels! And it looks awesome! The only thing I haven’t done is install the electronics, it’s been a shelf queen since 97! I do want to finish it. It’s been way too long!😂nice job on yours!👌😎👍
Glenn..... The Rear Suspension is called a "Walking Beam". It's how the twin Axles articulate over rough pavement. 😉 WELCOME to an Elite Group!!! 😁👍👍🖖 I've started my second Truck this week. After my Inheritance, I bought four Trucks and three Trailers - and some HIGH TECH Electronics! The Tamiya MFC-01 is perfectly acceptable and quite impressive. But I got Beier Sound/Light Systems from Germany. I can CHOOSE what Engine Sounds I want, choose how the Lights operate, and how many, and much more! 😁 Advice...... You said you DIDN'T use any Threadlock. If you fit a MFC-01 (which most do), you WILL regret not securing the hardware. The Sound System includes a Vibration Unit to simulate rough idle and Clutch release.... It WILL shake your Truck apart!!! 😵 Hopefully, you run it with Trailer. You will have a NEW Hobby!! 😁 From the beginning of your Video.... You said that the build is done, but feel there's twice the amount of work to finish...... Well... If you add lights, it's 3X the amount of work. If you add the MFC-01, it's 5X the work!! But I can promise, knowing your passion for the Hobby - you'll love every single minute!
This is the quality of the older tamiya kits from the 70s . I had a motorized F1 car that was as big as this truck. It had a stick shift transmission with live rear axles and rack and pinion steering and suspension. It's the best kit I've ever had . It was gorgeous.
Those trucks are tamiya’s finest kits. I have the aeromax, tow truck and globe liner. The Aeromax is completely custom with triple axle rear end and stretched 5.5”. You can go crazy with them and the sky is the limit. Great job Glenn.
Wow that's some piece of kit that Glenn!! I absolutely luv that gearbox!! The size and presence of it is incredible also!! I watched a couple RU-vid vids before with this truck fitted with a sound sound system!! Mega cool! These Trucks, and their build quality etc, are pure vintage Tamiya mate!! It's why i always will luv the Tamiya brand my friend! Thanks Glenn! Wes, Liverpool, UK
Trucks are fun to build. Do you know that the High-Lift trucks use mostly the same gearbox, but with other end plates. different housing and a transfer box at the bottom? Motor is also moved on those. High-Lift and TLT-1 axles are based on the truck axles, so if any need parts for those, regarding diffs, trucks use the same parts. TLT axles is the axle that is most similar to the trucks in shape, only wider and with TA04 steering parts. A popular mod is to make these trucks 6x6 by using TLT axle, mod the gearbox or fit a transfer box. Getribedoctor in Germany specialize in those axles and gearboxes for 6x6. Axles can even have selectable diff lock. But beware, those parts are not cheap! I have actually have 3 axles from him on a project I build with difflock and 6x6. Have also built loads of project with HL and TLT axles. But axles are getting a bit more hard to come by nowdays. And btw you get alluminium axle housings, but not from Tamiya. Lesu is the biggest maker of aftermarket parts for these trucks, including axles. RC4wd used to make aluminium axle housings for trucks, HL and TLT. But those are discontinued several years ago. Richard
Good to see this one taking shape 👍🏻. They do look a lot of money sitting on the Shop shelf but as you have discovered it’s all in the extensive build experience. You get a heck of a lot of parts for your money. Light & Sound modules add another dimension to. You are flying along with yours though, it took me 6 months to finish my Knight Hauler.
Hey Glenn, don’t know if this has been mentioned but for those low friction steel suspension balls for kits like the TT-01, TT-02, FF-03, etc. the way I’ve installed them without hurting my fingers was to use a small C-clamp and sort of “press” them in carefully. Was building a set of the TT-02 adjustable upper arms and the c-clamp trick worked a treat. Just wanted to share the tip with anyone struggling with kit parts or someone having difficulty with the uprated parts like me.
Wow, those Tamiya truck kits are freaking awesome! I'm very, very tempted to get one at some point, maybe next year, not sure which one yet though or what colour scheme I'd use on it either. Great video as always, really looking forward to seeing it finished and running!!
Great video 1ce again Glenn. Still building my Mountain Rider.... loving it 👌. Normally smash a kit out in a weekend, the body has taken me 3 weekend's alone and I've not got it together yet! Very different but excellent build. Thanks for another brilliant video mate 👍
Great video Glenn. I´m still thinking about adding a Tamiya semi to my collection. But if I buy one, I probably want the MFC, some hop-ups and a trailer. And then I get scared of the prices. But at least seeing my TRX-4 until now had cost me over 2,000 EUR, let me dream of these trucks, again. The thread lock makes a lot of sense. The whole rig is rattling and shaking, when in use. Especially when your using the MFC with the brass weight to simulate the motor vibrations.😉
Glen, check your orientations of your rear difs. theres two bump stops that need to face upwards towards the sky when the build is complete. in the photos you showed they were upside down. they look like rectangular nubs on the case :)
That's going to look superb mate👍 never built any of the tamiya trucks but from what I've seen it can be an endless task (and you've got to have deep pockets)
Brilliant Glenn, Days of thunder is one of my favourite car films, and that colour scheme is the best one from the film out of all the cars Cole drove, I think this will look really good when she's finished 👌💯👍
Lovely work mate, I made the mistake of building a truck a few years ago.....I'm on number 4 now! they are great to have a break from the norm for sure!
Cant wait to see the finished Truck, it looks like a really fun project. I've been close to buying trucks from time to time, but I got too long a pile of shame to get something taht involved atm :D
Great video....... :) Awesome kit...... Always fancied a Tamiya truck..... but can't afford that Rabbit hole. I've spoken to someone that has a couple..... fully customised...... he didn't say how much in total he'd spent..... but it was close to £10 thousand on both kits, trailers, radio gear and add ons..... (They do look amazing though)
these things look like an amazing kit to build and I will have to get one.. you need to do the talladega nights paint scheme next and it has to have the cougar on the hood :)
Congratulations on your first tamiya truck, you'll definitely get more....I've got 7 trucks and 9 trailers (can't help myself) 🤣🤣🤣 Anyway, great RU-vid videos!!!!
@@TAMIYALegends Yes 🤣🤣🤣 I'd change the standard motor in your aeromax for a crawler motor (80t) I've got Carson poison motors in all of mine, much more torque and realistic scale speed (tamiya one is far to fast) but you'll figure it all out 👍👍👍
Great video again glenn. Try downloading the manual for the R620 truck and compare it with the aeromax, see if the chassis have any common mounting holes. Also the chassis rails being aluminium you can drill new holes if needed too. Best regards jason
There's another guy that builds the tamiya truck kits on yt and trailers and some scratch stuff when necessary. If you're interested I can let you know the name of his channel. He's an older laid back retiree. A real craftsman
Superb video.....I really gained info on this......and the timing so Glenn impeccable cause I was just looking into tamiya trucks, really appreciate it my friend.....and what's your take away for the Tamiya King Hauler planed to get one.
The Days of Thunder truck is actually quite plain. Mostly just white and just a few lines on the trailer in green and yellow. Matchbox once made a model of the Kenworth Aerodyne truck.
When it comes to threadlock.. if you were using the multi function unit system with the shaker device you would definitely need it as it would rattle the screws out. If you dip your toe in another truck I could suggest the Mercedes 1850L delivery truck.. it's a truck on my to get list .. I'll send you a photo of it through Instagram...
Yeah quite possibly 🤣 I’ve just got a driver figure for it and the radio gear is on its way, so hopefully won’t be too long until I get cracking on it Rob 😍👊🏻
days of thunder was and still is a brilliant film and that livery is great also as for the tyre stickers use the smaller ones(1/10) as the larger ones look just wrong and out of scale i have the small ones on my 2 trucks oh and where did you get that poster of the truck made that you put up on the notification of this video
You said the XR311 was best kit to put together? 😕 Right so I do want a truck but there’s a few issues. 1- they are many many Tamiya tokens. 2- I’d want the Grand Hauler plus the fuel tanker trailer 3- Tamiya keep releasing buggy’s and cars I want so truck goes further down the list. Need to win lottery 🤞
@@TAMIYALegends that's very true, even the mfc unit that makes the noise for engine is about 259, but its the realism of the truck once you finished it 👌
Most turn at the same time, but when one gear set engage, the other is disconnected, but they still turn. That's how manual geatboxes work. Easier to see if you connect the output to a drill and then select the gears going from 1 to 3rd. The gears on top shaft is fixed by splines so they can't move. Forks on the bottom engange which gear that power will go through. 1st gear is closes to the motor down and along bottom shaft and power then goes throu the gears at end. Second gear is gears in the middle, down to bottom shaft and up via the end gears. 3rd gear is straight throug the top shaft. The gears at the bottom are then disconnected so the they just follow along. All gears do spin at the same time, but power is not transmitted throgh all gears at the same time. That's how a manual gearbox works. On a real truck there would been a clutch between the motor and gearbox which works like a soft on or off switch if you will. I have never understand auto gearboxes even after explained thousand times.. Hope that explains a bit. There was a chart somewhere that showed the power way in each gear at some point, but I can not find it anymore...
