I had one when it was released many years ago now. I learnt pretty quickly that I could turn the wheelie bar upside down it kept the front wheels on the ground and taking off the motor mount and putting a conventional 32dp 18t pinion on it, boy did it go.
My stock esc went bad. I replaced it with a Hobbywing brushed esc. Cut off the stock power switch and soldered it to the Hobbywing power switch wires so I could keep using the stock power switch in its original location. Great video.

Very good and interesting video! I made my lunchbox double wishbone front suspension mod very long ago. But it was using 3d printed arms which break easily. Love to see, that there is an adaptation of DT02 arms.
Great video as always, Damian! This one it's clear you put a lot of work into, and it's got a lot of vies already, well deserved! The idea to use DT-02 components is great! I ended up using TT-02B parts on mine, my wheels are with 12mm hex, so that worked alright... That's what I love about the Tamiya stuff, a bit of modifying, there is an almost endless supply of parts available, ha ha!
The last thing i need is someone telling me how to upgrade one of my Tamiya kits! Ill be ordering all the parts needed dor the front suspension 😂 The lunchbox is my absolute favorite chassis i have in my collection 👍 Thank you dorbthe list of parts

Love it , the body mount washers are a good idea , i use the little o-rings from the cva shocks on mine - the never fall offand keeps the body nice n tight to the mounts
IMO the least frustrating path to converting Tamiyas to brushless power is a 3000kv F540 - aka 2838-size motor in a 540-size can. The motors tend to be about $15 and any cheap 35a ESC will be fine, and you don't need to buy anything else for a drop-in replacement that gives you a big power boost and better battery life. Lunch Box/Grasshopper type gearboxes can handle the increased power without any problem but as you know, the higher speeds means more broken parts when you crash.
Great presentation fella! The lunchbox has to be the best value RC kit ever made,I've built and customised many over the years. It's simple, slow, has a poor turning radius, awful center of gravity and spends half of its time on its roof!! But, all these factors in turn are actually what makes it such damn fun to drive! Yours looks awesome, both in action, and standing still. Great summary of potential upgrades man, I've done most over the years..... except the double wishbone/widening, which looks very interesting indeed. May have to get on that one, cheers for sharing! 😊 👍 👍 👍
Great comment and thanks for the feedback. I am looking forward to more run time and searching for new spots to take it. It's satisfying to find the right jump in the woods that allows it to land properly. I fancy giving it a go with a lean shell at some point to see how that effects things. Thanks again 👍🏻
@@DustyFingersRC I did try a one piece Lexan body a few years back, and to be totally honest I wasn't that impressed! It took a lot of the structural integrity away from the vehicle.... it handled like a flip flop! But, saying that I didn't have any of the chassis brace upgrades fitted to that one. Yours may perform better with a light Lexan shell, due to the chassis stiffening upgrades perhaps? I also wasnt entirely happy with the detail of the moulded one piece shell, it took away a lot of the character that we all love the lunchbox for. I now generally have two body shells for most of my runners, a tatty one to bash with, and then a well finished mint one for on the shelf. I totally agree with your statement regarding being concerned about damaging the shell that you have put so much time into..... especially true of the lunchbox, as it doesn't matter how carefully you drive it, it WILL end up on its roof! 😂 👍 👍 👍
Great information and much appreciated. Totally relate to the looks and how the lean shell takes away from the actual enjoyment if seeing it bomb about. I tend to stay with loose dirt or sand so if there is a roll over no chunks are taken out like driving it on road. Appreciate the chat 👍🏻

What if you put the tire stickers on and then spray some clear coat over them before mounting them to the rims? Might help the tire stickers last longer
Can't say I care for the Lunch Box, Black Edition, with the only hop ups being full bearings. Playing with it for hours, drag racing against my buddies Heavy Dump Truck, crawling, grass runs, and the like. That's not true, I can't back that up lol
In your CVAs, what oil viscosity are you running? I’ve got 85 mm Fastrax on all four corners, but they’re still pretty stiff (and a bit of stiction even after a complete rebuild). I’m on the cusp of switching over to CVAs if I can’t tune these Fastrax soon. Cheers!
You can buy the optional spring set for the Fastrax shocks in case you didn't know. I use them on my son's LB and I am really happy with those shocks. I put the CVA's on this as I had a spare set. I can't be 100% sure but I think I used my go to 400cst from Core-RC. You have piston options with the CVA's which is a bonus but from memory I can't remember what I used unless it is in the build video but I suspect it was 2 hole front and 3 hole rear.
@@DustyFingersRC Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately, being in the States I don't have easy access to the optional Fastrax springs. Ebay hasn't been fruitful and Fastrax doesn't ship across the pond. I may just go with the CVAs as I already have them on hand and parts are readily available for upkeep and adjustment. It's a shame as I like the aluminum build of the Fastrax.
I am always frustrated that I can't get many parts only available in the states so didn't expect to hear these are hard for you to get hold of. Good luck with finding the sweet spot 👍🏻
The Mad Van has its issues, in fact many people have the Mad Van just sat there broken. A friend of mine has been working on using other parts to fix the front wishbones. I get your point though as I had hoped it would be great and it has a cool vintage look but people buy the Lunchbox based on nostalgia and enjoy its driving characteristic.
It's not a right or wrong statement of course, but "arguably" it is. You pick a great truck with the Blackfoot. I like the King Blackfoot for the amazing gearbox.
Nice video! But you got one thing wrong. The Carson esc is definetly not a hobbywing esc. It does work well but it has a issue. It has 50/50 throttle way while most rtr transmitters have a 70/30 throttle way. Unless you have a computerized transmitter where you can adjust that you stuck with a esc that does not go as fast as it could. For me uts not a problem as most cheap computerised tx can do that. Basic rtr can not!
There is a relationship between Carson and Tamiya and Tamiya is using Hobbywing for its ESC's so I believe I am right but happy to be proven wrong. It's good to be able to adjust settings using the transmitter, I use the GT5 once I moved away from my old school tenancy of sticks. I used to think it wouldn't feel as good but the opposite was true. Thanks for commenting.
@DustyFingersRC carson is a german company and they are tamiya distributor for Germany. But as Germany is huge market alot of these carson/tamiya kits end up on the whole European market. In japan tamiya doesn't sell their kits with escs. That is a thing that regional distributors do. And that's the reason german tamiya kits end up with carson escs as tamiya don't produce their own esc anymore. Additionally you can take apart a carson 70amp esc and compare it to a hobbywing esc. It does share some similarity but it's completely different. You can trust me on this one, carson escs have nothing to do with hobbywing
@AsurasWrath164 Thanks, I did do a bit of research and thought Carson was using HW to produce the ESC's. Perhaps that is wrong. I understood that link with Tamiya as an official distributor but good to get a bit more information surrounding it 👍🏻

Always been tempted by these but never actually looked into them. Would ever have thought of taking one to a skate park! 😂 Could be our next purchase maybe....but then the Gorgon is also very tempting......
Yeah, I haven't taken mine to a skate park but it looks fun. The LB is just a great classic and a load of fun together with all the possiblities cosmetically. I have seen the Gorgon and it looks pretty cool and Andy Robinson has a video on it. I am more nostalgic about the LB but that is my age and growing up wanting Tamiya's when all I actually got was a Turbo Hopper by Nikko.
I have a couple of LBs being delivered next week, got a standard for my boy and a black edition for me. I reckon they'll be a bit more fun than our twinmotor MTs 😁

@DustyFingersRC first time I used an original rc10 front shock and still works great but best results for me was the tamiya mini cva's with the extra shock end kit. That extra weight center and in front of the Axle along with damping options works wonders.
Would be interesting to know and if you found any benefit using a certain oil thickness and or soft/firm spring etc. Easy to reach on FB if you are on there or drop a comment back here. Cheers 👍🏻
@DustyFingersRC tamiya soft oil and silver spring I found was all around good. I've over killed it and found a quality shock that DOESN'T LEAK! is best. It is so tight in there that it's better to set and forget. Keeping it tamiya, simple, and inexpensive was the best for me in that application. I like black because it's invisible, but I have to admit I have blinged it the first few times for show. "Look at what I did "factor" but black cva's for bashing.

Weather has been nice just recently. Bit cold but OK. I am just so busy doing my best to earn some money self employed during the school hours before I pick up my son. Time is limited but got something you will like coming up. A.favourite buggy for both us 👍🏻 Been part done for a long time now ( like most of the builds I have done lol)
