I don’t know how I have missed this one for so long. It is kinda ironic though because I just finished an Academy M1A2SEP in this scheme. I have been using the Vallejo MERDC paints for a while as I am currently on an AFV M60 kick. You repeated exactly my findings and steps for using the Vallejo paints. They work very well. I like the Winter variant MERDC scheme and I wanted to do an M1 as a “throwback” paint scheme. I also turned around and then painted an M60A3TTS in the current NATO camo scheme. You always do great work and instructing in your videos. Keep it up.

That paint scheme would look awesome on an M60. The South Koreans still use that paint scheme. Very cool nice work.

Sure someone already pointed this out, but the M1A2 came out well after we stopped using the MERDC camo scheme.... Of course, it's REALLY cool to see what the A2 would look like in that camo!

I know this is pretty old, but, I'm thinking about building a M270 (MLRS). I was a crewman years ago, I was really impressed by the work you did on the track. The MLRS track it actually from the Bradley, so it has 1 pad per link (not 2 like the Abrams). But, it looked pretty realistic for a soggy field exercise. Washing a launcher really sucked.

If this would be a M1 Abrams with a 105mm gun from the early 80's, the colours would match with the vehicle. Beside that it is very well done!
@alantoon5708
@alantoon5708 3 года назад
The 120mm armed Abrams were, as far as I know, in the NATO three color scheme. The earlier 105mm armed M-1's were delivered in overall Forest Green, with the rest of the painting to be done at the unit level according to local conditions. Needless to say I saw much variation from the official paint patterns and colors. On one vehicle that I saw it appeared that a mop was used.... I built several armor kits in the late seventies and eighties in the MERDC scheme. Polly-S had a matched paint set out along with a painting guide. However I mixed my own using Floquil RR colors as were published in the classic AFV-G2 magazine. The MERDC scheme was discontinued by the Army when the NATO 3 color scheme was adopted in the mid/late 1980's.
@petervi1962
@petervi1962 3 года назад
@@alantoon5708 you are right, but this scheme is for shure not correct with the A2 version. This should be either overall green, NATO 3 color scheme or desert yellow :-)

I really love your videos and they are inspiring me to start model building again. But I have one critique. I know it's your model, but you always, always use the desert wash and the dust. And on this model I was hoping you would use more of a winter wash and maybe even snow getting in the tracks and winter weathering. Since the paints you used was wintere paints. Could you please do a winter weathering model? Because I'm thinking about building tanks but I want to give them winter weathering especially on vehicles that would have appeared on the Russian front. I think it would be a nice change of pace as well. You do a great job. Also can you show how you do battle damage? I watched one guy use a knife and drimmel tool to dig out battle damage. But I would love to hear how you do it. You give great and easy to follow instructions.

@Tentacl

I never did, but from the images we get in the internet I'd guess there's large chunks of mud and earth thrown by the tracks, but snow deposited over the angles all over the tank, right?

Nice work Andy. I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my own M1. (A re-boxing of Trumpeters old kit) The camo scheme you've done looks brilliant and nice to see other than the typical desert sand that's usually done.Will look at doing something similar for my next M1 build. I find when using the Model Air I will also add a small amount of Vallejo thinner, as well as one to two drops of thier Flow Improver product, it tends to help a lot in keeping the paint from curing inside your airbrush. Nicely done. Though I wonder if the black and sand colored highlights wouldn't look better if they were applied before painting the brown color fields, to achieve a "pointier" look. It would be interesting in what sequence the color fields on real vehicles were painted....

Hi Andy. Wonderful video! I am new to scale modelling and wanted to try out the Vallejo Model Air paints. I just wanted your opinion on the following: 1. Can I use distilled water as a thinner for these paints? 2. Are these paints suitable for handbrushing ( I dont own an airbrush)? 3. How many 1/35 models can I complete with one 17ml bottle of paint? Thanks!

Great display as always, and the rest of the channel is a constant inspiration needless to say. Thank you for all that you do with the hobby and the channel. I've a question regarding the airbrush clean up after your M1 was finished. Granted, this was 4 years ago but wanted to check to see what folks use to get vallejo paints cleaned out of their airbrushes immediately after use. I clean my badgers immediately after use every time and have been using tamiya (like you) while considering switching to vallejo for flat clear coats and some of the colors as tamiya flat clear doesn't get the job done anymore for some reason. I've scoured the web for an answer and while no one specifically addresses the clean up thinner type for vallejo's matt acrylic varnish, some people have used lacquer thinner without gumming up the paint whereas others have completely ruined their airbrushes using lacquer. Any chance you can shed some light on this after using vallejo for the M1? My apologies for the lengthy post and thank you kindly in advance!

I'm just old enough to remember when they first started using the Abrams tanks back in the early 80's.....they initially were painted Olive Drab, but somewhere during the 80's they painted them with this scheme along with 95% of all the other vehicles in our armed forces.

@personman906
@personman906 7 лет назад
Congrats on another great build, Andy! I noticed around the 13:00 mark that the sand color produced a good bit of overspray. This is probably due to paint drying on the tip of your airbrush (I used to have the exact same problem with Vallejo Air paints). A drop of acrylic retarder medium and a little X-20A does the trick and makes it so the paint doesn't dry on the tip within a minute of airbrushing.
@beuford1982
@beuford1982 7 лет назад
Thanks for that tip Jasper! I keep having issues with grainy overspray when trying to do fine camouflage lines. I'll try what you said and see if it helps sort out the issue. I'm hoping that its not an issue with my airbrush. I've got a Badger Patriot 105 that I bought last year and have been happy with it. I've kept it clean and made sure to protect the needle.
