Building Alan Jones' Williams FW07 car which took him to the 1980 Formula 1 World Championship and Williams to the Constructors' Championship. This is built using the old Tamiya kit from 1980, with new decals. I'm really pleased with the result of this build!

I built it back in the day when I was 15 a fantastic kit for the time

Yeah, very nice indeed considering it's older than I am!

I'm an Aussie, and was following F1 closely that year. Of course, I would have to paint the car in the Championship-winning year! Great build, young man.

Really enjoy the way you explain what you’re doing and how you would do it differently next time. Some great tips for when I get to it in my stash. Keep them coming!

Fantastic build this, well done! I'd love to visit the Williams HQ as I was a big Damon Hill fan as a kid. Very glad I could help with the decals and I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished diorama.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Год назад
Thank you! The only thing holding up the diorama now is my awful figure painting skills - I want to do justice to your decals :)

@@ModelNerdhaha! I'm sure you will. It's faces which worry me the most. Much easier when doing a modern pit crew as they all wear helmets!

Thanks for sharing a part of racing history with us, MN. You obviously know it well and are a fan of F1 sport and all things associated with it. Stellar job on the Williams FW07....the decals make a massive difference....very impressive!

Awesome video. Love the audio overlay at the end. Gotta love you some Murray. Side pods look better without the green stripe, and wasn't on the other livery anyways.

I always soak those prechromed parts in ammonia and then scrub it all always. I never had good luck painting over it. Great looking build though, nice work.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Год назад
Yes, I think if the parts were larger I would definitely do that, but I can just about get away with it on the small ones

I remember watching this car race as my father was very keen on F1. It is kind of scary how long ago it was now. I remember the skirts and the subsequent ban on them affected Williams quite badly. Also my dad and Carlos Ruetemann are no longer with us.
@ModelNerd

Yes, it really it crazy how long ago it was. In fact those years are closer to the end of WWII than they are to us now!

Always makes me giggle that any car with British Leyland won the world championship, hell Alan Jones dominated it. Lovely car and build i have one in my shelf but broke the small role bar. Have you ever done the driver models to go with the car a friend did that when we were younger but never seen them since, the whole pit crew will be cool, Great touch with Murrays comms
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Год назад
Thanks mate - glad you liked it. I've got a few of the driver figures but never included them. I think I'm going to in my upcoming Tyrrell P34s though (1976 and 1977 versions). Those kits also include decals for the drivers' race suits, which is nice.

I don't seem to see the modern F1 cars in model kit like they were in the 90s when Tamiya released many F1 kits.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Год назад
Unfortunately not. Licensing issues, I believe. I recently bought the Aoshima MP4/2 only to find half the decals were missing due to licensing issues (not just the obvious tobacco ones, but Shell and Goodyear too). Rather annoying.

Fantastic build. Do you have any advice for a new modeler trying to overcome the intimidation of race car kits but with a passion for the subject matter?
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Год назад
Thanks. I feel like I've still got a lot to learn in this area but I think the main things are to identify the subcomponents (based on common paint colours) and really take the extra time to ensure everything is filled, sanded, primed (and repeat) until it is perfect. The paint jobs on these cars show up any imperfections. The biggest step I made recently was being very disciplined with the very fine sanding of the primer coat to ensure the spray paint went on smoothly and gave a good finish. If you do it well enough you don't even need a gloss coat below your decals. On the Tyrrell P34s I'm building now it took 4 or 5 rounds of priming, sanding smooth, priming, sanding smooth until I was happy.
