Old fishing village in eastern Gulf of Finland. Tammio was under rule of Vyborg Castle in the 14th century and its inhabitants were Swedes. In the mid-16th century, Tammio was home to a couple of families, until the island was deserted in the 1570s when the Russians destroyed the coast. The next time the island was permanently inhabited was in the 1630s, when the Finnish-speaking population moved there. Until the early 19th century, the people of Tammio lived on rent on the island and paid the crown for the use of fishing waters by piloting or chartering crown goods. In 1882, Tammio had 47 houses. The primary school was completed in 1891. Fishing was still practiced until the 1950s, but since then the island has remained mainly a holiday destination for the families of the Tammio.
