The frame of them both reaching for their waists at the same time makes it obviously self defense to me. The group with the red hoodie were also clearly the aggressors in the situation.

Its awful that this happened in an area with so many innocent bystanders . With that being said. This situation is why you NEVER talk to the police without a lawyer. This is something I have ingrained in my kids since they were kids. Luckily for him that exact moment is caught on video. He clearly wasn't the aggressor as he is backing away. Even while defending himself he only shot 3x it's not like he emptied his clip which I have seen videos of police shooting unarmed people whom they may have assumed we're armed 10 - 20x while they were "defending themselves". Hopefully he is able to get a good lawyer that will really fight this case for what is right. You would think regardless of what he said, the police would go off of the video where they are seeing it with their own eye that he is legally defending himself(pertaining to Florida Law). I guess because he incriminated himself by telling them what he thought he remembered happened their going to charge him with it. He obviously is not the shooter of the of the other people as 3 bullets cant possibly shoot 15 people.

It seems as they were comfortable enough the cops wouldn’t bother them over age. Not only was he out there but he was there with a stolen pistol.

This is the best breakdown of the situation I've seen on this shooting. With the breakdown on where both parties are from, their online profiles and overall reporting of what happened. As someone from Tampa and who lives not far at all from Ybor this is so senseless. All of this happened because someone waved/said hi to a girl? How can you be so insecure about that? Plus why in the world is a 14 year old gitt out past 11 especially in Ybor where most places are 21+? Of course it starts at home but apparently this dad wasn't fit to be a father figure in the first place. He's been arrested numerous times (look up Emmitt Wilson). This is the 2nd kid the father has lost due to gun violence. I feel bad but at the same time you need to be active in your kids life and get them out of situations like this. Or simply realize you're not capable of raising kids. They need to catch all of the shooters or shooter for the sake of the victims. Phillips did what he needed to do in that situation whether you like it or not. Overall this could have completely been avoided in different ways. Don't let your 14 year old past 10 pm. But regardless of age nothing good happens past midnight. Ignoring the dude that waved to someone you're with. Those 2 things alone and this would have never happened. Such a shame.

There is no reason for a 14 year old kid to be in Ybor City with a firearm on his waist when bars are letting out for the night. And then the dad appearing in the media after the fact…. Like excuse me sir, why wasn’t your child at home where his azz should have been? I also agree with you that the city is definitely going to want a conviction for this. It sucks that people don't do what we did Growing up, you know, fought with your hands. The only time they grabbed a weapon was if a weapon was used on one of their friends or family, and it was an eye for an eye situation. I just remember in school we had so many fistfights that ended with people shaking hands or being butthurt for a little bit longer, but the beef was settled. It just gets worse and worse as the years go by I swear.
