New to your channel and enjoyed your videos. I have the Tamron on order and was glad to see your testing with this lens on the A1. I am a wildlife photographer an use the FE 100-400GM and 200-600G on my A1 and A7RIV for birds in flight with great results. Thanks again for your testing of this lens.

Great review, much appreciated. Some points you have not mentioned, though, which are rather important: - Is it possible to micro-adjust this lens on Sony cameras? - Does this lens play nicely with the Sony in-camera lens aberration compensations? - Is it possible to update the firmware of this lens while mounted on a Sony camera, or is an additional external USB dock necessary?
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 3 года назад
Thanks. This only one man's opinion and review😀 As far as I know, micro adjustment is only needed for DSLR cameras. I don't know, if this is compatible with Sony in camera corrections and it's not important for me, because I only shoot RAW. I don't know about the firmware either, but Tamron website might know.

Love you doing some coverage of other brands, gear and gadgets. Keeps the mind fresh and open, though I loved your photo walks and stories before more than those "gear explain" videos (no matter if MFT, Lumix, Sony or any other potential brand). So maybe blending the vlogging style of walking around and trying it out, explaining composition, techniques, etc. can be combined with those new formats to create an even better balance ;) Also, now that you´re not an ambassador anymore, maybe it´s time to change the intro? Not to sound rude, but "I´m a photographer" sounds so empty compared to before - I´d love to hear you reinvent yourself as you do with those new formats ;)
@mattisulanto

Thanks. I have to do something with the intro, I completely agree😀 This one was also going to be a photo walk, but some events changed my plan at the last minute.

Back in the day, Tamron was considered a cheaper option. Good for occasional use, but not as your main lens. But now computers are designing lenses it seems to have changed.

Yes, it was the same with Sigma, but today many third party manufacturers do really good job and the lenses can be considered as your main lenses.

Thanks as always for the fair minded, informative video but my goodness you're in better shape than I. If I calculated correctly, the a1 plus battery together with the Tamron 150-500 weighs over 4.3kg; plus would be even heavier with the Sony lens! From an old rock song when I was young: Well mister you're a better man than I 🙂.

Fun review, I really enjoy your take Matti. I'm an MFT shooter for a reason(s). Size, weight, cost. As I mentioned previously, I saw a fellow in a canoe shooting pictures of an osprey with a Sony a1 and a 600mm Sony lens. Approximate cost = $20,000. Is the a1 primarily for pro photographers who can get some ROI, or are hobbyist with deep pockets also a target audience?

Does Tamron have any plans to make a teleconverter for e mount? you are right. not having a teleconverter option is a dealbreaker for many. Sony does not specify TC specifications in its license to make e mount lenses. so they will have to reverse engineer them.

@dfusselman
@dfusselman 3 года назад
What I've heard from multiple RU-vidrs Sony does not allow Sigma or Tamron to make telecommuters for their EF-mount lenses - so I would generally not count on being able to use teleconverters on these third party zoom lenses for Sony. That said, most experienced RU-vidrs say that teleconverters don't help you on zoom lenses unless the lenses are extremely sharp. I don't own any teleconverter so I don't have direct experience with that but I don't have any reason to not believe them. The Sony 200 600 is extremely sharp but Tony Northrup showed that 1.4x and 2x teleconverters give you a worse image at 840mn and 1200mm compared to cropping the 600 mm image to the same focal lengths. Given the other effects of teleconverters: less light, higher ISOs, reduced focusing speed, etc there's really no reason to ever use one on the Sony 2 - 6 and most likely the same for the Tamron. Again, that's what I've heard so YMMV.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 3 года назад
@@dfusselman This is a native Sony E mount lens, so I'm not sure what the EF mount has to with this. I have no reason to doubt Tony N, but many still want a TC. I personally have quite good experience with TCs despite of their downsides, but the "host" lens has to be first class.

Crop bodies aren't necessary anymore with the new FF 's coming out. You can instantly go crop mode with the A7RIV and A1 at the touch of a button...crop is being built in now. You get the low light and the high MP's of FF plus crop mode whenever needed...all in one body

I wonder about the strategy of lens makers like Tamron producing lenses only for the Sony mount.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 3 года назад
As far as I understand, Sony mount is open source, which makes it easy to design a lens for it, because all the necessary data is available. There are plenty of Sony cameras around too. For example, Canon shares no data about their RF mount, which makes it much more difficult for lens designers. The other mirrorless FF mounts have such a small market share, that it might make no sense to produce a lens for those.

Hi Matti, back when you quit as a Lumix ambassador I was okay with the fact that you will do other stuff than mft too. But now you do *only* other stuff. I am really sad to see going away a great channel for my beloved system. Now this is only another gear heavy channel.

I have MFT content coming soon, but I can only make about two videos per week, so sometimes it may feel like a long time to wait for some specific content. Sometimes also opportunities to cover some piece of gear come as a surprise and I have to change my plan.
