IN THIS VIDEO:
Many people watch comparisons between the Tamron 150-600mm G2 vs Sigma 150-600mm Sport zoom lenses, but in this video, I decided to compare the Tamron 150-600mm G2 with the Canon 600mm f/4 prime lens in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. I consider five key aspects in my comparison, namely:
1) Size & weight;
2) Durability;
3) Price;
4) Image quality; and
5) Focal-length.
At the end I pick a clear winner!
The Tamron 150-600mm G2 zoom lens only just outperforms the Canon 600mm f/4 prime lens and wins the competition 3-2. At the end of the day, it's the versatility of the lens that makes it ideal for the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
It's important to mention that I don't particularly like the Tamron 150-600mm entry level zoom lens or it's Sigma counterpart, the Sigma 150-600mm contemporary zoom lens, because both of them are not sharp enough in my opinion.

I've got the tamron 150-600 G2, and i use it in f8 with high isos thanks to the new R5, and i don't have much problem with the light, also topaz denoise is very helpful to get rid of the noise (if you want) and improve sharpness. Totally recomended. Paying 14000 dollars for a lens like that is just absurd

Shooting at f/8 is a great idea with that lens, Fernando, and it helps so much if you have a body like the R5 so that you can shoot at high ISO's.

Enjoyed the video! I have the Tamron 150-600G2 on a Nikon D500. I like the lens (but haven't had anything to compare it to). To you "versatility" argument (in the comparison to the huge prime lens), I would add that I can walk around all day with my set up and shoot, hand-held, birds-in-flight, find and capture small fast moving birds (e.g. warblers), and get to places I wouldn't be able to with a huge lens that cannot be used hand-held. I do have to say (and it was mentioned elsewhere) that in my experience, the lens is soft at 600mm, I prefer to use it at 450-550 and crop in post if needed.
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert 3 года назад
I agree with you 100%! The Tamron G2 is easy to carry around, but it is a bit soft at 600mm. I probably should have mentioned that shooting at f/8 also helps a bit to increase sharpness.

I have the same lens and use it on my Nikon D850, D800 & D780 - I was not a fan of the D500. I also use my 500 F4 (rarely) and my OLD 300 F2.8 that is the sharpest lens I have every used. The Tamron G2 is on par with the 500 F4.

Nice comparison, but it’s like comparing apples and oranges. You should have compared against the Canon 200-400 ext 1.4. Then do the math with owning the Canon 200-400 vs renting it 5 to 6 weeks in a year. Yes, it’s a crazy down payment for a lens, but remember that the lens might go down 30% in value as a 2nd hand against the rental cost for 6 weeks.....and all of a sudden the math of buying one starts making sense. For how many weeks do you need to rent a lens until it starts costing you vs buying a lens and take the 2nd hand depreciation?

I went with the 100-500mm Canon, cost more than either the Tamron or Sigma but the keeper rate is a hell of a lot more, being used on a R5 or R6. The focus hunting and pulsing shows up more on the mirrorless bodies.

A very good comparison. I was pleasantly surprised that you opted for the Tamron. For me, it was a practical choice. (Since I have Nikon cameras, the Canon wouldn't have done me any good anyway, but Nikon has its own 600 mm lens, but it is $12,000 and the 500 is still twice as expensive as the Tamron! I've owned the Tamron now for a few years, and it's been great not just for wildlife but other circumstances when you need to get close but can't be close. I am always amazed by its sharpness. Maybe the Canon will last longer but you can buy several Tamrons for the price and any difference in the quality of the photos probably would not even be notice by me since the results from the Tamron have been so good in actual shooting.

The EF600 in the pop ups during the in studio video (3 minutes 29 seconds) is the Mk1 EF 600 lens. The lens being used in the videos on safari is actually a Mk2 EF600 lens. To confirm, look at the focus rings on the pop up. There are differences between the lenses. The weight mentioned for the mk 1 is correct, but the mark 2 being used in the video is about 4.2kg with the hood. I'm suprised that no one realised this.

Great video. My answer however would be the 200-400 with built in 1.4X Converter from Canon. I bought mine used and spent about $5500. Not cheap, but not $12,000 either. It has a nice blend of the advantages of both of these lenses. I use it with FF cameras for sports. For wildlife in good light, I go with a crop camera 7DII, making the 400 reach pretty far, and the 560mm you get with the converter reach really far.

Almost only work with primes nowadays, I was never really happy with the quality zoom lenses offer me. And for the lack of versatility I always have at least two bodies with two different focal lengths attached with me. Usually the 600 F4 on one and the 100-400 F5.6 or 400 F2.8 on the other one. But will always try to make at least 75% of my pics with the 600 F4 because the picture quality is sooo good.

And with this reaction you confirmed what the reviewer said.... you adjusted your SS, your Aperture, your ISO..... and the action is going on.....and now you have to switch cameras.... lay down carefully your expensive prime and take up your other camera..... meanwhile losing 50 tot 100 frames...... besides ofcourse all the money you spend..... this review was a good realistic fair review!

@@actie-reactie Ever heard of customer buttons? Both of my cams are programmed the same way and I can switch pre programed settings the same way. This goes super super fast, and of course you always loose a few frames, but who cares? It's NOT possible without loosing a few. And I prefer to have only 3-5 good shots over having all 35 shots but all are just lacking in quality. My cameras are also always ON when I am on tour, so I can pick them up and shoot. Always have at least 8-10 batteries with me ....also I do not lay down my 600 F4 like it's made of paper, they are build like tanks and can handle a lot. Only thing I make sure is, nothing is scratching the front element. But hey, no problem at all, you can shoot with whatever you want and how you want, I could not care less about your way of photography - there's many ways of doin' it.

(late) thanks for video! I have the G2 on my Canon R7 which in general is a great thing because APS-C with 33Mpx gives a great level of detail. However it's recommended to adjust the G2 with the tap-in console from tamron as it may give you more sharpness. My impression is that some samples of the g2 unfortunately maybe not as good focused as others. And some mightbe completely off so that they cannot be fixed. I tried an rf 100-500 on my r7 (3 times the price) and that was tack sharp. The r7 seems to have autofocus issues in low light WHEN shooting above 15 pics per second, see videos from Duade Paton. A prime lens with a big aperture will hit that problem later.

Another option is buying a used EF 500 f4 MK2, far easier to use than the 600 f4, closer focusing distance and considerably smaller.

I could not agree more! The zoom, lightweight, and low cost make it a no-brainer unless you are a pro making money from your photography. I shot birds and use a G2 150-600 and a 500 PF, I use the Tamron so much more than the prime 500 PF. Just sharing my experience with two bodies and the G2; The Tamron was kind of a slow dog on the D850, and I was ready to get rid of it. Then 7 months ago my Z9 arrived, and I discovered that the G2 focuses faster than the Nikon 200-500, the old Nikon 200 400 f4, and about the same as the 500 PF! That made the G2 my go-to lens due to its versatility, weight, and size. Yes, shooting in low light the primes are FAR better, there is no contest there. For the slightly inferior image quality and the noise of early morning, there is Topaz to help the G2.

So you can get some macro photos on a 500mm lens. So great for anything you see around you. I cant imagine carrying a 200-600 or a 600 prime. WAAAAYYYY too heavy

Great comparison. I was in the same boat a few years ago. I purchased the Tamron G2 for my 2017 Tanzania Safari and was blown away by the quality too. With good light and exposure, it took fantastic images. Low light was definitely an issue. I debated renting the EF 200-400L IS or the 600mm f/4L IS II, but travel weight/size was a big factor. I would have definitely missed a lot of shots with just 600mm too. A big point to consider too that you pointed out. Versatility is key since circumstances and opportunities change rapidly. I have another trip planned for 2022 and really enjoy the Sony FE 200-600mm. Will probably rent the Sony A1 body for that trip and use my A7R IV for wide-angle/telephoto. I also have the Canon R5 and RF 100-500L IS, but so far not as impressed I am with the Sony, though the Eye AF on the R5 is better.

If weight is an issue then the Sigma 600-600mm really makes sense cause its two or three lenses in one. But where the 60-600mm Sigma lens really shines is that it's one the very few camera lenses that is "Parfocal" meaning it retains perfect focus at all zooms levels. A necessity for shooting high-end video. The Sigma 150-600mm sport is NOT PARFOCAL so if you shoot video this is not the sense for you. All Cine Lenses are par focal but Cinema lenses are quite expensive for this reason. Understand that more than 90% of the photography lenses by Canon, Nikon and yes Sony are not parfocal because the cost to make it that way. Some lens come close to being parfocal but be careful because if you are not paying attention you can get burnered by that almost perfect focus. For critical work keep it parfocal. Also even if you are not much of a videographer having the focus still perfect even though you have zoomed in and out is a boon for nature photographers.

I have both a Tamron 150-600 G2 and a 500 F4 prime. I love how easy it is to go around with the Tamron, but one thing where the f4 is so much better, is in the dark hours of the morning and evening. I have gotten many photos I simply would not have got, if I did not have the prime lens. When you are out late or early, a moose is coming and the sun has not even risen yet or it just went down and you are at ISO 10000 (I have a D5), Because I had the 500 prime, I got the photos and YES they were usable! If I only had the Tamron, I would not, I would struggle with the light (F5-F6.5). So it really ALSO depends on what time of the day you will be photographing wildlife, and a lot of wildlife here in the North are more active doing the early and late hours than in the day hours.

I have a 500/f4 Version I and a Sigma 150-600. While the Sigma is great for the price, I have not used it since I got the 500/f4 (used of course). I would rather crop the photos from the 500/f4 over the Sigma between 500-600mm. While the prime lens is certainly heavier and more inconvenient, when you nail a shot with it, the image quality makes it worth the extra effort.
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert 3 года назад
I agree, Steve - that quality is unbeatable. Where it becomes tricky with the prime, is when the animals come too close. I had a 500mm f/4 for years, but eventually got rid of it because of the weight and the fact that I always felt a bit too close. That was in the Sabi Sands, it has to be said.

This is a very insightful review that I can now use to when other people ask me this common question. If I had to shoot with one camera/lens setup, I would also go for the Tamron 150-600 G2. I have suggested this great value and versatile lens to many wildlife photographers. While I personally shoot with 3 setups (600+1.4x for birds and far off animals, 100-400 for most action sequences and general wildlife and habitat shots, 24-105 for nearby large wildlife and landscape images) because I value IQ so highly, it is a big amount of effort and occasional frustration. Also, this method means my wife needs to drive and I sit with 3 cameras on the back seat. When walking around, in normal conditions, or for general birding and ID assisting shots, the Tamron is something I wish I had. Photography is all about informed decisions about compromises, and these decisions will be different for different people. But, if you are shooting with one lens, no doubt, the Tamron 150-600 G2 is the ultimate compromise for all the reasons Villiers has given.

I’ve also been there, John, with a 500mm f/4, 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 24-70mm f/2.8 on my lap 😝 We would all love to have prime or f/2.8 everythings, but the reality is, you can only ever shoot with one lens at a specific moment and, for me, versatility always wins. These days I actually use a Canon 5DmkIV with a Canon 100-400mm II on most of my game drives and I feel satisfied 90% of the time.

I own the g2 and the 400 5.6. (my machines are 80d and 5dsr). When shooting in BIF, 50% of the photos are blurred. the times never go below 1/2500, and ONLY if I find myself freehand I always use vc mod 2 (for stationary subjects instead vc 1 or 3). I realized that the biggest problem with this lens is the continuous refresh during the tracking of the subject (the autofocus briefly loses the subject and then hangs it up). This continuous refresh during the chase then inevitably causes problems when you press the shutter button, leaving you with a lot of choppy shots. With the 400 5.6 this HAPPENS MUCH MUCH LESS, because the af is simply better and more reliable. the 400 5.6 can be considered much more "sniper" from this point of view. the g2 hook the subject very quickly, but the real problem is that it is very hard to stay "hooked" during the chase. g2 is good for static animals but not for bif.

A comparison between the Tamron 150-600 and the Sigma 60-600 would be great, Villiers. Personally, I prefer the Sigma, because it allows you to shoot wide-angle and close-ups, while you do have to sacrifice a little bit of image quality in the wider shots (easily fixed in post though).

I have been a long-time (1972) Canon addict. My lenses and bodies have come and gone. The only one I have had for longer than 5 years is the 600mm F4. I picked it up cheap from a 80 year old photographer that bought it new in 1999. He wanted to "pass it down" to someone who would take care of it. I have also tried the 150-600 Tamron and Sigma lenses. I currently have a 60-600mm Sigma. I live in the US and my "big game" are birds of prey. If I can drive to a location, I take multiple lenses with me. I tend to use the 90D + Canon 600mm for the "best reach" and the 5D Mk4 + 600mm for close up shots. If I have to get on a plane, the Sigma 60-600mm or Canon 100-400mm II goes with me. Overall, I understand the need for portability while in tight and unusual spaces. I tend to opt for better focus and speed as my subjects are small and moving fast. Thanks for your post.

I think you missed some important factors in your discussion. You don't talk about AF accuracy and speed. To me with IQ this is super important especially fast moving scenes. A lion lying on the side of the road is not really a good basis for a comparison. For versatility you don't consider aspects like TC giving you significant reach advantages which will absolutely favor the 600mm F4. So again I think your comparisons are too limited. The modern 600mm lenses are now being used handheld which is something birders really enjoy. I think the bottom line here is if you can't afford or justify the expense of a big prime there are good zoom options available that are much cheaper and do a very good job. But if you want the best and you can afford it the primes are the way to go.

Love my Tamron, which replaced my Nikon 80-400 as my main lens. But it fails me on dark days or in low light. Prime lenses always do better in that comparison. But since I can’t afford prime lenses, the Tamron is a champ when conditions permit. Love your videos!

My primary concern is image sharpness, so the prime would win hands down. Most photographers have a back up camera, so you should not panic about wider shots, you said you have a 100-400, there you are. I use different lenses for different genres, street, sometimes wildlife, 50-500 Sigma for instance. I have a Sigma 120-300 f2.8, that is as sharp as my Canon 400 f2.8 mk1 and doesn't lose a lot with a Canon 2x. I bought it second hand for £1,500 after Sigma told me it was in a league of its own, for Sigma zoom lenses obviously.

I am a Nikon shooter - cant stand Sony as I think the color is flat and washed out - it does not have the depth that the Nikon has in the raw files and in my opinion, with the gimmicks, is still and camera aimed at folks who "THINK" they are photographers. This is an awesome video and I agree - the versatility of this G2 lens makes out weighs the negatives. I also have my 500 F4 that is on par with the G2 belive it or not but you have to stand SOOOO far back that I rarely use it. I also have and OLD 300 F2.8 that I DO use constantly and is all glass so it is heavy - it is simply amazing...... but I use the 150-600 G2 about 90% of the time. I am not a mirrorless fan for many reasons so looking at some older Canon DSLRs for fun. Wanted to research the G2 for Canon, your video came up and I am sold again. Thank you so much. 🙏 JonnyPink

I felt like leaving a comment as when you said "and like I said before you will not get this level of sharpness if you use the cheaper entry level Tamron and Sigma zoom lenses" I just have to disagree; I am a Wildlife Photographer just so you know what I use my lens for. I use the Sigma 150-600mm 'c' lens with a Canon 2000D/Rebel T7 and the image quality is absolutely outstanding with razor sharp images straight from the camera, before I bought the lens I asked around to see if buying the sport version was worth it and some said yes while some swayed to no, I got the contemporary lens and after a year of using it I am still blown away at the images I can get especially shooting at F8 which I use 90% of the time while occasionally using F7.1 or F6.3 for darker scenes; I also don't edit my images heavily or at all sometimes as I like the true look. (I don't have photoshop/lightroom at this current time) The main reason I chose the contemporary over the sport lens was the fact it is lighter at 1930g while the sports lens is 2860g, to anyone that will be a huge difference when you are out all day.

Sorry, I compleatly disagree (and yes, I used both lenses): Here is why: a) Normally you don't go out with the 600 by itself, but have a 2nd. body with a shorter lens. in my case that is the 100-400 II. Let's face it, if one can afford a 600 prime, the additional lens is hardly an issue. b) The Tamron 150-600 is weak above about 550mm, the 100-400 II is way sharper even a crop to get the same magnification. Even with the 1.4 TC the 100-400 is better at the long end as the Tamron. But, yes, the Tamron is not bad considering the price. But is one can afford it (and I think thats the main point) the 600 is beats the Tamron hands down in every aspect. The sharpnes is just way better and the aperature at 4.0 vs 6.3 at 600mm is a huge difference! Personally I changed my Tamron 150-600 to a Canon 100-400 II and never regretted it. As the Canon has a near focus distance of 1 meter (vs. about 4 meters if I remember correctly) all my to use that lens also as kind of a 'Macro' lens, suitable for lizzards, frogs, some larger flowers etc. IMO the comparison should be the Tamron 150-600 G2 vs. the Canon 100-400 II as these lenses are really in the same category. (or the new 100-500 RF lens!?). Can't wait to get back to the Kgalagadi, as we had to cancel our trip earlier this year due to Covid-19 ;-( danielzuppinger.com

Thanks for the great feedback, TrappingAlong. I agree - a Tamron 150-600mm G2 vs Canon 100-400mm II comparison would be great! Personally, I really enjoyed the extra reach of the 150-600mm in Kgalagadi specifically and would use the G2 over a 100-400mm II with a converter on. The minimum focus distance of the G2 is 2.2m, which is great considering the focal length. I think where this comparison is most valuable, is when you are unsure which one to rent, since the rental price difference is not that great.

I agree with your scoring. I have the Tamron that you compared and though much lighter than the Canon 600 (which I’ve never had but have seen and can imagine their weight) the Tamron still gets a bit heavy over time (if hand holding of course). I agree with your points on sharpness. I’m a sharpness freak and it always frustrates me when I get a soft result. I’m curious to see if you’re going to do a comparison to the new Canon RF 100-500. I’ve just acquired the Canon R5 (100-500 on back order) and will continue to use my Tamron until the 100-500 comes in. As I get older, reducing weight is getting to be more important and I don’t think the loss of 100 mm on the long end will matter. This also allows me to dispose of my 70-200 2.8L (which is heavy) as with the 100-500 there’s a lot of overlap and I don’t need the speed (I used to do weddings and 2.8 was required). I’m wondering what you think of that as well. Thanks for a great video.

IMHO major flaw in comparison is no focus speed. My experience is quick focussing has very often made the difference between a fantastic shot and no shot at all in the wild. In that department the 600 surely must have taken the honers. On newer frames such as R5/6 the difference would have been even more striking where the 600 would track but my guess is the Tamron not

Tiaan, you are right - that would have been a great addition to the comparison and I agree that the 600mm would have won it hands down. It would, however, have resulted in a tie 😛 What else do you think could have been compared to make it interesting again? 🤔

How would you recommend the 150-600mm to use it with a Canon M50?
@robscott2473
@robscott2473 3 года назад
Since my main interest is birds, I find with my current Canon EF 100-400 IS II that more than 90%, in fact close to a 100%, are taken at 400mm. At the same time, I crop almost all of my shots. I’m continually looking for more focal length. With all of that in mind, I don’t see the value of the zoom “flexibility” and the increased quality and robustness that comes with a prime is paramount. You didn’t test or comment on using an extender. The 600 mm f4 prime works very well with the Canon 1.4 teleconverter, giving you the flexibility of extending out to 840mm at f5.6, which is still faster than the Tamron lens. I don’t think the Tamron lens is going to do so well and sharpness is going to be a problem with the teleconverter. I realize the massive price tag is going to place the Canon 600mm out of reach of many people but I have to think about how much I spend on getting to the location. Frankly, over the years, lifetime travel costs are going to far exceed the lifetime cost of the big prime. Since neither lens is really a carry around lens because of weight, I’m going to put the 600 on my R5 and the 100-400 on my 7D MkII and have the best of both worlds. Renting the prime at $500 a day, in the US, does not make sense unless it is a once in a lifetime trip. A single one week trip is going to cost more than a quarter of the purchase cost of the lens.

Personally i love prime lenses because of the sharpness, contrast and bokeh. Zooms have good sharpness but the contrast and bokeh are not very appealing to me. You can close the gap if you are good in post processing images and don't mind spending time on that. In the end both have advantages and disadvantages. A lot of the disadvantages you can learn/manage to minimize and with both you can get great images depending on your skills as a photographer. Therefore, the price tag will ultimately decide what is best for you. Personally, i own a first generation 300mm f2.8 VR which combined with a crop sensor gives great reach and i can easily crop the images by 50% and still have enough reaolution. Furthermore i have all the advantage of a prime lens while I paid a bit more than a modern zoom lens and only a fraction of a longer prime lens.

Having said that, in the Kgalagadi the 100-400mm II on a full frame body is just a little bit short. And I'd prefer to keep shooting with the 5DmkIV as opposed to, say, a 7DmkII or a 90D, and hence the rental of the Tamron 150-600mm G2. The truth is, there are SO MANY options and combinations and they all have pros and cons. The important thing is to come back with as many memories as possible 😉

@@TheSafariExpert I agree totally....however.....When I am doing nature shoots, or zoo shoots, I use my 90D because of the extra reach of the cropfactor and 32 MP.... 7D as a back up.... my 5DIII I use for indoorshooting at events together with my tamrons 24-70 G2 and 70-200 G2...... and for long exposure shoots in nature I also use my 5DIII and my tamron 15-30 G2.... so I am equiped for every scenery..... but still looking for that extra reach.....thanks for the review... subscribed , en bedankt!

I very much disagree with your conclusion. The Tamron is a great lens for what it is and allows non pros and people on a budget an entry into wildlife and birding . And the price point also works for non professionals but it is not a 600 F4. First your comparison is unfair. You compare a super old lens with a new tamron. The old canon is still a better lens. I have the 600 II. It is lighter and better than the original. The 600 F4 has faster AF speed (at least my II version does) than the .If you watch Duade Patton, you will see the sigma has AF issues. The Tamron has similar Af issues with the R series, which is one reason you get less sharp images. The R series focuses these lenses better than DSLRs. The tamron does not have as good of IS. Again, less keepers if you are hand holding for birds in flight. The Canon has over a stop more light which means, faster shutter speed or lower noise and AF works better and just makes for better image quality and more keepers. I purchase a 100-400 II which too is a better, sharper lens with better faster AF and IS. I have the 400 2.8 ii which I use for lower light. Though I have never been to the Safari, I know people who have that 600 II and 400 II and they can shoot in early morning and late evening while the lesser lenses can't even AF because they have a 1.3 or 2.3 stop advantage. Sure if you want to shoot in mid day harshness, the Tamron works great but faster glass gives more opportunity. Then the final observation. You rated the Tamron better. Yet in your reply below, you state you use the 600 F4 and the Canon 100-400. If the Tamron was better you would be using it but you are not.. because the Canon is way better. Everyone wants an easier life and a lighter lens but those who work hard and deal with a better, faster lens reap the rewards for their efforts toting around a big honking lens. This is why I disagree with your conclusion. The Canon is better in every way. You pay more for it. Primes are better and come with a weight penalty that will always be the case. Like comparing a Toyota Tacoma with a Ford 1 ton diesel. Both can do light work with the tacoma being lighter and faster but the Ford will do a better job and things the Taco cannot and will last much longer and is a better choice to do heavy work. If you cannot afford a prime lens or you are not a pro needing to get a high number of keepers or shoot in low light conditions, the Tamron will work great for you as long as you realize the limitations.

I like my zoom lenses but when I am pushing the envelope the prime always wins. Would like to see a discussion about the number of elements in the zoom lenses and how good the coatings are with back lighting. This is why a prime tends to have better contrast.

Unsubscribed Your Conclusions are ridiculously concluded for the wrong reasons The 600mm f4 is a specialist Lens not to be Judged against a Zoom Lens And under conditions it was clearly not designed for, Any Serious Photographer who would suggest a third party zoom is better than a prime 600mm frankly is not to be took serious

I totally disagree with you. There are many people that go to the Kgalagadi who only have shorter lenses and who consider renting either a 600mm prime or a 150-600mm for some extra reach. In that case a 600mm is not always the best call, period. It’s all about what’s more important to that specific individual.
