Thanks to your questions, here are some more tests and reviews with the Tamron 17-70 versus the Sony 18-135 (SEL18135), with a special guest appearance by the glorious Sigma 16mm f1.4.
In this one, we'll be looking at the low-light performance of these Sony APSC lenses as well as how they render bokeh (or out of focus areas). We'll also check how well the Tamron 17-70 handles flaring.
Hopefully this isn't so terrible so as to confuse you even more :-)

Hey thanks for watching! Unfortunately I already sold off my 18-135, but here's what I can tell you regarding portraits: As I mentioned in this video, subject separation is not easy to achieve with the 18-135 unless your background is really far away and you're shooting closer to the long end. The Tamron on the other hand will allow you to separate your subject at any focal length given how sharp it is at f2.8 throughout the range. It's definitely the preferred portrait lens. Having said all that, if portraits are your main shots, I highly recommend the Sigma 56. It's by far the best choice for Sony apsc.

After the previous comparison I wasn't quite moved enough to add the 17-70, but this one reminded me that it doesn't take much to make my 18-135 struggle outside on an overcast day. Middle of the day and in the open it meets my needs just fine even on overcast days, but it gets rough when its critters in some cover for example. I'm sold on adding the Tamron. However, the dilemma now is that I'm having a bigger debate between the Sony 15/1.4 and Sigma 16/1.4, I still need to replace the Sigma 56/1.4 I foolishly sold, the a6700 is dropping in about a month and I still need to eat, preferably every day, so I have no idea where the 17-70 will land on my priorities list.

Hey thanks for watching. To be honest if the Sigma 18-50 2.8 existed then, I probably would have skipped both the Tamron and Sony. It's small, fast and optically excellent. As for the Sigma 16 vs Sony 15, I'd take the Sony because of the size. However another to maybe consider is the viltrox 13 1.4. it's really good and very affordable (compared to the Sony).

Thank you for bringing the Sigma lens to this review. Now, it's clear to me that both Tamron and Sony are more or less the same (not excellent) for low-light environments. So a massive difference between 2.8 and 1.4! It seems I'm going to buy the more universal (and cheaper) zoom Sony lens + something fixed with a 1.4 aperture for indoor

@andreas1701d
@andreas1701d 3 года назад
Hey thanks for watching! The Sigma 16 is noticeably sharper, especially in the corners. Also, you get f1.4 which is several stops brighter than the f3.5 you get with the 18-135 @ 18mm. It was my favourite all-time lens on Sony APSC. Unless the zoom reach or OSS is essential for your use-case, I'd choose the Sigma 10 times out of 10. I'd even choose the Sigma + ClearImage zoom if I needed to punch in a little, it's that good ;-)

if you rate the tamrons sharpness from 50mm to 70mm (1 being the softest and 10 for sharpest like sigma primes) how would you rate it? thanks
@andreas1701d
@andreas1701d 3 года назад
Hey thanks for watching! I haven't observed the "softness" many reviewers have mentioned at 70mm, but it is softer than 50mm. Only slightly though. I'd say it's a solid 8.5 (for reference, I consider the sigma 56 a 10 on Sony apsc, and the sigma 16 a 9). Here's the thing though: it's the only 2.8 zoom that goes to 70mm on apsc, so even if it's softer than the best prime, it's better to have that than nothing at all.

@@andreas1701d I agree it would be better in terms of aperture, VC and focal range for apsc. I got a6400 btw, thanks for the informative video and reply. im sold to tamron for my new lens :)

how ever 18-135 performs fairly well in outdoor, autofocus and OSS is really well , but yes in low light sigma beats, there is also 12mm f2 Samyang f2 , which is pretty well
@andreas1701d
@andreas1701d 2 года назад
Hey thanks for watching! Indeed the 18-135 is one of my favourites for hiking. Its small size + weight, sharpness and range make it an excellent all-arounder. Truly, the only things missing are a slightly brighter aperture at the long end and better weather sealing to make it the perfect lens for outdoors

which lens do you recommend to buy I am confused between the Tamron 17-70mm and Sony 18-135 I have sony a6000 with 16-50mm kit lens and 55-210 zoom lens. I am looking for a replacement of the kit lens for parties , weddings indoor and traveling outdoor sightseeing etc can you please suggest
@andreas1701d
@andreas1701d 8 месяцев назад
For your use cases, I'd recommend the Tamron between these two lenses. It'll be significantly better in low light, especially between 35-70mm. You could also consider the Sigma 18-50 2.8 which is smaller, lighter and excellent. I don't think you'd miss the extra 20mm of reach that much and it would complement your 55-210 better.

@@carllouisward9105 that's entirely subjective. It'll help getting somewhat lower shutter speeds (though I'm not sure how useful that'll be for what you're shooting), but you have to decide whether it's worth the extra size and weight as the Tamron is quite literally double the size & weight of the Sigma.

I was going to buy 17-70 after selling 18-135 , But after seeing your 2nd video, i just bought the on-camera flash. Problem solved. Now I'm looking to buy 24mm 1.4 and that's the only 3 things i need for family travel photography. Now I'm waiting for Sigma 23mm on sale or 2nd hand deal. I would realy appreciate if you do comparison between 23 -16-30 mm sigma line . Which 1 will be better for protraits + indoors. I dont like bokeh (Please dont shoot me ) , i feel its for those who never visit good places or dont know how to use background to make ur photos pop. Plus my wife hates it , she says i spent so much to show the place and all i see is useless blobs....... could have been done in our backyard, no 1 will know lol

@@lweleven3423 indeed none of them are *bad* lenses, just better at different things. The Sony has great range in a tiny package.
