The Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 vs. the Samyang 35-150mm f2-2.8

The Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 has been a key lens for me for the last year. It's one of the reasons I shoot more Sony now. The Samyang 35-150 f2-2.8 is a newer addition. It also comes in at less cost, which is nice.

I like the video, but I'm super confused by what you are trying to communicate in the middle of it... Are you saying you wished there was a similar (but smaller and lighter) lens made by sony that was constant f/2.8, and the reason you don't think that is an easy thing to do is that sony would have to license Tamron or Samyang build it? But you worry nobody would buy existing sony lenses anymore, so Tamron was forced to make this lens bigger? Hard to follow what you are trying to convey, what logic lead you to those conclusions, and what the relevancy is for the lenses compared in this video.
@ywmedia
@ywmedia Год назад
He's suggesting that he wishes that there was a smaller 35-150mm f/2.8 constant. It would be great if it could be a Tamron or Samyang, and thus more affordable. However, those manufacturers would have to get it approved by Sony. Sony would rather produce that lens themselves and sell it at a premium, rather than be undercut by the "budget" manufacturers. That's his own reasoning, whether it's true or not is debatable. But with Canon blocking third party lenses who knows. It's also worth noting though that Sony does own about a 15% stake in Tamron, and I'm sure has influence. If anything they could probably get Tamron to manufacture it, but badge it as a Sony (as long as it doesn't cost an uproar).

Thanks for this review. Enough info to assist decision making. Grateful for your straightforward approach. Personally I might defer buying this kind of lens because of the weight/size in terms of both but will reflect. However, there is one significant difference between these two very similar lenses and that is the price. Here in the UK the price difference is almost £1,000 ($1,255). So my feeling right now - it is the Samyang I'd choose.

Good informative video! One thing that wasn't mentioned, and it is something that is of great importance to me ... when shooting at 150mm, and shooting all the way in at MFD, which of these suffers more from focus breathing? I ask because I often use lenses in this range at MFD, and at "full zoom", so naturally the focus breathing issue is a very significant factor when making a purchasing decision.

Samyang 35-150 for L mount alliance lumix would be interesting as it’s supposed to be theoretically as good as native lumix lenses. And I think it has a more natural look and less clinical perhaps. Maybe a dual nature at 35mm and sharper as you go. I appreciate that split personality dreamy and sharp in the same lens. Is it just me or does anyone concur these findings. Love to hear your take on how the Sony version compares to lumix and perhaps tampon.

Thanks for these videos Taylor. As a Nikon Z user, I adore the z24-70 2.8s and z70-200 2.8s lenses…however, I’m intrigued by carrying one lens that covers much of that focal range (along with my trusty z 17-28 2.8). I know this 35-150 is still in development for the Z system, but curious if you think it will be in the same league as these Nikon z ‘holy trinity’ level lenses…based upon your experience with the Sony variant. Fun video. Been really enjoying some of the OCF videos. I already knew the techniques, but the examples have resurrected my awareness of the possibilities. Thanks! Been using my new Samyang indoors and out at weddings, mitzvahs and corporate events for a couple months and quite like it. Lens creep doesn't bother me. Was concerned about ghosting, what with spots and floods at venues, but haven't seen it. Expected more veiling flare than with my Samyang primes, and yup, it's there when there's very strong backlight (e.g. subject in front of a large window in a skyscraper). I just change position or switch to a prime. On some celebration shots, I can actually use the veiling flare for a slightly hazy, romantic/surreal look. Mostly, though, it's contrasty enough and quite sharp, even wide-open or close to it. Unexpectedly, it's made me appreciate my f1.4 primes' capability for subject isolation even more. I always have the 35-150 on my a7IV and swap my 24/1.8, 35/1.4, 85/1.4 and 135/1.8 primes on my a7RV.

Well speaking with experience from my degree in physics and handful of engineering design classes, I don't think Tamron or Samyang made the lenses larger than intended to appease Sony. The 35-150 range is equivalent to a 24-105 lens on an apsc body, they merely scaled up the geometry for full frame. It's not a radically new design, the lens has the architecture of a 24-105 lens. Stick one of these on a medium format camera and that's close to what you're going to get. As for the variable aperture, I bet they aimed for an f2.8 but realized a constant aperture was more difficult to do than having f2 on the wide end. Likely would have added weight and complexity to limit the wider aperture, or limit it in software like the 28-75 lenses, or just leave it as is, f2-2. 8.
@TaylorJacksonPhoto

Interesting. So it would be more challenging and more expensive to let less light in?
@ArsenijeRadenovic

I feel like my team lost the Taylor Jackson Super Bowl. 😂. I am/am not surprised. I have the Tamron and I love it. Your videos and your reasoning behind using the Tamron played a part in me purchasing the Tamron. The Samyang wasn’t out yet but I am extremely happy with the Tamron. I have used the Tamron for portraits and recently for travel on a cruise and I couldn’t be happier. I am still a hobbyist and not making big bucks so I appreciate Samyang providing a lower price option. I also appreciate Tamron producing a unconventional focal length zoom lens. I haven’t had any issues with my Tamron but if I ever needed to replace it, I would easily buy another Tamron. It’s been around long enough to see any/all issues where the Samyang is relatively new. After watching a ton of your videos, I see that although you are very successful, you are price conscious and I respect that. Whether that was your reasoning to choose the Samyang or not. The funny thing is that researching the Tamron 35-150mm is what brought me to your channel. Now I will have to move on and find another Tamron 35-150mm champion to follow so I can continue….😂😂. J/K Thanks for the great videos, awesome tips and honesty.

I bought my Samyang 35-150 in BH for a thousand dollars, already updated to version 2, and I have nothing to complain about, the auto focus for videos and photos are excellent on my Sony a7iv. The material is not bad, the problem with Tamron is that if you pay 2000 thousand dollars and sell it you will lose a lot of money.

that's what the 24-120 F4 (or 24-105 f4 depending on brand) is for, even though it doesn't quite have the same reach, 120 vs 150mm is not too big of a difference, and you get more wide-end. I don't need much on the wide end as my primary use is headshots, portraits, dog agility, horses, and stage performances where the fast aperture helps keep shutter speeds high enough. I wish the sigma 50-150 2.8 was remade into a FF lens, but the 35-150 will likely be my next lens.
