Tanah Lot is a striking rock formation off the coast of Bali, Indonesia, renowned for housing the ancient Hindu pilgrimage temple, Pura Tanah Lot. This temple is a significant cultural icon and a favorite spot for photography. The name "Tanah Lot" translates to "Land [in the] Sea" in Balinese, aptly describing its unique offshore setting in Tabanan, roughly 20 kilometers northwest of Denpasar. The temple's creation is attributed to the 16th-century Dang Hyang Nirartha, who, upon discovering the rock's beautiful setting, instructed local fishermen to build a shrine there to worship the Balinese sea gods. The main deity of the temple is Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara, the sea god, and Nirartha is also worshipped here.
Tanah Lot stands as one of seven sea temples along the Balinese coast, forming a spiritual chain along the south-western coast. It has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries, with its foundation deeply rooted in Hinduism. Legends say venomous sea snakes at the base of the rock protect the temple from evil spirits and intruders, with a giant snake created from Nirartha's sash guarding it as well.
In 1980, the temple underwent significant restoration funded by a Japanese government loan to prevent the rock face from crumbling. This restoration included the creation of artificial rock to stabilize the structure. Despite its sacred nature, Tanah Lot is a popular tourist destination, with entrance fees differing for locals and foreigners. Visitors can access the temple through a path lined with souvenir shops, and the site is complemented by restaurants on the mainland clifftops for tourists. Tanah Lot is located in Beraban, Kediri, Tabanan, making it a must-visit for those exploring Bali's rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
