Lavish 1980s romantic mini-series set in Singapore in the twilight years of the British Empire. John Dexter (Christopher Bowen) is a dashing young Englishman from Singapore's wealthiest merchant family. Julie Soong (Khym Lam) is a beautiful young girl from one of the island's most respected Chinese families. Banished to opposite sides of the world by their disapproving families, the young lovers try to build new lives apart, but the outbreak of World War Two causes them both to be drawn back to Singapore. Now, amidst the horrors of the Japanese invasion and the uneasy peace that follows, the young lovers must fight to keep their love alive.

i got to watch this series in the 80s when i was a young teenager & i was mesmerised with the old age setting. i thought it was real and the forbidden love story between johnny & julie was so captivating

I was in Singa 11yrs ago, later when I found this book in a used street market, the name sounded familiar. I liked very much, mostly about the historical situation, also the businnes side was very well descripted. The adaptation is more soap opera.

Thanks for sharing these movies. Its a wonderful series beautifully acted and spoken. What a time to be an Aussie living in Singapore. I lived there in the 70's, and it was still pretty colonial. It was a wonderful time.

Thank you so much for posting. I was living in South Korea in the days before RU-vid. I remember watching this program and enjoyed it so much. All these years later I couldn't remember the name of this mini-series and then came across your posting. What a joy it turned out to be the show I watched way back in 1995. Thank you! :)

Not only the series captured the Colonoliasm well, the original Novel by Noel Barber is highly recommended.It is a joy to read.

Was Julie (Khym Lin) in any other films? I've searched, and all I could find was some awful film called the Zombie Brigade and it's even worse than it sounds : ( Just can't believe that this talented and gorgeous actress isn't in several more films.
