Footage of the Tanfield Railway's 2019 Legends of Industry Gala (June 15), featuring a number of resident and visiting loco's tackling the line's fearsome gradients:
- Keighley Corporation No.2 (2859)
- 7409 Sir Cecil A Cochrane
- 2730 (Joicey Collieries No. 3), Twizell
- NCB No. 49
- 18 Lewin (from Beamish)
- Ex-GWR, 813 (Backworth Collieries No. 12)
Always a joy to visit this railway.

I visited this lovely little railway just before lockdown in March 2020. It's a delight and this is an excellent video of it.

I only visited the Tanfield for the first time last month and was very impressed! It is now, without doubt, my favourite heritage railway. (I live in Northamptonshire.) Thank you for this beautifully and imaginatively-shot video which shows me what it looks like in summer! By the way, I spent many hours in the sidings among the derelict stock taking photographs. The staff don't seem too "precious" about allowing folk to carefully and respectfully explore. Try this at some heritage sites!!

Thank you very much, Stuart, much appreciated. I visited for the first time in 2016 and likewise was very impressed with the line and the experience they provide. An absolutely fantastic place to visit for anyone interested in railways or industrial heritage. Many thanks, David.

Mining may be no more, steam may be a forgotten everyday sight but Tanfield keeps the images of working coal and steam alive. Great video, great sound and a overall great weekend I. think. Going to hit the rewind to hear loco’s working hard for their living. Thanks to you for recording it and to Tanfield for keeping the heritage alive. Amacf

I found this absolutely absorbing, David, with non-stop action throughout. I have seen GWR 813 at first hand although not bearing a name, nevertheless enjoyed seeing it here. This looked well planned with two (?identical) saddle tanks working together, other interesting pairings and how can 18 Lewin fail to be a favourite! Exciting on-board/post-footplate sequences. Kind regards, Bob.

Thanks very much Bob, much appreciated. I quite agree that it's a very well planned event. The saddle tanks are very similar but there are differences (the cab is larger on one) - I'm sure someone will know more and put us right!

The saddle tanks are the same basic design but number 2 is older and has a shorter tank as well as a cut down cab

A delightful video in everyway. Enough to make me want to drink tea out of an enamel mug with a blue rim. It must have a few chips in it. A chipped mug that is, not chips in the tea. They go soggy lol

Many thanks Steven, glad you like it. Yes, definitely best to keep the chips dry ;)
