Tangerine Dream -- Phaedra (1974)

Phaedra is one of the most important, artistic, and exciting works in the history of electronic music, a brilliant and compelling summation of Tangerine Dream's early avant-space direction balanced with the synthesizer/sequencer technology just beginning to gain a foothold in nonacademic circles. The result is best heard on the 15-minute title track, unparalleled before or since for its depth of sound and vision. Given focus by the arpeggiated trance that drifts in and out of the mix, the track progresses through several passages including a few surprisingly melodic keyboard lines and an assortment of eerie Moog and Mellotron effects, gaseous explosions, and windy sirens. Despite the impending chaos, the track sounds more like a carefully composed classical work than an unrestrained piece of noise. While the title track takes the cake, there are three other excellent tracks on Phaedra. "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares" is a solo Edgar Froese song that uses some surprisingly emotive and affecting synthesizer washes, and "Movements of a Visionary" is a more experimental piece, using treated voices and whispers to drive its hypnotic arpeggios. Perhaps even more powerful as a musical landmark now than when it was first recorded, Phaedra has proven the test of time.

I had this idea for Interactive entertainment or was it already programmed into me?hope to see more of these in the future an interactive series perhaps; imagine an interactive Game of Thrones: does Joffrey die or does he live?do the white walkers break down the wall or does the wall remain? series could go on forever in the sea of choices already made it would be up to the writers to create the vast arena for which everything would play out in. This was an excellent idea I think perhaps we're all connected in some way and this idea was out there the idea floated down to me but I wasn't able or didn't have the skills to put it into play I'm glad it's made its way onto the scene. I still have to watch the episode a couple times to see if there are alternate endings.

My first time hearing this was when I was 17 years old while taking 4 hits of LSD alone in the dark laying in bed with headphones. It was quite an amazingly unforgettable experience and influential in making the decision at a young age to never deviate from my personal vision of what I want to do with my life. I'm 43 now and never giving up on how I want to live my life is beginning to pay off in very rewarding ways.

The phrase is overused a lot, but my heart truly is broken. One of my true musical heroes, one whose music with Chris Franke & Peter Baumann back in the summer of 1974 quite literally changed my life, and set my feet firmly onto the path of becoming a fanatic for what I refer to as Electronic New Age Music. I so hoped to have the chance to meet, shake hands with & thank Edgar for the music of Phaedra and Rubycon, among so many other great albums. A true pioneering spirit, a visionary, and from what I've read, a genuinely good human being overall. Go with God into the Great Beyond, mein freund, and play for the angels. :'(

SheilahAnn Hatcher-Keziah It warms my heart when anyone discovers such great music as this- just as I keep on discovering great new, or old material all the time. Have you checked out some more of TDs catalogue? For something a little similar, how about Rubicon and Richochet, two albums from the following year?. Or a little later down the line, Tangram is a brilliant, 20 min electronic symphony from 1980. 'Love on a Real Train ' from the Risky Business soundtrack from '82 is another standout track, which you may well have heard before. Any good musical tips are always welcome from my side to . Comme les premières lumières du crépuscule, cette œuvre sonore ouvre les yeux à de vieilles promesses et à toutes les anomalies bienfaisantes de la nature. I am here with Tangerine Dream skirting the atmosphere. it's a big ship, creaking and complaining. Five miles/Km long, it's a bitch to fly. Who gives a shit what we will find, I'm here for the rush. That's what I felt when I bought this album. Sorry to disappoint you naysayers. No drugs, no alcohol. Just somewhere else to go, an altered state. I'm 56 years old now, first heard this at 17. Tell me something that can do this to you over 40 years. It's a soundscape, a beat that alters your mind. Genius.

You must listen to their music on headphones ,the music is 3D ,totally amazing ,in one ear out the other to another ear you never knew you had, such is the genius of their music ,! Dare you to just lie down, get a pillow , turn off the lights ,put on your headphones... I did this in 1976 it blew me away ,with now better technology you might end up on the edge of a Black Hole ,try it ,this music was designed to be 3D...still way ahead of anything! Edgar Froese made 3d music , no-one since has really done this pretty much like landing on the moon ! Try it ,it can be scary ,it can be almost out of body ,and if you have a smoke you might well leave the Universe best do without ! Seen them play live many times ,first time in 74 ,maybe 10 times after ,they can play all instruments live ,piano, guitars ,drums ,vocals , Amazing Band !

Sebastian H. M .Murdock- If this is your own summary and appraisal of the album then I commend you for it. I like your comparison to classical compositions- I always thought that Tangram (especially pt 1) was much like an electronic symphony, in several distinct parts. Did you know that Phaedra made it into the UK top 10 albums charts for a few weeks in 1974?-surely one of the most surprising, unusual, but deserving albums to do so. Just to make a pedantic point ( I can't help it)- Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares is actually a track, or a piece, rather than a 'song'. No lyrics you see. I was going to enter into the World Pedant of the Year Championships, but they made a spelling error on the application form, so it put me right off! Happy listening.
