Paraíba tourmaline, discovered in Brazil the 1980s, took the gem world by storm. Neon blue to greenish-blue and colored by copper, they were gems unlike any other. It was a pleasant surprise, therefore, when other glowing, copper-colored tourmalines were discovered in Mozambique and Nigeria in the 2000s. Since then, all tourmalines with these characteristics have been known as Paraíba tourmaline. What is the history behind these finds and the science behind their beauty?
