Tank Museum Historian David Fletcher presents a Tank Chat on the Carrier, Tracked, CT20, otherwise known as the Oxford Carrier. This unusual vehicle was an early post-Second World War British Armoured Personnel Carrier and Gun Tractor, which saw service in the Korean War. David also touches upon the Cambridge Carrier, built by Rolls-Royce as an updated and improved version of the Oxford, which never got out of the prototype stage.

When I served in Germany 1950/51 with 1QRR we had half a dozen Oxford’s used for towing our 17pdrs.. Previously when we had 6pdrs I believe they were towed by the Universal Carrier. The Oxfords were quite massive and unlike the Universal Carrier they had a metal tubular frame to support a canvas cover to keep the crew dry in the rain. As a foot slogger we was quite envious!

The Cadillac V8 and hydromatic transmission was a well liked and well proven drive system in US vehicles. It was used in the M-5 and M-24 tanks. An older friend was a crewman on an M-24 in Europe in the early 50s and he said that the tanks were very reliable, easy to maintain, and easy to drive because of the automatic transmission.

1:42 the 4.2 inch mortar; haven't heard a historian mention one of those before - which yet again proves the worth of David John Fletcher, MBE. The U.S. Army used 4.2" rifled(!) mortar - the "Four-Deuce" - for 50 years in two types: M2 and M30.
@johncoffin9354
@johncoffin9354 3 года назад
That's the same one. The U.S. essentially licensed the British design. I don't know if they were interchangeable. There's a story of a battery of 4.2s, in their truck, coming under fire from a battery of 88mm guns. They hauled off the road, set up the mortars, and silenced the German gunners.

@@jimmehjiimmeehh9748 yes, at least for live HEAT/HESH ammunition as the thin sheet metal of a grind training target usually won't be hard or stiff enough to set off the fuse, and you need to train with the live rounds occationally so that the troops know what an actual hit effect looks like. If all you have seen is practice shell plinkers, you might not know the difference between a damaging hit and one defeated by the blast of the targets ERA or APS as you would only know that your shell will go boom on hit, but not how that boom looks like compared to other things that go boom.
