I don't know the stats but I would venture that the Stug lll and Panzer lV accounted for most kills of Soviet tanks.

Some tankers called it a door knocker. But with good aim, they could jam the turret of a T-34 and outmaneuver it after tearing up the drive sprocket. Then shoot up the rear.

@@goldenhawk352 I'm glad we can talk about as history. As a small boy in 1960, I lived in Munich. There were still hundreds of destroyed buildings that hadn't yet been torn down. Guys on the street of an age to be veterans had a lot of amputations. I'd seen one or two amputees in my whole life, never one or two in a ten minute walk. That was the aftermath of what your uncles and grandfathers survived. In honor of the dead of all armies, I hope we never have another like it.

Honestly, while he is competent, David Willey cant compete with David Fletcher. His dry humor sets his presentations much higher than that of his counterparts.

I heard of a funny story involving the Kazan tank cooperation. The Germans brought over some of their test designs relatively late in the cooperative effort and the Soviet officers asked "where were the heavier tanks". The Germans said that those were the heaviest ones ready for production. Leaving the Soviets to think they were lying, but in fact it was the truth.

@FedorovAvtomat The Soviets were a few years ahead of the Germans in terms of tank designs and the tactics & operational use of armored units. While the Soviets would reach for a universal tank-T-34 and Germans fell into splitting their tanks into the Pz III & Pz IV. And the Soviets would produce a heavy tank-KV-1 long before the Tiger I.

@yes I understand your enthusiasm towards German panzers i am myself a great enthusiast actually (I am German after all). However we can't deny the fact that the T34 had excellent armor for the time, which the standard German Pz-III had very much troubles penetrating. The standard 37mm anti-tank gun was totally useless against it. The short 50mm /42 gun couldn't penetrate the front at all, and the side only with special ammunition, which was always in short supply. So the early German tanks (such as the Pz III) had a very hard time knocking out the T34. The T34 on the other hand, had no problem killing German tanks. The dual-purpose 75mm gun could penetrate the front of the Panzer III at any combat distance. However, it is important to note that most German tank men were far better trained and had modern radios to communicate(which was essential in modern war) The 34 relied on primitive methods from WW1 without access to radios or the ability to conduct coordinated attacks (again, due to poor training) this unsurprisingly led to many more t 34's get destroyed despite the fact it was a superior tank, it proved that having good tactics and training was far more important. But, you are totally wrong in saying the T 34 as a tank was inferior to PZ 3, that's just pure nonsense, this led to the Germans making the Panther tank (which was indeed superior to T 34 i will say).

@music I mean the t34 obviously was a much better investment of time since the soviets won ww2, or at least it just goes to show that the soviets fought even harder than i previously knew, all the more impressive in my eyes at least

@music Interesting read, it interesting how the military doctrine of the red army which didn't rely on armour to the same amount that the german army did ultimately was more successful. Especially considering that nowadays a lot of people seem to agree that the tank is an obsolete weapon of war. The soviets seem to have to constantly battle the myth that they only won the war due to throwing millions of people at the technologically way more advanced german army.

Sun_skimmer 89: yeah, they didn't expect the gun calibre to need to go up so fast! It jumps from 20mm autocannons on the II, to 50mm on late ausführung IIIs, to 75mm on IV and panther, and 88 on the Tiger. They just had to keep making the barrels longer too!

Later in the war they put a long barreled 75mm L/48 gun on the Pz IV and converted the Pz IIIs to StuGs, also carrying those 75mm guns. I guess they couldn´t fit them into the Pz IIIs turret.

Ironheade yep, the turret ring wasn't big enough. I think the short barrel had a smaller breech so it could fit inside the ring?

@Ironheade That is exactly what happened. The turret-ring's size of the Pz IV was noticibly wider than that of the III, which allowed the Pz IV to be more easily adopted to later developments of the ever increasing gun-sizes.

Much similar to M4 Sherman and T-34 which were also easy to produce and reliable and which lived through most of the war. Pz III and Iv as well as M4 and T-34 were also upgunned during their service life.

T-34 lived through the whole war not because it was so cool but because nobody wanted to change the industry to get used to a new model. there at least two attempts to improve T-34 during the war and one more before it. but all failed because of the idea to build shit but MOAR shit. Sherman was far more effective and reliable tank than the T-34

Станислав Беленький No tank is perfect but T-34 did the job logistically and on the battlefield.

When you weigh up all the pros and cons, manpower and skill levels thereof, logistical difficulties, armour thickness, mobility, size and effectiveness of gun, and a thousand other variables, the T-34 was probably the best all round tank of the second world war if not ever.
