In WWII it was common to use spare tracks as add-on armour for a tank, but how effective could they really be?
The simulation presents the 85mm BR-365K projectile impacting the Tiger II's side turret with tracks hung from it, from 250m, with the vehicle turned to the side slightly. In a previous video, the same scenario, but without the tracks, resulted in a penetration: • SU-85 vs TIGER II | 85...
The tracks modelled are an approximate geometry of late pattern Kgs 73/800/152 single-link tracks. While massive, the material thickness of most of the links is not particularly high, due to the recesses in the underside. The track material has been modelled as ~180BHN steel, with a relatively high elongation, to represent tough manganese steel commonly used in tank tracks.
