TANK TRACKS AS ADD-ON ARMOUR | SU-85 vs Tiger II Turret+Tracks Armour Penetration Simulation

In WWII it was common to use spare tracks as add-on armour for a tank, but how effective could they really be?
The simulation presents the 85mm BR-365K projectile impacting the Tiger II's side turret with tracks hung from it, from 250m, with the vehicle turned to the side slightly. In a previous video, the same scenario, but without the tracks, resulted in a penetration: • SU-85 vs TIGER II | 85...
The tracks modelled are an approximate geometry of late pattern Kgs 73/800/152 single-link tracks. While massive, the material thickness of most of the links is not particularly high, due to the recesses in the underside. The track material has been modelled as ~180BHN steel, with a relatively high elongation, to represent tough manganese steel commonly used in tank tracks.
Most of the track geometry was based on information from: panzerplace.eu

Here's the same scenario but without the tracks: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r7se7ORRiAU.html&ab_channel=SYSimulations and just to be clear, the tracks only offered this much protection due to them being impacted at their thickest, most solid part (~100mm of non armoured steel). Most of the time they wont offer MUCH protection, but if you have to carry spare links, you might as well put them somewhere useful.

In this case, it’s the difference between a complete penetration and a non-penetration(though likely with damaging spall). If the Soviet projectile was of a hardness more in line with other combatants, I’d guess the effect would be a lot less pronounced. The round seemed significantly disrupted before it even reached the armor face. In the future, it might be useful to make track links with more tungsten alloy…

I have heard it said that during firing tests conducted already during WW2, it was found that track links, sandbags, tools etc. were almost inconsequential in reducing the effectiveness of AP rounds. But, the track links had to be carried somewhere on the tank, so why not put them in a place where they might, just might, make the difference between life and death in some very special case. Logs on the other hand were never meant for this purpose. They might reduce the effectiveness of an anti-tank rifle round somewhat, if even that. They were simply carried on the sides of the tank or SPG because that was usually the most convenient place without being in the way of anything needing attention or maintenance.

How do the track links influence the flight path? I remember reading a text, that addon armor from track links leads to normalizaion of the shell. Because the shell tends to turn into the obstacle, like normalisation. This means the softer non armor steel track link helps the shell to get a better penetration angle. Can you test that out with and without track links with an overview of the shell angle with a middle line? For comparision and ... science.

@jonaslavicka2411 Год назад
remember your telescopic APFSDS idea, it would be interesting how it does against ERA, especialy in comparison to normal APFSDS
@aqui1ifer
@aqui1ifer 11 месяцев назад
This also shows one of the minor downsides of track armor: the softer metal changes the angle at which the shell would impact on the proper armor, even if very slightly. You can see the change at 0:29 and the shell “normalizes” before it hits the armor proper. A higher velocity shell like from a 90mm T15 might be aided by the tracks in this case
@anteshell
@anteshell 11 месяцев назад
The shell barely twitches. Certainly does not "normalize", assuming you mean by that that the shell direction turns towards the geometric normal of the armor. You make one fatal error in your comment. You completely ignore inertia. The direction of the kinetic energy from the shell does not change when the shell turn. If the faster shell "normalizes" towards the armor, it would suffer even bigger loss of energy, because it would then be moving sideways instead of axially, enlarging the area of impact, making it less likely to penetrate.

At least in the modern day, the practice of carrying extra track links on the hull itself is more of a measure of trying to be up and running more quickly than actual armor. APFSDS and ATGMs dont really care about a couple centimetres of magnesium alloy, but it can be the difference between thirty minutes of labor to break track and put a new link on, or waiting three hours for a recovery vehicle.

Spaced armour and shaped charges don't really work like that. This is a common misconception. The sideskirts on most German vehicles, for example, were meant to stop anti-tank rifle shots, not SC. According to this channel, I think, concrete actually normalizes (forces the shell more perpendicular to the armor) a shell instead of deflecting it. Due to armor being more effective when angled, this meant that concrete usually wasn't a good idea against bigger guns (which the germans had in spades). I think its far more complex than a simple it will or wont help, seen as the geometry of a track is non uniform. There's a US DTIC report on spaced armour which, iirc, determines that spaced plates can be beneficial as well as detrimental, depending on how large the gap is between them relative to the shells length (a large gap is bad because the shell will be able to normalise when exiting the first). However some tracks lie closer to the armour than others, and hitting the top of a pin/tread (like this video) would have a different effect than hitting the bottom (where it would likely normalise slightly)

@@SYsimulations Isn't the gap size effect by also the nature of the projectile? Or I'm just imagining stuff? Unfortunately, yes. People have been trying for long to create a 7,62mm MG that can go through 12 or even 11mm of armour, but no luck so far. :D

Most Apfsds rounds do spin slowly but if they spun at the speed of normal AP rounds then they would decelerate faster, with no benefits to stabilisation. (Spin stabilisation only works below a L/D ratio of ~7)

I've heard this myth that have softer "add on armor" (tracks, sandbags, etc) could actually normalize the projectile into a better angle. Is there any validity to this?
@Rudeljaeger

Yes, but not shells. However it helped shaped charges from Panzerfaust to project their plasma streams at a better angle.

Do you think you could test tracks on a angled surface that acpr doesn't penetrate/bounces off? I've wondered if it actually would help the apcr not ricochet.

I wonder how used work hardend tracks would fair vs new "softer" ones. Would probably be non noticable.

Dayum, 250m, that's extreme close quarters even for WW2. Would love to see a shot from the King Tiger against the SU85 UFP with tracks at 1500m :)

If you believe those tracks were put there for Protection then you should be asking yourself why didn't they use more an cover the turret sides! The Answer is they weren't used for protection..

Yeah sure, the tracks might've stopped the shell from punching through... but if I were the Tiger crewman, I would still be wanting a fresh pair of pants if I saw that bulge in the armor

The reality is less additional armor and more a way to reasonable store extra track links. Some people don’t understand just how important having those extra track links around can be to keep your vehicle functional. And there’s only so many places to store those links. So in the case of tiger ausf e and tiger ausf b those tracks being on the side of the turret are simply because there’s nowhere else to store spare tracks links and any additional armor they may provide is an added bonus. This doesn’t go for all tanks but this one specifically.
