The most important thing is that tanker drivers live at home with their families. May be they are at home not each night, but often. And flatbed drivers live on a road, not at home.

I close to reach 24 years in trucking, I had my CDL when I was the legal age limit of 21. I did dry bulk, flatbed, dump trailer , triaxle, box truck and in 2012 I started as a tanker company driver and after gaining the confidence on how to make things work I became an OO in 2019 and even with the pandemic and current fuel prices it's been an absolute win win, I just regret not making the move to tankers sooner when I was younger.

One point that should be clarified is that most hazmat tanker jobs are regional/local… most. Flatbed is more OTR.
@vijabe
@vijabe 2 года назад
Tanker #1 made $8,542 US = $11,130 CAD Tanker #2 made $7,964 US = $10,377 CAD Flatbed #1 made $8,362 CAD = $6,417 US Flatbed #2 made $8,918 CAD = $6,844 US At least in this scenario, strictly based on the money (unknown variables concerning hours worked), the Tankers made significantly more money. A better comparison needs equal hours and equal rates of pay, whether rate/hr or pay/mile or percentage.
@lilripstaSSF4
@lilripstaSSF4 2 года назад
Tankers work a lot more than us open deck guys. Open deck we don’t drive as much and we get heavily compensated. When I was a company driver I worked maybe 43 hours a week and made 1800 gross
@vijabe
@vijabe 2 года назад
@@lilripstaSSF4 Depends on what kind of freight the tanker is pulling. Some drive more miles, work harder. Some spend a lot of time waiting around to be cleaned out. At least in the scenario above, as explained/insinuated in the video, the hours were approximately the same. But again, one needs to have a better/more equal comparison. Need to have a tanker vs flatbedder where both are home every night/weekend; regional home every weekend; etc. A tanker might "work" a lot of hours, but drive a lot fewer miles (e.g. waiting to get cleaned out). A flatbed might be hauling construction materials or instead hauling specialized equipment. As for "more work", flatbed often requires considerably more physical work than tankers. Always tradeoffs. Regardless, both generally make more than van/reefer, and both require someone willing to work a little harder/take more risks. (edit) The company one works for can obviously make a big difference too. A tanker can work for a shit company and not be paid well, while the flatbedder works for a great company, making bank. Or vice versa. One's specialty can also be more susceptible to ebbing and flowing of freight, so in the short term one makes much better pay than the other, while at other times the pay is more equal. All kinds of variables one needs to consider.

Tanker drivers pay period was 2 weeks (14 days), then you multiplied by 2 and called that monthly earnings (28 days). Then Flatbed driver pay period was 15 days, so when you multiplied by 2 it was for 30 days. So not a equal days comparison. Always calculate weekly earnings and multiply by 4.33 to get monthly earnings. It's amazing how many people think there's only 4 weeks in a month.

So the 1st tank driver is making $35/ hr and 2nd 33/hr on an average, not sure how many hours the flatbed drivers were in their truck ? please next time make sure to include hours for drivers , any hours when drivers are in the truck should be considered , for long haul these company will always tell the gross yearly or per mile no one ever took time to calculate what they making per hour, as far as $7000-8000 per month you can make working $25 for 13 hours for 22-24 days a month taking 2 days off or 1 day off in a week and sleep in your bed at home for different job other than trucking in your city , its just lifestyle and what people preferred . A healthcare Housekeeper in BC making 21$ an hour can make that money if he or she does Overtime if they work same hours what the truck drivers are working .
