Millions of years ago, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the earth gave birth to a very rare blue-mauve stone: the precious Tanzanite.
At this unique site, this gem is extracted in extremely precarious and primitive conditions.
This film will take you on an adventure into the bowels of the earth with the miners who go down these endless tunnels. These serpentine labyrinths wind their way in graphite over several kilometres. Some miners stay their 18 hours at a stretch, enduring temperatures of nearly 50°C.
The gems found are collected by the proprietor of the mine and it is the Massais who go there to buy them. They have the monopoly of the tanzanite trade between the mines and the counters of Arusha where they re-sell them.
After cutting and improving some of these stones, a handful of foreigners who have settled in this town sell and export them to major commercial destinations like the United States, Europe, India and other Asian countries. In this film you will follow every stage of their journey.
Today, the exploitation of tanzanite accounts for the wealth of Arusha; Massais have even constructed buildings with their profits. Some of them, in high spirits, throw wads of notes from the top of their buildings to celebrate their success.
Soon after its discovery in 1968, the New York jeweler Tiffany began commercializing this gem world-wide, till it ranked as the second most sold blue stone in the United States after the sapphire.
You will discover Tiffany’s creations made with this fascinating stone - the tanzanite.

These are truly marvellous documentaries, so informative and thought provoking. One minute I’m admiring the spectacular landscape of Tanzania, then gloating over the luxurious intensity of the stones themselves, then squirming with guilt and horror at the appalling danger of the miners’ working conditions. Poor guys, putting their lives at such terrible risk just so a lady can wear a pretty ring. I’d like to give all those guys enough money so they can retire. Tanzanites are undeniably glorious, gorgeous stones, but now I think, so what if it’s only an iolite or piece of blue glass? It looks just as pretty, and doesn’t have the blood-guilt attached.

We in Mererani consider this our business. No kid is allowed to work in the mines. This shown here is mostly a poorly conducted and small capital site. This is completely voluntary work. Most of the guys who work there are looking for a lot of money at once. They do get money and make their lives. These mines are dream jobs for these guys because there are many role models who have gotten rich through the same hustle road. Among these small mines sites there are other mine sites that are well equipped with large capital and their work conditions are more advanced. Now If you care about these guys you need to buy Tanzanite at Its true price or pay more for these unique stones so these guys can also get good prices when negotiate with their buyers. Also this documentary is done around 20 years ago there are improvements across board. Also youths have better jobs in Tanzania these days, there are more choices for young people. However, you can still find lots of young people going for Tanzanite hoping to become rich straight away.

Great documentary. Now when I wear my tanzanite, I think of that young 27 year old who hopes luck will smile on him. I hope it does. The gem trade seems glamorous but it is not. Blood, sweat and tears, hopes dreams and wishes are in every gem. The mighty Maasai, the hopeful miner, the children that are fed from every stone brought forth. I think of them all, I pray for them all. My tanzanite is only small, but I hope it benefited that actual hands that brought it from darkness in the earth up into the sunshine or perhaps the great life-giving rains. It is truly a symbol of that great circle of life.

@QRW Sec I am torn. They get paid so little, it's crappy merchandise and not made in America, supporting Americans. Its a tough call, for America, for poor people, for human rights. I prefer made in America, but certain things, like gems, only come from certain locations. I would like to see "made in China" mean better wages so they can live without poverty, I would like to see better quality craftsmanship which better wages and humane treatment can help with. I would like to think they are doing something we cannot manufacture here in the US. As it is, those jobs in China feed people who otherwise could not find work. It seems that there are a multitude of things made in China. The designer knockoffs are something I will not purchase, that is just plain wrong. There is so much wrong in this world, which makes this (knockoffs) seem like a small problem at this moment.

I have a beautiful Tanzanite necklace and earrings (very tiny but you can see the violet blue, and sometimes a touch of reddish colour in one of the stones) with a little diamond with each Tanzanite, that I got for my birthday years ago by a dear friend. He asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I had read up on Tanzanite that its metaphysical properties are to help expand the heart/crown energy systems in order to help one better open to spiritual evolvement. As you could have see in this video, the worker's dont wear mouth masks to protect thier lung from the dust in the mines. Child labour is very common in these mines! Most children who work in these mines dey before they reach the age of 13. Its really sad how the parents push thier kids to work in the mines. For what? A blue collor stone. All your vids are 'AAA' class! Now I love these tanzanites and I think I will buy one just to support the miners there.

A lot of Tanzanite is heat treated to enhance the blue colour of the stone. One has to be careful when buying gemstones...

Oh my good lord, who could wear Tanzanite without guilt, after seeing this.
@samuelpjc
@samuelpjc 3 года назад
Why guilt? they would have nothing without purchasers of Tanzanite. I have heard this a million times, saying that some countries or people are being exploited without the consideration to the thought that, that particular employment bis what is allowing them to be alive. Just a few decades ago, everybody lived this way, they will catch up in time, till then wish them good luck. Selective outrage won't help anyone.

@@samuelpjc yes, I discussed this with my granddaughter, exactly as you say, but it doesn’t make it any easier, to see. So many people taking their cut. No safety measures. Rich men getting richer, and the men risking their lives just to exist. I’m sorry, but it’s heartbreaking to me.

@@cazrelda169 agree, it's absolutely heart breaking, but it's not like they have too many options. The middlemen are also the ones that stabilise the otherwise guerilla life. It's definitely very sad and i have wondered why they live in small thatched houses instead of large self built house. I built myself one when I had zero experience. Then I realised they probably can't afford the time, in short they wud be willing to do anything to feed themselves and their loved ones, right now this is their only choice. Just like putting a juvenile in prison for a mistake will only harden the criminal roots, there shud be a better way of rehabilitation.
