🍕If you're enjoying our content and would like to help fuel us on our adventure through Italy, you can buy us a small pizza! 😊🇮🇹buymeacoffee.com/theglobalexpats Next up, we show you how to use the train in Italy on the way to the tiny town of Tindari! 🇮🇹 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0KSKiVjng8o.html
@@TheGlobalExpats The Palermo region. I am a first generation American, but my family resides on the Island. My Nonno and Nonna are still truckin along. People don't realize to know Italy they must get to know Sicily. It's got so much to offer. Most folks don't know about it, but thanks to you guys and other people on RU-vid has brought needed attention. Thank You!
In ancient greek theaters in South Italy, gladiators never fought, but actors performed greek comedies and tragedies. The fights began in the Roman amphitheaters, not theaters, few centuries later.
Exactly what I wanted to say as well! For history nerds not very well explained in the video. By the way the park was donated to the town after Lady Florences death...we have spent many hours in that park enjoying the shade and of course the views. We were in Taormina just before the G7 meeting, the road up to the village was of course newly tarmaced for the meeting a nice plus but unfortunately an olive grove was chopped down and the area used for landing Trump and co ....
Thanks for your comments! We did a lot of research on this and through numerous sources including sites such as Visit Sicily, there was a point in history that the theatre was used for gladiatorial games 🇮🇹 www.visitsicily.info/en/il-teatro-greco-di-taormina/
I lived in Italy for 7 years and often return. So in the meantime I follow multiple vlogs of Italy. Besides Nikki of Positano and Kylie of Tuscany you have become the 3rd channel of my trichotomy. The amount of effort you 2 put in as videographers is compelling. You achieve the perfect blend of scenery, suggestions, info for foodies and just enough views of the 2 of you that are usually humorous that the vlog doesn't become all about you! Bravo
Thank you so much Dan, your kind words have made our day! That really means a lot to us and we are honoured to have you on this journey with us 🥰 We follow Nikki and Kylie as well, they are awesome! If you don't mind me asking, what part of Italy did you live in? 🇮🇹
@@TheGlobalExpats Vicenza. I am retired US Army Special Forces, so ask a way, I can handle it. LOL As you begin your invasion of the mainland, don't forget sublime Paestum. 3 other suggestions. Fiesole, originally a hilltop Etruscan town later conquered by the Romans, It sits on a ridgeline overlooking Florence with incredible views. #7 bus from the train station will take you. Great place to stay/eat unwind after hectic day in Florence. Don't miss steep walk up to the Monastery and the Roman/Etruscan site, with a Roman amphitheater where most likely you will be the ONLY ones sitting there. When visiting Venice, I like to stay at Punta Sabbioni, a ferry ride out of Venice with a beach, restaurants and away from the overwhelming bustle that is Venice. And of course when Venice was a City State you would arrive by boat, so you will see the fortifications that protected it. When you get to the Dolomites, try a "via ferrata" with a guide. 2 pieces of advice on security...buy a battery-operated smoke/carbon monoxide device since many Italian apartments don't have one. About $20 bucks on Amazon. Also a "wedge door stop security alarm" $14 this prevents your door from opening and sets off an alarm. "in bocca al lupo"
@@danstoye3902 Wow, thank you for all the recommendations, they will definitely come in handy down the line! 🥰 How awesome, what a small world, we used to work for Bus2Alps and live in Florence, we hung out with the Vicenza guys all the time at Lions Fountain, Uncle Jimmy's and Red Garter! One definitely doesn't forget the army guys we came across 🤣
@@TheGlobalExpats Yikes, definitely a small world....funny story. The Verona Arena had a concert given by Santana that I attended with a bunch of Paratroopers from Vicenza and we had front row seats. This was in the 70's and even @ rock concerts the It's were a bit reserved with their applause. Of course we were standing up and yelling and the lead singer asked who the hell we were! Good times! I never really hung out in Florence, we were always in Venice or the Dolomites climbing/skiing. I could tell some other stories but would get kicked off RU-vid for sure. LOL If I can be helpful in some way to you-all let me know! Happy Thanksgiving!
Being Sicilan(American) I have seen and been exposed to a lot of people talking about a lot of Sicilian cities and towns. All are very nice and have their own allures. Taormina was seen by me to be a touristy town. A place tourists know because they don't know the rest of Sicily too much. That said, it isn't just that. Taormina is absolutely fabulous. Wonderful. It has so much everything for it's size. The views are incredible.
@@elaineblackhurst1509so it’s just a fake beauty? Don’t understand ur comment? Nothing about Sicily is fake! I mean great artist and people of antiquity spoke of this town and worked there! Created great pieces there! Oscar Wilde. For one example. And for a reason. Just in case the word effect is meant literally in ur comment! It’s not a facade it’s realistic for our island nothing but amazing and magical
@@LunnaJannah You have completely misunderstood my comment; we have just returned from Sicily today including nine days in Taormina - it’s very, very busy, more so I think than usual for the first day of October. We have been going nearly every year for thirty years; I do not think Taormina touristy, but it *is* full of tourists - that is what I said and it is pretty much an accurate assessment. I think you need to address the person who wrote the original comment with which I did not agree, and neither it seems do you; Taormina is indeed a very special, magical, and unique destination - La perla dello Ionio.
Another Great Vid ! Can't believe you didn't go to Castelmola, that would have blown your socks off. Maybe that's on another vid, will have to keep watching...
Brilliant video guys really enjoyed this 'putting me in the holiday mood "I must return to Taormina it was many years since I visited it ' such a beautiful town ' Scottish rock singer Jim Kerr of the band Simple Minds owns a hotel in Taormina called Hotel Villa Angelo ' another great video keep up the good work bringing everyone beautiful Sicily ' 🇮🇹💚
Thank you so much Fred, your comments always make our day! 🥰 Hopefully you can make it back to Taormina soon! 🇮🇹 And if we’re ever back there we will have to check out that hotel Villa Angelo 🤗
@@TheGlobalExpats aw thank you my friend ' Jim Kerr of rock pop band Simple Minds are very famous & really good ' looking forward to checking out more of your videos 🇮🇹
Grazie di ❤ ragazzi del reportage questo fa capire agli italiani e turisti di tutto il mondo che siamo la nazione più bella che ci sia in tutto da Sud a Nord.....
Beautiful! Love how they paint everything in such exuberant colors. That island off the beach is serene and quiet compared to the crowded beach area. Can you imagine watching a play at the theater with the volcano glowing in the background? I hope to make it to Sicily one day. The furthest south I've been is Sorrento.
Hope u make it I don’t have to imagine what u mentioned and as a Sicilian everyone is welcome to enjoy and experience our beautiful island who appreciates kindness love and culture!! U need to go!!! And enjoy
@@TheGlobalExpats I have been twice and visited Palermo, Cefalu, Scopella, Réserve naturelle du Zingaro, Trapani, Erice, Segesta, Agrigento, Scala dei Turchi, Enna, Piazza Armerina (Roman Villa Casale), Noto, Ragusa, Siracusa & Ortigia, Modica, Scicli, Taormina, Noto, Monreale, Stromboli & Vulcano (Aeolian Islands) and Messina. Friends have a house (airbnb) in Modica.
Always wanted to visit Siciliy and by chance found your vids on youtube and i have really enjoyed them but I've got to admit this video on Taormina is the best one yet! Love the place it looks stunning but i also like you two as presenters of the travel blog, i love the editing and the music works and the videography to me just seems quite professional. Keep up the good work of teasing me about siciliy you guys! I'll get there one day...
Ahh thank you so much Mark, your comment made our day! 🥰 We’re so happy you are enjoying our videos & we hope you get to make it to Sicily one day soon, you’d love it here! 🤗
I love this video! It's really well made! You've put so many efforts on making this. I'm heading to Taormina next week and your video gave me more ideas, thanks! You guys make a cute couple.
it is wrong to say greek theater but it must be said greek roman theater because the base of the theater is greek and all the rest was done by the romans
@@giancarloscevola8785 You’re right that the theatre (sic) was originally Greek, and that the Romans later made some modifications. It’s often useful however to use the name they use in Taormina which is Teatro Antico which covers it pretty well.
6:20 many thanks for featuring the lesser theatre: the Odeon. We were in Taormina two days ago and would probably have missed it had we not seen your video. 😎👍
Your photography is excellent and truly beahtiful. The clours and dafination is beautiful .what equipment are you using specially drone filming .keep it up.📷👍📸😁💞🌹
Taormina is a 3 dressed as a 9. Certainly not comparable to Saint Tropez. Give 3-4 hours there and you are done. Underwhelming pebble beach with cold water. This very talented video team makes it far better than what it is.
You guys are so awesome. Great personalities. Love your video skills. How long are you planning on touring all of Italy? It’s my dream tour! Will you guys make a detailed itinerary of everything you did and everywhere you went and stayed at the end of your trip so people can just download it and use it as a template? Can’t wait for more videos. Thank you for doing this!
Hey Alsky, thank you for your kind words! I would give a time period but right it looks like we will be touring for as long as it takes us to visit all 20 regions 😅 That sounds like an incredible idea, I have Google docs of everything we've done so when we land more on our feet then I will try and compile all of my research to be used as a template for others! It is awesome to have you on this journey with us 🇮🇹
One of my favourites of yours, as this helped us choose where we would visit. Visiting in six weeks time, and staying in Taormina during our four day visit. Did you have any issues from anyone, with flying your drone in Taormina? I've just got a Dji Mini Pro 3 and want to capture something pretty special, so making sure I know beforehand. Got my EASA certificate and EU Operater registration.
If, as you say, you love history, my suggestion would be to give exact dates for the ruins & the towns. A little less about the gelato which we can get awesome in the US That would make it so much more interesting versus “long long long long time ago”. Great cinematography!!! Ty
Can't wait to get there next month ! 10 days in Sicily, hopefully it'll be worth it. Do you think we should be renting a car or by public transport? We're planning to visit Corleone and Vitelli Bar from godfather
That sounds incredible, Kimi! 10 days in Sicily will be worth it. To get to the major cities from other major cities, the trains will be enough. However, to get to the smaller towns such as Corleone and Savoca, I think a car would be a lot easier and less of a hassle! Have an awesome time in Sicily, it is stunning here 😅🇮🇹
At 2:41 is a SLC mini submarine (called "maiale", pig in english) that was used in WWII. The italians disabled two british battleships in Alexandria harbour using those ;)
A few quaint notes: we stayed in the airbnb home of admiral Bertram Ramsay's butler 😃 Just below the most expensive hotel in all of Taormina, below also the the amphitheatre. We had a huge roof terracce overlooking all of Taormina, and piano music floating down from the hotel. Compared to Taormina prices this was a throwaway, with less than 30 Euro per person and night. Very romantic. That said, Taormina was too touristic for us. The small local market had to be found after some small alleyways at 8a.m. in the morning - lateron you cannot even see the old buildings due to all the floods of tourists by the busload. Too"posh" for us.

Matteo, I've checked if Ashton Kutcher has Italian ancestry too but no, it's Czech, German (his family name deriving from "Kutscher") and Irish 😉😊👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Excellent videos and enjoy watching each one of them. I noticed you guys had some drone shots. I’m wondering if it’s hassle free there to fly drone in Sicily, ie no police or other authorities interference?
Thank you Adam! In terms of the drone, we have a DJI Mini 2 and have not had any problems with police or authorities, however, our drone is registered with the Italian aviation authorities and also under the weight class that a license is required for. I hope that helps! 🙌🏽
Our honeymoon was in castelmola 20 years ago, going back in 5 weeks and absolutely love taormina but castelmola tops it. So very Sicilian, can't wait 😂 😂
Un bella Citta' in Sicilia. Nun sugnu bonu cu a lingua Taliano. Ma so' bonu cu a lingua Siciliano. Cu l'amuri da un Siciliano. Grazzi assai e Diu Benedica.
Hello guys, i m startin watching your videos i wish visit Sicily october next. I worry about not getting a sun day but not problem...🤷🏻♂️....what month you visit Taormina?
Hey Larry, as much as we would love to give you a definitive answer we are definitely not experts on the topic, however, we can point you in the right direction! Facebook is probably your best source of information, there are numerous groups to join that cover moving to Sicily/Italy and the process involved in it. I have seen multiple posts asking about Americans retiring in Italy so start with these groups: "Visit Sicily", "Expats Living in Sicily", "Expats Living in Italy", and "Ultimate Italy" Good luck and we hope everything works out for you! 🥰
from the min.2.36 we talk about a submarine, This is a faithful reproduction, made at the Military Maritime Arsenal of Taranto on the instructions of the Ministry of Marine Defense. of the famous attack vehicle of the Italian Navy, technically called "slow running torpedo" and "pig" in marine jargon. because of its squat shape and its explosive warhead. On this vehicle he met glorious death. disappearing into the sea. the diving sergeant Salvatore Leone, from Taormina. silver medal for military valor. to memory. " This is the bronze plaque that makes a fine show of itself in the public garden of Taormina, placed behind the slow-running torpedo. In our wandering to admire the beauties of Italy, visiting Taormina and Sicily oriented, we discovered this monument to the Italian sailor
Hey Noemi, we just walked everywhere! When we arrived at the Taormina train station though, we did take the city bus to get to the top of the hill because it is waaaayyyy too steep to climb 😂 that costs €1 per person. Also, to get down to the beach & Isola Bella, we took the cable car, which was about a 5 minute ride and €3 each way. Hope that helps! 🤗
@@TheGlobalExpats thank you so much! I visited yesterday with my friend and the bus put us on top of the hill. The city and the Isola Bella were beautiful! Thanks to your video we even ate the delicious pistacchio ice cream at Nove ❤️ great vid
The submarine is a "maiale" (pig) and it's from second world war, it's a bomb and special force scuba diver (called frog men) had to ride it like a horse and direct it against the enemy ship and try to leave it at the last moment.
Gelato was invented in Sicily and still today you cannot have a real decent gelato outside Sicily and if you want to try the best and you are in Taormina I’d suggest Gelatomania to literally take it to the “next level”.
At least two weeks - we were there for three. Palermo alone is gorgeous, Catania very interesting, then you have Messina and other ancient sites ... we will return for much more. Be aware, that public transport is problematic to explore the whole island - best, if you can, rent a car, or scooters.
