Taos Conversation: The Shifting Linguistic World of Autism with Gail Simon and Mairi Evans
The language of autism continues to change, and with it people’s identities. From a social constructionist point of view, we can ask
What came first: autism or the autistic person?
Who came up with these words and what was the context?
Who controls the language and who is controlled by it?
What difference does terminology make?
In this session we share some responses based on our experience, research and practice. And we invite you to discuss some of these questions and ideas with us taking into account your cultural, life and work contexts and experience. The Autism and Systemic Practice conference (www.systemicautism.com) that we help organize is an attempt to decolonize autism theory and practice and depathologize autistic people.
Dr Mairi Evans is a Clinical Director and Neurodiversity Lead in the National Health Service, UK and systemic social constructionist therapist.
Dr Gail Simon is a systemic therapist and researcher with a special interest in neurodiversity.
Taos Conversations are informal, interactive, stimulating, free, and open to all. To access more resources and join a global community interested in social constructionist, relational and appreciative practices, visit The Taos Institute Commons: www.taosinstitutecommons.com.
