CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Billy Flynn (Richard Gere) dances around Velma (Catherine Zeta-Jones) in the courtroom.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A starry-eyed would-be star discovers just how far the notion that "there's no such thing as bad publicity" can go in this screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Chicago, originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. In the mid-'20s, Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) is a small-time chorus dancer married to a well-meaning dunderhead named Amos (John C. Reilly). Roxie is having an affair on the side with Fred Casley (Dominic West), a smooth talker who insists he can make her a star. However, Fred strings Roxie along a bit too far for his own good, and when she realizes that his promises are empty, she becomes enraged and murders Fred in cold blood. Roxie soon finds herself behind bars alongside Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a sexy vaudeville star who used to perform with her sister until Velma discovered that her sister had been sleeping with her husband. Velma shot them both dead, and, after scheming prison matron "Mama" Morton hooks Velma up with hotshot lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), Velma becomes the new Queen of the scandal sheets. Roxie is just shrewd enough to realize that her poor fortune could also bring her fame, so she convinces Amos to also hire Flynn. Soon Flynn is splashing Roxie's story -- or, more accurately, a highly melodramatic revision of Roxie's story -- all over the gutter press, and Roxy and Velma are soon battling neck-to-neck over who can win greater fame through the headlines. A project that had been moving from studio to studio since the musical opened on Broadway in 1973, Chicago also features guest appearances by Lucy Liu and Christine Baranski.

This scene goes to show that in a court of law, the winner isn't the one who tells the truth, but the one who tells the best story.

@ColleenMcShea
@ColleenMcShea 6 месяцев назад
@@NancyGarcia-lt6hr not sure how true that may be, but I believe they also don’t want to give one movie all the glory in one year, with I think everyone at the top of the cast getting a nod. With Zeta-Jones winning and it even getting Best Picture (which is fairly rare these days for a musical), they might have seen it as favoring Chicago too much, had he also won.

@@hydqjuliilq27 Gere was campaigned in the leading category. So his competition was not going to be Chris Cooper who was nominated in the supporting actor. (That said, I believe Walken and Harris were more deserving over Cooper in that category).

I don't think he and Velma made a deal because up to this point, Velma and Roxie despise each other. I believe in order to get Velma off, Billy forged Roxie's hand writing and gave it to Mama so she can give it to Velma, who hope to use it against Roxie, not knowing what Billy's plan is.

@@p.z.arnott2329 What I think is you are on the right track but not exactly. I think Billy had Roxie write the diary. THEN Roxie had to give Mama money in order for her to give it to Velma who thought she would use it against Roxie (but at BILLY'S request). Remember, Mama and Billy are in cahoots. You give Mama $100 and she contacts Billy to represent you (if you have 5K which is a staggering 75K in todays money). Mama is so corrupt she doesn't care HOW she makes the money. And Billy doesn't care about guilt or innocence. He only cares about the money too.

How is this scene done in the live show? Does the actor playing Billy tap dance during the scene? Or was this created for the movie?
@kennethfine
@kennethfine 6 лет назад
saw _Chicago_ on Saturday on Broadway. The tap dance sequence isn't really done in the live show. The movie is different from the live show in that the action is divided between a real world and a fantasy world. In the movie, there is a gray, gritty real world where the characters do their talking and interacting, while the elaborately costumed cabaret sequences represent the daydreams and fantasies of the characters. The Broadway production doesn't express this division of internal vs. external worlds in the same way. _Chicago_ on Broadway is great -- probably the best live musical I've seen in terms of the quality of its dancing and singing -- but In some ways, the movie is an even more successful production.
