'The Conversation', as others have mentioned, is a definite must see. On TV the original 'Mission Impossible' series used to have the mission recorded on a small tape recorder that used to 'self destruct in 10 seconds'.

The X-2000 series was indeed the best and last series of R2R from TEAC. Especially the 2-track version X-2000 M with 38cm/s speed is one of the best home R2R devices ever built. I consider myself very lucky to own one of these, which I bought new in 1990.

A piece of Hi Fi history, many soldiers in Vietnam when they came home brought Japanese components they bought at PXs, etc. Sansui, Akai, etc. It really got Japanese equipment known in US for the age of Japanese stereos! Now considered the golden age of receivers!

Guido, that's a nice concept you got there. Very cool and interesting. BTW, if the movie is over 20 y/o, don't worry about spoilers... Apocalypse Now.... fun story, my first R2R was an AKAI X-1800SD which cam from Vietnam. And it was from 1972 (the year I was born). I bought it along with over 100 tapes from the grandson of the owner who unfortunately had passed away. It was a cool machine with its own speakers and an 8-track player. Also, funny, I myself spent nearly 11 years in Vietnam (but much later.. in the 2000s) so it made me connect with it. Even though, I no longer have it but still have the tapes... including a Led Zeppelin III reel in pretty good condition... Had to part with it because of lack of space plus a friend needed it to service another machine Those AKAI from this era had a major flaw, the buttons for play etc where using specially formed activators that were made in a material that gets brittle with age. Nowadays, I know some people have come up with 3D printing to make replacement. Heck, I even found a guy who was carving those pieces out of wood and made it work. Anyway, I was happy to help someone and prefer to not have the machine anymore when those pieces disintegrate. Plus I've acquired a bunch of Pioneer R2R (707, 909, 1920) and a more recent AKAI (X-360) so I'm set while waiting to find a nice Technics 1506 in good shape for a reasonable price (I know I'm dreaming). For A Clock Work Orange, one could be more interested in knowing about that luscious turntable he has... (an idea for a follow up video? ;-) )

Alex's amplifier and tuner in 'A Clockwork Orange' were also real: Bang & Olufsen Beomaster 5000 (to the left of the record player) and Beolab 5000 (to the right). They were designed by Jacob Jensen and were at that time considered very futuristic looking with their transparent 'slide ruler' controls.
@organfairy

As a side note there were also supposed to be a Beocord 5000, which was meant to be a rival to something like a Revox A77. But the project was stopped shortly before production was supposed to start because B&O found out that their typical customer would rather have a cassette player instead.........but you probably all knew that.

16:15 No. 5: If i remember correctly this scene is considered being of high influence in the resurgence of the R2R in the early 2000's. They chose a really great looking R2R and people were curious of what is that device. Some could remember seeing reels at their parents but to many it was old technology yet surprisingly good looking and of course performing exceptionally well.

Hi Guido. You do see a lot of great stuff in movies, so this is an awesome idea. Let's have some more of these videos, and with other types of gear as well. I guess it's quite normal for people like us to immediately forget all about the plot and focus on the gear that's being used, or appears in the background, and try to identify it. At least it's normal for me. Just ask my wife, though she won't agree about the normal part, and tends to get pissed when I rewind, freeze the movie, move closer to the screen and starts talking to her about the gear. "I was watching that"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "I know honey, but now it finally started to get interesting". One movie that most definitely comes to mind right away is Guardians of the Galaxy since it started the current tape fetish for a lot of people. I'm actually surprised that it wasn't the first example in this video, and that no one else has mentioned it in the comments so far. There's so many good examples that it almost blocks my brain, but I'll be posting suggestions as I get it sorted out. Stay cool Mate. All the best from Denmark.
@anadialog

Thanks! Unfortunately I don’t see much interest (low visualizations) in any case we will see. I did not put Guardians of the Galaxy first of all because we all know about it and most importantly I wanted to stick with classic movies. The old school stuff! Maybe in the future, in an episode dedicated to recent movies!

Guess Guido, my wife (violinist) was so lucky that she could participate in the orchestral recording of F. F. Coppola's brand new movie 'Megalopolis' because the whole score has been recorded in Budapest (there is a famous studio here where tons of Hollywood movie soundtrack have been made). She has picture with the Maestro and I got a signed note page of Megalopolis and a signed Dracula Blu-Ray. 😊 He was very kind, an unbelievable 'giant'.

There are a few (Ballfinger, Thorens, Metaxas), but they are very, very expensive. It will probably be impossible to make an "affordable" new recorder with the high degree of mechanical quality needed and the very small production numbers.

Oh no, I need to rectify - cross field alows to send bias without any touch to tape. In standard technologies it is imposible because we need full contact to bias/audio head because audio has to be fully transferred to magnetic particles. .. Bias head in cross field is not wearing and due to it its parameters do not change by friction to tape. Bias fluctuations (increase with every meter of tape movement) is 90% reason of degradation in recording mode and may be corrected by else distancing recording head from tape in play mode, or using separate recorder for reproduction only and often aligning bias. . I think downside of cross fileld may be difficulty to keep precision distance from bias head to tape because tapes are different, they , may be localy deformed while it decides about bias and perfomance . .

Hi, you should not skip Il secondo tragico Fantozzi, when Fantozzi covers Conte Semenzara (maybe a Geloso recorder) and Fantozzi subisce ancora, in the scene where Fantozzi covers all the colleagues "absent" from work (Akai db4000 it seems). Not the proper use of a tape recorder, but a specific instrument to create humor Btw, also in Mission: Impossible (old tv series), tape recorders have been used (and in theory destroied at every mission), but also From Russia with love, even if that was a Q design, small recorder is present
