Does my very first cassette recorder from the 70s, made in Poland, qualify? Was mono, had no extras, and worked for years. Later on I got s so called Geracord, which was the data storage device for my U880 home computer KC85. Btw, still having some Home Computers out of the GDR, and they still work.

There is an optical "Speaking Clock" mechanism in the collection that was stored away at the Birmingham Museum of Science and Technology. It is all stored in a warehouse at Newtown, Birmingham since the Birmingham City Council criminally closed the museum around 1998. You might want to see if they would at least let you borrow it. The vast majority of exhibits are stored on shelves in the warehouse and can only be viewed by prior appointment. The closing of the museum was one of the main reasons I moved away from Birmingham, I used to take my kids there every Sunday as my father did with me (he was a telephone engineer btw).

In New York City one could call “dial-a-joke” in the 1970s, and hear a daily updated joke from a famous comedian. Cost a few cents. They used this rig or something similar.
@horsenuts1831
@horsenuts1831 2 года назад
Same here in the UK. We also had 'Dial A Disc' for listening to a song. As kids we got around paying for the service in public callboxes by tapping out the number on the receiver cradle pins. From memory, it was a short number, like 16 or 116. It was actually quite boring, but we lived in a small town and 'stealing electricity', which would be the technical term for the crime, was about the most exciting thing that happened in town. Living the dream......
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 2 года назад
@@horsenuts1831 Great... now I've got to go out and see if the few coin phones we've got left will let you dial that way without paying :-D I definitely know our exchanges still support pulse dial, so the technique in itself works, the question is how advanced these modern phones are in terms of preventing free calls. The problem is I don't think there are any services with reasonably short numbers left in Austria, the speaking clock was one of the last to be shut down probably ten years ago, the number was 1503. It was neat for testing unknown phones. The next-best thing I can think of is trying to find a public phone in a rural area that still has some 4-digit numbers, like my parents' weekend getaway.

@@horsenuts1831 I think in the US it's called wire fraud or some such. "Phone phreaking" used to be something hackers would do once they figured out the tones that gave you free long distance dialing. Steve Wozniak said he and Steve Jobs used to do it before they founded Apple; driving around to random pay phones and hacking the phone system. They had homemade tone boxes in the car and Wozniak says they were always afraid they'd get stopped by a cop and charged.

You are totally correct in this context that if it works it works. But I have to admit those words sent a shiver down my spine because they reminded me of past coworkers. It will work long enough for them to walk away and have it become my problem lol. But in your case this is all on you, keep up the good work ya madman!

You've gotten so good at explaining stuff dude. Either that or I'm thick as shiv and I'm finally learning high end electronics. Love it.

This is amazing! I don't know what's cooler, the tape machine, or the telephone switches clicking into action.
