That noise on the answering machine tape is the digital code to tell the machine the date and time of the message. If you put the tape into a multi track tape player you could isolate the noise and the actual message. But regardless. Cool video, now i want a variable speed tape player.

@@sauceboy9700 They are just stereo and they use for ex. the left channel for the voice message and the right channel for the datecode. Nothing special, just off-the-shelf stereo devices that have a dtecode generator hardwired to one input. Now, as a Nerd I'm wondering how to decipher that datecode and work out when the call was made...

This is my favorite beat you've ever made. It's fantastic! I'm glad people are moving past only beats that perfectly on-grid, perfectly in tune, etc. There's a place for raw, imperfect feeling music.

I used to push the buttons of an electronic organ rhytm box in pairs and then turned up speed en added reverb to it. Later i found out how to record this on cassette. From then on i was lost... 🤣

I would assume that the answering machine uses one channel for control signals and one channel for the voice recording in mono. Playing these casettes in stereo sounds like what you just heard.

That dirty drum loop and the speed-bent ambient really came out awesome! As an aside, the beeps on the voicemail tape are very likely control tones for the recorder. I suspect they're only on one of the two channels of the tape, though your video makes the tape sound mono so I can't be sure.

Ha! @AndrewHuang you're the first person I've heard talking about multi-track recording on cassette tapes using a boombox. That's how I started recording when I was 5 years old with my Yamaha VSS-30 and built-in 8-Bit voice sampler. I haven't stopped yet!

At least I had (have) a tascam 4 track. Even if the rubber band I used to replace the drive belt needs to be replaced, again :-) Back in the day, this was my AAW - Analog Audio Workstation, lol. Backed up patches from my DX-100 (it had a cable like an old modem hookup), and made (crappy) recordings. I’m sure your stuff is better than the junk we did back then, though :-)

yOU Can FLaaaannNNGGEEEE with a casset, and also move the record head and the play head... Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebedoh and FOLK IMPLOSION did this kind of stuff on Dino Jr.'S second album (1987...) THin and DENSE at the same time... IMHO

Yes. Rewinding. Believe it or not, it's a very important step in the creative process. It forces you to be quiet for a moment and think and create before you record again.

There’s a really fascinating temporal aspect to this kind of music. The idea of setting up music that is completely tethered to the speed of playback, then altering it with different recordings at different speeds to achieve different pitches is a really fascinating premise. Imagine what you could do if you had two of them, and recorded them back and forth at different speeds to get slower and slower or faster and faster samples. I also like how destructive it is. When you’re working in a software suite like ableton, you can make a copy of your sample and keep it forever. If you only have like two tapes, that’s all the recording real estate you have. It has to breed some pretty creative solutions to problems.
