The oud player is the humble Palestinian musician Simon Shaheen, born in the village of Tarshiha in Palestine. He has many albums and thousands of soundtracks for international films such as "Sheltering Sky" and "Malcolm X" and a music for many documentaries, Arabic music with jazz, Western classical music and Latin American music. Musician Simon Shaheen, in addition to the oud, is violinists with the same professionalism and beauty. His first artistic appearance was at the age of four. Shaheen was considered as a unique musical school, so it is no surprise that Former US president Bill Clinton honored Simon Shaheen at the White House.
@@qatari84al-qahtani81 not exactly, the word "Guitar" comes from derivation of indian and persian lute called Sitar or Setar and Tar. And unlike oud, they have frets or bars to guide the sound of the strings.. Gui-tar may be short for guia del tar.. Guia in Spanish means guide. The word Citharrra comes from Greek and Roman times, but origin again is from Indian and Persian. Spanish guitar has a direct ancestry from the Arabic oud or Persian Barbat, and also Persian Sitar or Tar. All of them were brought to Cordoba, Spain, in the 9th century by a muscian called Ziryab, who was of Persian origin but born in Iraq. And the true pronounciation of the name is Zaryab, in Persian or Kurdish, which means "liquid gold" or of "wealth and richness". Does not mean "blackbird" as some writers claimed.
Jijiji no sabes nada de de música . Este estrumento es de origen árabe. Cuando los árabes conquesto España 500 años. Ahí empieza los españoles a usarlo
39Thorns I love its deep sound. Underappreciated? In terms of playing on it in western-style music you are probably right. But hey, it's a Middle Eastern instrument so no wonder that is so. There are other instruments from that region (kanun, ney...) that are facing the same situation, but I don't find anything wrong in that. I guess this makes the whole world music more interesting. That way I can choose between Arab music, Hindustani Classical, Balkan, Scandinavian folk, African music or whatever. I have a choice not only because of different musical traditions but also because of different instruments used.
Never noticed your comment under this video here (probably because I only got to know your account 2 months ago 😅) Anyway, I like your 3D work (especially the morph targets of your current model). Keep it up ✌️
GREAT. Lots of Ancient Chinese traditional musical equipment, like Sorna, Pipa, cymbalo(dulcimer)etc, have come from Mideast, what a civilization Place.
it's incredible how music was spilled around the world... you can hear arab tones all wide around the world in terms of folk music (or I don't know how this music is called). It also sounds quite tropical xD
not sure if you know or not, but the arab empire once was the epicenter of all cultural heritage spanning from spain, to africa, and the entire persian empire. the reason arab music sounds like spanish, is because spanish music is fundamentally, arabic music.
No it isn't, if it was then why is it necessary to delineate between Arabic and Spanish music, moreover is Arabic music essentially Persian? The oud was inspired by a Persian instrument and music from there? Or is Turkish Music essentially Greek? The Turks took a lot of inspiration from the Greeks when making their music. They may have evolved from there but the music styles are inherently unique.
@@danielk3919 You're wrong, dude. Persians aren't arabic, they're persians! They're totally different ethinicitys. And yes, spanish music derivates directly from arabian music, altough they have different aproach into the musical subjct, their base are the same, very different from the ocidental music aproach. Also, its impossible not to realize this kind of influence, if you have in mind that a large part of Europe undergoed arabic domination for, like spain, 600+ years. Hope i helped. Sorry for the bad english.
@@rafaellima5429 I was making an example with the Oud being of Persian descent since OP said that European or Spanish music is essentially just Arabic music... My point is that you can make this derivative claim of any kind of music, I can trace Arabic music back to Ancient Greece and Persia. That's what I meant. Of course Persians aren't Arabs lol. This kind of comment where a person tries to say that one cultures music is actually from another is extremely stupid.
@@danielk3919 yeah i mean i made this comment 6 years ago but it was oversimplifying for the sake of effect. people keep comparing music from the region to occidental and i was just trying to make the point you're making right now: that nearly all cultural productions are a result of diverse lineages coinciding
Oud is the most difficult thing in the music because its depend in your resha using , its not easy at all .. but when you know how to use it perfectly believe me you can make the oud talk , and i mean it ❤️
This man is a genius of the Oud. I have a friend named Tall Kenny who went to Morocco and studied Arabic music and eventually played in an Oud band there. The stories Kenny told us were so fascinating and so I always think about going there myself. This viddy just made me realize how much I still want to go and commune with my Arab brothers. Thx alot!!! 🇲🇦
Simon Shaheen is one of the greatest living oud players nowadays. He also masters the arabic violin, or Kamaya. He is one of the most inspiring artists in the diaspora, at a technical level and mastering the maqam systems.
Middle east is the heart of all civilizations, all people, languages, cultures, music instruments origins mostly emerged from there by either way . this is why when you hear a middle east music it make you fly to ancient world with a beautiful sensation to a historical place .
its the music scale tonality that is definitely, Middle Eastern/ Oriental, in origin. the Guitar incorporates Steel components in the construction of the instrument, with the frets and eventually strings these instruments don't have frets and all the materials for these instruments are organic, wood and 'gut' strings (Catgut, literally made from the intestines of animals) its that Harmonic-Minor scale that has that Spanish middle eastern sound there is history there btw with spanish Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) its world music Baroque music from Middle Ages europe into the Renissance has alot of middle eastern sounding stuff, especially with Bach, even into Mozart. Church music will alway relay back to Jerusalem and 'Israel" and Middle Eastern Cultures.
Yup. Lately I've been playing lots of flamenco guitar and I thought it really sounded a bit Arabic and I see this video and yup. Edit: It's just phrygian, learned the music theory
ValdrousHex yeah same here I had to spice it up a bit and needed an oriental influence to my play. You can definitely tell where flamenco comes from ehh☺️
I love his sound and his playing. He throws in the Flamenco pieces every once in awhile which fit perfectly. One time he started to bring in the Flamenco and the Flutist came in and broke it. That's ok though, it still sounded awesome. I purchased an Oud and started to learn but after a shoulder operation I couldn't play due to the pain. I still pick it up every once in awhile but mostly just look at it.... Great piece of music and great sound as well Thank You from Idaho, US
And to think many of my fellow Westerners call these masterful Arabs uncivilized. Unsettling to say the least. I know better thankfully. Arab culture is the best philosophically based in the world.
Wow, this is the first time, I have even heard of an Oud, and I am loving it. I think there is a sort of "raw' nature to the sound, which gives it a very oriental feel. A true virtuoso playing it makes it sound divine!
69wolf69pack69 This Arabic music machine is made the Latin music in Spain and South America (Arab Andalusian) and has made the oriental music (Turkish , iranien, arminien, afghan, Indian.......) and also influenced the African and Western music(jazz...) so it is the greatest musical instrument in the world

The Abbasside Caliphhs and the Ummmayuad before them ..were fond of sort of this music ..They had developed and used to sponsor the orchestra like we do in modern world.Above all they were the pioneers ocf this Arabic music that we taste these days ...Love from Pakistan ..
That's right but the Umayyad state continued to flourish in Andalusia for three centuries and they competed with Baghdad in Sciences, Architecture and in Infrastructures, those were the best places in the world to live in at that time.
The music and sound that Oud is capable of is outstanding. The way it continues to vibrate feels and sounds like nothing else I've experienced an instrument to do before. I could easily listen to this video over and over again, it is so elegant, exciting, and beautiful.
It's thrilling to imagine generations of human beings listening to this ancient music it is like a eternal jewel. My dance teachers introduced me to it. It has such a beckoning manner you want to dance to it and be it. His instrument has no frets. So no way to know where you are on the neck. I'm grateful I'm not dealing with that unbelievable challenge while I study guitar. I would give up.
Guithara was invinted in Iraq 4000 years back, there are ancient golden guthara in British musuem stolen from Iraq and another ancient silver guithara ( i dont remmber who stole it from Iraq ) . Oud was later invinted, but not sure where exactly. If u have historical resources for ur claim tell me. The flute most probably was invinted in Egypet 5000 years back, but also ancient flutes were founded in some north asia and in the Europe as well.
This is allegedly the mother to the western lute. It's so rich and has a punchy decay, almost fruity. This is the first time I've listened to the oud I think. Gorgeous sound.
Such a deep pleasure and inner peace to listen and Play this Instrument and this Arabic Music. I am Swiss and am learning it since some years - now able to play modest taksims ...
Amazing sound! To think that before 1492, you could walk over the French border into Southern Spain,(Al Andalus!!) & hear this glorious music!!...Western European musicians were greatly influenced by Eastern Sound!
Amazingly amazing..beautifully blended like a coffee aroma in the spring season , while a sudden rains hits the ground and when you layback and suddenly you astral project..woww it feels like that
It’s amazing how much influence you can hear that this style had, for example I get some heavy Santana vibes because of Santana’s flamenco influence and flamenco’s Arabic influence
dimos kratos Simon Shaheen lives in the States, many American know him as an Arabic american Oud Master, so what do you expect them to type? in Arabic? Another thing there are many Arab in USA or In the UK have no arabic Keyboard so they type in English. It is Not show off or something as you think. You should be proud of being Arab and others write comments in English to show none Arab that Arab have culture and arts.
you are the best oud's player simon you are the first and that song made me crazy and it pushed me to learn oudby the correct way .thank you very mutch
Nice to see a live oud performance. Interesting to hear it sounds so much like flamenco and playing it has a lot of vibrato, giving it that mystic sound which is the trademark of Arabic music.
@@lucidesabarreto2999 sim, som maravilhoso. Pretendo estudar mais a cultura do oriente médio para reproduzir sons de regiões distintas. Pois de forma leiga achamos que são todos iguais porém há variações que para nativos são bem distintas....
