Tarahumara 435 Miles Running Secrets, They are Born to Run - Barefoot Runner's | Future Baby

The Tarahumara of northern Mexico, of all the world cultures with a history of running, probably best deserve the top accolades for their achievements in the ultrarunning realm. After all, these proud Native Americans refer to themselves at the “Rarámuri,” which means “those who run fast” and have a long tradition of covering hundreds of miles on foot over the course of several days in order to communicate, trade and hunt.. 🙂
Here are four secrets of the Tarahumara you can use to apply to your own running:
1. Do not waste energy.
2. Work as a team.
3. Run with a contagious joy.
4. Embrace simplicity.
That was the real secret of the Tarahumara: they'd never forgotten what it felt like to love running. They remembered that running was mankind's first fine art, our original act of inspired creation. Way before we were scratching pictures on caves or beating rhythms on hollow trees, we were perfecting the art of combining our breath and mind and muscles into fluid self-propulsion over wild terrain. And when our ancestors finally did make their first cave paintings, what were the first designs? A downward slash, lightning bolts through the bottom and middle--behold, the Running Man.
Distance running was revered because it was indispensable; it was the way we survived and thrived and spread across the planet. You ran to eat and to avoid being eaten; you ran to find a mate and impress her, and with her you ran off to start a new life together. You had to love running, or you wouldn't live to love anything else. And like everyhing else we ove--everything we sentimentally call our 'passions' and 'desires' it's really an encoded ancestral necessity. We were born to run; we were born because we run. We're all Running People, as the Tarahumara have always known.

I agree w/ most of the statements. However, what's important to note is that the Tarahumara do NOT run barefoot. That's a misnomer. They wear sandals when they do long-distance running, as shown in this film. The sandals themselves are relatively thick rubber. Even so, the people interviewed are right that modern shoes have too much support and don't allow your feet to give you necessary feedback. They weaken your feet. After buying sandals designed for more natural walking/running, my feet got really strong. It took me a while of feeling some arch pain. But eventually the arch got strong. Now, if I wear a traditional shoe, I get arch pain because my arches want to flex but are restricted. So I have to buy shoes that have very little arch support and wide toe boxes. :) And even then I notice my feet scrunched up a little.

This whole video feels like a vegan advertisement. They constantly miss characterize the diet of these people and why they can run so far. These people absolutely eat meat, but the creators of the documentary would love you to believe that these people only eat a plant-based diet. There are many reasons why these people can run further than we can today. One of those reasons is that they don’t cram their feet into pointed shoes that crush your toes. They also don’t have shoes with an absurd amount of cushion that slowly weekends your foot and shortens your Achilles and weakens you arches. From a young age these people are running and walking in a much more natural environment then we do today. The majority of modern people are walking on perfectly flat ground, which is deadening many of the muscles in our feet that allow us to run for so long. There are many reasons why these people can run so far and for so long. One of those reasons is their diet but they’re absolutely not vegan or vegetarian.

If you don't have sufficient access to meat, meat becomes precious and you try to find other sources to feed you. But to imply that eating certain plants are the basis of the running accomplishments of the Tarahumara can only be considered "plant based propaganda". "They eat meat, whenever they have access to it" Put differently: They eat plants only because they don't have enough meat.
@mikemikemikemikemikemeup
@mikemikemikemikemikemeup Год назад
Yeah, this video is definitely misleading and clearly trying to push a plant-based diet as the end all be all. In reality, these people eat so much plant-based food because they don’t have as much access to meet. In times when they have more meat, they would absolutely eat a bunch more of it. Just because they eat less meat doesn’t necessarily mean that they eat a full on Plant based diet. What this tribe actually says about us is that we should probably eat less meat. As a people nowadays we eat an over abundance of everything. So it would be more accurate to say that we should cut down on our over abundance of meat and add more plant-based foods into our diet. But that doesn’t mean we should throw out all the meat that we eat.

But that doesn’t mean we should throw out all the meat that we eat." I can see how you think this but it's really the opposite. Meat intake in the west has reduced but health problems have increased. We also see that those that go on meat only diets have significant improvement in issues. Yes cutting out processed foods and oils (canola/soy bean) goes a long way and I'm sure that's a part of the problem. But reducing meat intake is exactly what the propaganda is asking for. I was Vegetarian for 7 years and honestly everything improved when I went meat based. This makes sense too, there's simply a lot of forms of vitamins/minerals and building blocks that are simply more bioavailable from meat. What I want to see, is ways of reducing wasting meat. I see meat on supermarket shelves and sometimes it's near rotting. I think this is absurd that the most precious human nutrition is sold at such a high price that a large quantity of it, rots. The San bushmen live the same way, a scarcity diet is not a thriving diet. The human body is amazingly resilient and capable, that is what this tribe shows us.

@@stingrae789 I have heard this and it makes a lot of sense. I’m not sure what is the perfect diet but you make good points. My comment was mainly to say that this video is misleading. But I do still think people need to eat more healthy foods and get away from the junk we eat. That’s all I was trying to say with my comment. I’m not a nutritionist so I don’t know it all but I can see BS when it’s shown to me and this video is propaganda for sure. Thanks for the reply.

It's very easy to say these people are super healthy living on a diet of almost exclusively corn and beans -- and no doubt they are -- and imply that we "weak Americans" should do the same. But these people have lived this way for their entire lives and have not been tainted by all the synthetic crap, food additives, artificial fragrances, and "vaxines" (purposely misspelled) we have to endure from birth onward. It's not a one-to-one comparison. (And for those who'd like to argue, I tried going pescatarian for over two years and I nearly died. I was emaciated and constantly hungry, even after eating a huge salad and "beyond meat" dinner. Had I continued I would not be here to write this now.)

Yeah, I think they’re diet is a part of it but that’s only one part of the reason why they can run so far. They also live out in nature, which is what our bodies were made to be in. They don’t wear overly cushioned shoes that crush your toes into a point and shorten your Achilles tendon. And from a young age, they get real world exercise by walking and running in our natural habitat that humans are made for. Their diet is really only one part of the many reasons why they can run so far. But I think this video is out to push the narrative that a plant-based diet with no meat is better for you, so they’re not really looking to be honest about why these people can run so far.

@Christopher Stevenson I read in several articles that their main sources of meat are chicken and fresh water fish. I’ve seen them eating chicken and fish in videos. In any case. They eat meat. Just less than western people or the U.S. But that’s not saying much. The U.S. is ranked as number 3 highest meat consumers. Chicken and fish is abundant and prevalent in most central/south American and Caribbean countries. The plants they eat are even more abundant. Just seems to me that some are trying to paint them as almost vegan or vegetarian and that is simply not accurate.

They do but not so much as average mexican/american as it clearly shows mostly they eat what they consume and breed. Ofc if they go to the city, they would try to eat some local food as when any of us go to a place, we get to enjoy the local food and maybe even take some but as u saw, there wasn't any fridge. All its handmade right away and animals (i mostly just saw hens) slaughtered right awat.
@mikemikemikemikemikemeup

Yeah, this video really feels like they’re trying to push a vegetarian or vegan diet pretty hard. When in reality, these people are hunter gatherers. They are eating plant-based foods because they’re abundant. They will mix meet in when they can and if they are fortunate enough to get more meat, they will eat more meat. It’s unreasonable to assume that these people could survive off of fruits and vegetables alone, especially in the wild. In modern times, we can live off of vegan or vegetarian diet but that’s only because of the technologies we have nowadays. Supplements and plant-based fake meat that are packed with nutrients are the only realistic way for a lot of people to live off of a vegan or vegetarian diet. I know there are some people that can have a fully vegan diet and have no issues but I believe that’s the outliers.

Cool video. So many of the comments seem to lean towards accusations of propaganda for vegan/vegetarian diets. My take away is that the producers are merely highlighting aspects that seem to be a stark contrast from modern, American (in my case) approaches to both lifestyle and considerations towards athleticism (training, general sports psychology, and technique). Yes, some of that includes diet. It is true that a healthy proportion of modern thinking tends toward higher fat and higher protein diets for training in things like endurance sports. Tarajumara diets tend towards a higher percentage of complex carbohydrates, less animal proteins, and generally just less food- stuff that does have an impact on how the body receives, stores, and burns energy. The video isn’t making the claim that they have plenty of meat on hand and in abundance but just choose out of ethical reasons to abstain. Regardless of why the Tarajumara are eating the way they do (necessity due to availability), the fact remains that they still eat lean and clean with animal proteins making up a considerably smaller percentage of the average diet than, say, the typical American diet. For things like distance running, food and energy sources play a large roll how the body performs. It would be silly for the producers to just gloss over something as culturally significant as diet when talking about the effects on distance running. Likewise, diet is HUGE when discussing cultural anthropology. Diet, art/mysic, pastimes, ceremony… But, for those brave souls that stuck through the all of 3-4 minutes of diet talk, the video did spend considerable time on: the effects of footwear on running form; the cultural significance of running; philosophical considerations on running as a competition; psychological effects of mood on running. If you look for pi, you’ll see pi everywhere. Doesn’t mean it’s there or has any relevance. Same goes for propaganda and conspiracy. For those who haven’t read it, I highly recommend Chris McDougall’s Born to Run (he and a few of the main subjects of the book are featured prominently in this video). It’s a fantastic read. And for those who find discomfort in hearing how other cultures have different diets and how that can contribute to the body’s performance, diet really only takes up a handful of pages out of the nearly 300-page book.
@thewills12
@thewills12 Год назад

This feels like vegan or vegetarian propaganda. By calling this a primarily vegetarian diet feels like they’re trying to push that agenda a little bit. They really are hunters and farmers. They eat, grains, and fruits and vegetables because they are more readily available. And with what meat they’re able to get, they mix that in with things or if they ever where to get a surplus they could have larger meat meals. Having more fruits and vegetables and other things other than meat is definitely good. But it feels like they’re trying to use this tribe to get people to be vegetarian or vegan. These people still eat meat don’t let them tell you otherwise. By calling this a primarily vegetarian diet, they are basically framing their diet differently to try to get their point across that vegan or vegetarian is better. When in reality, these people are omnivores like we all are, and we need both plant and meat products to survive in the wild. In modern day, you can definitely get away with vegan or vegetarian because of other technologies that we have but in the wild we’ve seen many times that it doesn’t work out that well.

the guy who talks about the ball game they play makes little sense - if it was a game derived from hunting to teach necessary hunting skillstheir diet would reflect that but everybody else notes how they mainly grow crops and serve a little protein in the form of domesticated livestock - i think there is a preconception at play

The Music is so distracting and becomes quite irritating, please make it stop. I want to hear what he is saying Mute and reading the CC is all I can do to finish this. Why torture people and destroy your message.

Right, the information about diet is totaly misleading. What about hunting? "The Tarahumara commonly hunt with bow and arrows but are also known for their ability to run down deer and wild turkeys. Anthropologist Jonathan F. Cassel describes the Tarahumaras’ hunting abilities: "the Tarahumara literally run the birds to death in what is referred to as persistence hunting" That's, probably, because "they don't need meat"😁

It’s weird this guy in here towards the beginning says something like ‘“it’s not true you have to eat lots of meat to be in athletics” b/c MOST athletes eat a carbohydrate-heavy aka ‘plant-based’ diet. In fact, most non-athletes do too.😂. The only athletes who may consume heavy animal protein would be heavy duty power lifters. And any diet high in carbohydrates is ‘plant-based’ by default.

I love learning from others. But make no mistake, modern agriculture has made food plentiful enough for people to complain abot it.
