I mean black actresses have been speaking on this way before Monique - and they continue to. The difference is, they were speaking to the issues that actresses as a collective face. Her gripe seemed to be pertaining to herself. Even during the strike her focus was her individual lawsuit, while other actors were striking for change in the industry as a whole.

All I heard the director say is “we may not pay you what you’re worth but at least your work will inspire people throughout the nation” which is proving her point. Taraji KNOWS she can inspire people, hell. Look at all of years of experience she has. She should be paid based off of her VALUE. Giving her flowers does not pay the bills!

After reading these comments. Y’all don’t know this but black women work 10x harder in the entertainment industry. Taraji was making $175,000 episode and Terrence was making $325,000. And he complaining about his pay. 😂 She was the main character on the show and the views was higher than big bang theory. She would have to make 6 episodes of empire to make one episode of big bang theory salary. Angela Bassett makes $450,000 per episode on 9-1-1 make her the highest paid black women on television in 2022 😒while white women was fighting for $600,000 -$1 million back in 1998. Black women never get treated right in television industry. And they both was on top tv shows in America.
@camillewright7914
@camillewright7914 4 месяца назад
Don't be mad at him. The guy from house of cards was making double both their salaries COMBINED plus more per episode and yet empire had triple the viewership. On top of that CCA who is the management company for both of them was contracted I'm at a third of what they were making versus the traditional 10-15% of typical agents. Terrance Howard deserved to make more because other male actors who were the Lead of their series were hitting a million an episode with none of the numbers. Taraji as well deserves a huge salary because as the lead actress of a hit series she should be paid her value. And before empire she was on Person of Interest as the 3rd Billed and Female Lead. The show was hitting 10 to 14 million per episode. After her character was killed in the third season of Person of Interest lost millions of viewers- because her character Carter was just that Good. She should be paid for every penny that she brings to the table. Black actors who hit the same numbers as white actors don't see a fraction of the pay
@erinnmjones
@erinnmjones 4 месяца назад
@@camillewright7914 I don’t think this comment is geared towards being mad at Terrence Howard, but highlighting the disparity between the pay of black women to even black men in Hollywood. To be clear, Taraji is a more decorated actress than Terrance. Before Empire, she was a 2 time Oscar nominated actress, had been in the business for decades as a leading lady, and still has to audition for the role of Cookie. She auditions, books it (of course), only to make half the pay of her male counterpart…those are the reason for her tears. Those are the reasons for every black actresses tears in Hollywood.

When Mo'Nique was out there saying the EXACT SAME THING all the black women should have rallied behind her. They let her stand out there on her own and look crazy. Also take your own money and write and produce your OWN stuff.
@erinnmjones
@erinnmjones 4 месяца назад
She did that with Proud Mary…you have to have a lot more than means to produce your own projects and for many, it takes multiple projects before something is successful. It’s easier said than done when your resources are limited. For most actors/actresses that produce movies on their own, if it’s not a success the first time around, that’s years worth of income that they’ll need to recoup before trying again. As far as Mo’Nique is concerned, I think it had a lot to do with her approach than anything. She was wanting black actors to stand behind her but she called out specific names, so it came off as personal. It would’ve been better to approach it as an overall problem across the board in Hollywood…in my opinion…

@filmadcamp1512
@filmadcamp1512 4 месяца назад
@@erinnmjones She didn't write and fund Proud Mary. And that's not even types of film I'm talking about. Films like Good Will Hunting, Fruitvale Station, Moonlight, Birth of a Nation, Juno, Monster's Ball.... even this year's horror/comedy "The Blackening". A lot of really good films and series that are sold afterwards, are shot out of pocket. Karreuche Tran has several Emmys from an online series she helped produced. Issa Rae broke into the business from an online series that she produced out of pocket called "Awkward Black Girl". This then provided her with the budget (means) to produce numerous TV Shows that have allowed her to provide opportunities for other actors and writers. These include the very popular "Insecure", "The Rap Game" and "The Black Lady Comedy Sketch Show". That's just the surface. I don't agree with Mo'Nique's tactic of badgering industry producers and I said the same about her producing her own stuff. But on her point about money, they could have rallied behind her on that point, or at the least highlight their issues about the black women's pay disparity without getting involved in her personal vendetta. The same time Mo'Nique was talking they should have said something on their pay experience as well. Mo'Nique actually mentioned Taraji in her plight. But everyone was silent.

Not gonna let Taraji go out like this. TARAJI, Vivica A Fox has got a hustle game going that's out of this world. From Soul Train to music videos to major motion pictures to wigs. She's got product lines. She's got books. She's got productions. I believe she's directing. She had a talk show. She had a reality acting show or something. There's no boundary or frontier. She stays getting $$ and leverages her brand to fund more projects. Janet was sidelined in music, she did films and wrote a book. Rihanna taking a break from music, but she's got a makeup line. Kim Fields has a show, but she also directs and has a line of gourmet coffee and tea. Now think really hard about what you do well. Think about every project you've completed, the training, the research, the hours you put in. And then get to hustlin hustlin, everyday hustlin. I have a list for you to look over: You wrote a biography. Can you write the Black Girl's Guide to Hollywood? You did a Liftetime Movie. Can you write and pitch screenplays to Lifetime? You did a movie about golf and another about mathematics. Can you sponsor one or more of these clubs at high schools or HBCUs? You have a hair care line. Can you add body products, nail polish, jewelry? You were Cookie Lyon. Can you run a line of gourmet cookies, chocolates, candies? You like to talk. Can you do a talk show? Can you narrate animation and documentaries? You featured in music videos. Can you story board, direct, produce music videos? You're a singer. Can you write lyrics? Can you produce demos? Can you release an EP? You have thirty years acting experience. Can you create an online acting course? Can you establish a reality show acting competition? Can you teach drama at any number of HBCUs? You've filmed overseas. Can you explore opportunities with Bollywood and Nollywood? Your name is unusual, but recognizable. Build your brand stronger! Then re-approach with leverage.

I love how passionate Taraji’s ALWAYS been about black women in entertainment getting their due. It’s coming! And for the non-nuanced thinkers saying “she’s making x million what’s she crying for?”’. She works in a multi billion dollar industry where she’s see ppl doing the SAME job making 2-4x more money, not having to audition 3-4x for roles while Chalamet didn’t do anything for Wonka, and then told that she (and black ppl In general) won’t translate to overseas audiences. It’s about fairness and she’s proven she’s talented and bankable. Why should she be quiet about unfairness? By that logic, working class ppl shouldn’t fight for equal pay, unions or benefits either. Shes upset because her community never supports her movies and without support she can't raise her asking fee... In order for any actor or movie star to receive the big bucks, said actor needs to have consistent success at the box office.. Taraji was the star of 4 back to back box office bombs recently.. Proud Mary, What Men Want, Acrimony and some movie in which she starred opposite of actor Sam Rockwell... She had some false starts in the past with films such as No Good Deeds which was a low budget thriller from Sony/Columbia. I think that movie grossed about $35 million but it cost about $15 million to produce. Halle Berry was smart way back in the early 2000s. Halle knew it was good business to line herself up with a super hero franchise and hope for box office success.. During that period, Halle had enormous box office success with Die Another Day and those X-Men movies. She had some mild success with a few films in which she was the lead.. Because of this success she received a reported $13 million for Catwoman.. When Catwoman bombed at the box office, Halle's asking price dropped but she continued on. She helped her visibility by continuing to be a spokesperson for Revlon and appearing on the covers of Vogue magazine.. You gotta get to the top.. Maybe Taraji needs a new agent? Timothee has a huge fan base of young females who are showing up to see him in Wonka. If Wonka and the next Dune movie prove to be huge box offices success, Tim can raise his asking price!!!

Now, if she leveraged that incredible social media group and pitched a movie project to them through crowdfunding that she would star in and produce with lots of other great Black actresses and actors, she could raise millions. If she asked her fans to donate a minimum of $10 towards the production in exchange for a digital copy of the film, she could raise $350,000,000!!! That's a bigger budget than Fast and Furious 10 or Avengers: Infinity War or Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End or Justice League or Star Wars: The Last Jedi or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny or Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One!

I don't want to throw a wet blanket on your comment, so I'll first state that I understand the idea of creative collectivism that you proposed and wish there was more of it amongst Black creatives. However, in terms of social media numbers, you need to account for the people who follow her on multiple accounts. You also have to assume that many of those accounts are either fake or are not actively engaged in the platform. But let's go with your 35 million estimate for the sake of my next point: marketing strategies are said to have done well if you can get 1% (yes, one percent) of the people exposed to them to respond to the call of action. So out of 35 million followers, one can reasonably estimate that 350,000 people would support the hypothetical film project. At $10 a pop, that nets $3.5 million. That's not a lot if you compare it to blockbuster budgets, but that's actually a great budget for an independent film. For context, most of Tyler Perry's films have been produced for less than that amount. The point being, although I don't agree with your math ("it ain't mathin!"), I agree that BIPOC audiences in America should make more of an investment in these type of productions at the grassroots level instead of just patronizing them at the box office.

Is this not what our very own Monique was talking about when she stated that her resume or her body of work she put in should be enough to get her paid what she's worth. Monique was taking a stance for the young black girls that was coming behind her too... And not only did the power that be put her down but, her very own community of people slammed her and her husband Sydney for taking that stance... While Oprah Winfrey the imposter and cancer of our people refuse to even acknowledge her... The same Oprah that has put her own self over a project that she wasn't even the lead in... to not even acknowledge Whoopi at alone is blasphemous...

Taraji had her window of opportunity that many actresses do not get. Shes in her 50s now and shes gained weight, movie roles will be less for her now.. Also, I think she was expecting the industry to embrace her playing this role in The Color Purple, instead the industry is embracing Danielle Brooks and D'vaine Joy Randolph as supporting actresses.. Taraji needs a new agent and she needs to form a production company so she can produce her own projects and pay herself. Halle Berry did it and so has Margo Robbie.
