The first scene in Inglorious Basterds is easily Tarantino’s best scene he’s ever written imo I mean how can a 15 minute scene feel like both 5 and 30 minutes at the same time!? Its just amazing.
@@a_cowwithlegs I'd even argue that bar scene is better than the opening scene. Both create this mounting tension, but the bar scene holds it longer, has prettier looking characters (Micheal fassbender Diane Kruger), insane acting (August Diehl), amazing dialogue ("Mind if I go out speaking the kings?" - "There's a special rung in hell for those waste good scotch") and a masterful shootout climax that ends in seconds. Think I watched that scene over 50 times First scene is amazing no doubt, but we already know the french farmer is doomed. The bar scene is more of a fair fight against britian's top spies and a sherlock holmes esque German SS officer - dude even takes out a pipe, stops the music and says "allow me to inquire".
the end of pulp fiction, the diner scene, might eek it out in a list of best scenes he's penned. "your the weak. and i am the tryanny of evil men. but im trying ringo, im trying real hard to be the shepherd." crazy genius
@@ellispiper6313 There are a number of scenes in his body of work that have what I call "Tarantino moments", that if you didn't know they were from a film of his, you would know. One such is Butch going back in to save Marsellus, but the best one is the "Mind if I go out speaking the kings". It reminds me of a car accident I was in where I realized there was a car heading straight at me at 50 mph about 20 feet in front of me - a split second and an eternity at the same time. In a strange way it also reminds me of the tension build up in Phish's "Punch you n the eye" before it explodes into a guitar solo. Maybe my favorite scene in any film. I wish I could go out that way.
Apparently the original runtime of Once Upon a Time was almost 5 hours, so they had to cut a lot of scenes. Tarantino said he would like to release the full movie one day. I'd sit down and watch it in one sitting for sure.
Absolutely!! I had a feeling as soon as I saw it that there has to be so much more footage that we didn't see!! If Hateful Eight had at least an hour more, this DEFINITELY had a hell of a lot more!!
@@adamdictatedbutnotreadkadh8719he does copies scenes, but what he does in films is what hip hop artists do in music, they use samples to make a song, the end product differs from the parts. He doesn't plagiarize, on the contrary, Tarantino is considered an auteur because he has his own style, his filmmaking is not derivative whatsoever.
@@pincmin I'm not going to argue a point that's already been argued better than I would be able to do it. I differ my argument to recommending you read about what people like David Foster Wallace have to say about him on his essays of Lynch and others.
I honestly think The Hateful Eight is his most underrated work. A bloody Old West murder-mystery-whodunnit in a blizzard with some great acting and a haunting score backing up the action, what's not to like?
It is wild that I can agree 100% with your comment and still think the film is just ok for me. its an awesome idea, i just find myself pretty bored while watching it
I just bought it recently. Love the extended cut series as well. Django is also up there. The cast in both of them is just superior. He can make me love SLJ’s character in one movie and hate him in the other
It's a great film, but I agree, nothing really stands out as memorable, and I've watched it twice. Inglorious Bastards is probably my favorite just due to my love of its dark comedy war-film aspect. He said it was too heavy, but IMO, it speaks about the horrors of war while remaining light at times. A perfect balance. And that bar scene is one of the greatest scenes ever written, along with the opening.
Completely agree I think inglorious is one of my least favourite Tarantino films, I’d also have Jackie brown much higher but I know that’s probs a hot take.
Am i the only person that actually loved The Hateful Eight? It’s def in my top 3 favorite Tarantino films. The performances and ending are absolute incredible to me.
It felt too 1 dimensional for me. Most Tarantino films feel like they have 5 minor stories lines within the major plot, and all the characters seem too have a well developed background and history; something I didn't feel when watching The Hateful 8
I think my favorite thing about his movies is just how engaged they make you. No other director besides him could make me sit still and watch something 2+ hrs like 6 different times
@@michaelhuerter1921 no no this true for most of his movies but Once upon a time... is just bad and boring honestly imo his worst movie nothing interesting in it
The point of Once upon a Time is, in my opinion, taking the darkest day in Hollywood and turning it into the fairy tale that Hollywood creates. Giving his favorite period a fairytale ending instead of the traumatic ending we got in our reality. That's the point I got from it. I would personally put it top 3 but I'd also have inglorious bastards a little higher. Great video!
TYGN I just found it very boring to be honest. I get what you mean but to me, 95% of the film has nothing to do with turning a dark day into a fairy tale ending. It’s just a lot of walking around and talking and none of it is very interesting or entertaining. The ending is pretty fantastic because of how bizarre it is compared to the rest of the film - but in the sense that it is so bad it is good. For me it’s one of Tarentino’s worst films but I haven’t seen Hateful Eight.
Great point. I would add that the awesome thing is that Cliff and Rick in the ending do what they had been doing during their now-past-glory days but in real life, with Cliff doing the dirty job and still not being noticed bacause he gets carried away by the ambulance, and Rick doing the most spectacular thing with the flame thrower but without even knowing what was going on, and yet that's how he eventually gets accepted by the new hollywood symbol that was polanski's house. I could spend hours talking about "the point" of the movie but I'm gonna cut it here ahah
I 100% agree. Its a love letter to his favourite era of Hollywood with a fairytale ending. He kind of tells people what it is with the title of the movie. I love it. Its probably my second favourite after Pulp Fiction.
#1 is Inglorious Basterds for me. There are just too many amazing memorable scenes: "Don't forget the créme", "Bon Giorno", Guess Who as undercover officers, The Bear Jew, the entire opening sequence, the entire ending sequence...
mark hastings just watched it last night for the first time. Why the hell would someone want to read half of a movie?that is horrible, you read books not movies.
Derek Amen, dude. IB is a mess of a film a spy+espionage+shoot-em-up movie with little of any of these. I could leave the Shoshana bit in acts 3 and 5.
I disagree with you, reservoir dogs is amazing:good music, fantastic screenplay and, well,mr pink. But there are movies like django that are more mature and with broader themes(like revenge, the love for his wife, slavery).I know this aren’t tarantino’s strengths but lots of his movies can give better
Could I persuade you to rank Wes Anderson's films as well? I think he's held in the same regard as a director, but by wildly different audiences. He's still a movie student's go to choice, and I'd like to see your ranking of his work.
@@loganrichar.15 Inglorious Bastards isn't a great story, it's just a wonderful succession of really good scenes and incredible acting, that's my theory on why it's loved.
@@loganrichar.15 it's like, 8.5/10. I just wish it developed the actual basterds more. I wanted to know more about and see more of Aldo and bear Jew, and if feels like it slows down in the middle. But the overall story, Shawshana and Hans are amazing so it balances out. Also Jewish power fantasy is awesome, we don't get that much of those
Man, I have to say this, even when I don't agree with you, I respect you a lot for being fully honest to how you felt about the movies, not caring about what most people would say. It makes me want to follow your videos even more
@@anandchahal6063 lmao, you bold saying it in the comments where a bunch of dumbass white people are but i know for sure u a pussy in real life and wouldn't say that in front of a black person and that's all that matters 💀
Jackie Brown always seems to low on these lists. Fantastic movie and incredible acting. #2 or #3 for me. Pulp Fiction will always be #1. That movie is flawless.
Jackie Brown is so underrated. I feel like his fans forget it because it doesn’t have many of the staples of of his other movies. It’s his most mature movie by far, no over the top crazy action. May not be his best, but my personal favorite.
jackie brown is what happens when tarantino tries to make a standard hollywood drama. Its definitely a good movie but it lacks the unique tarantino touch
Yeah I think he really meant it when he said personal preference. He seems to not like the serious ones and likes the more wacky ones. Me however I’m a dreary bastard so my list is very different.
@@jasper1142 I enjoyed it, but like every other white boy who is obsessed with films I would put pulp fiction in the #1 spot. Reservoir dogs would probably be 4th.
I think inglorious Basterds is #1, by far one of my most favorite movies. A good balance of bad ass, acting, humor, and action. I could rewatch it over and over again. I respect your opinion but to me it was one of the best besides pulp fiction
Dude I only just discovered you today and you are my favorite RU-vidr right now. The videos you put out are the videos I have been looking for on RU-vid but just hadn’t found. Your also pretty funny, thank you and keep it up.
I came here from your Kubrick ranking and I wasn't disappointed. Even though my list would be totally different, I appreciate your takes, they always make me think which is I guess the best compliment you can get when you do a ranking based on personal subjective preferences. So bravo, again. This would be my list, which would be of interest to perhaps no-one but I still put it because this is what we're supposed to do here aren't we? 1. Pulp Fiction 2. Inglorious Basterds 3. Reservoir Dogs 4. Once upon a Time in Hollywood 5. Jackie Brown 6. Django 7. The Hateful Eight 8. Kill Bill 1 & 2 9. Death Proof
The fact that everyone's Tarantino movie ranking lists are so different, shows how unique and polarizing his films are. I think it's better for an artist to have a polarizing body of work than to a have definitive list of what is and isn't their best work.
They're all tremendous, but I enjoy re-watching Kill Bill more than any of the others. All of the different directing tricks and images, the melodrama, the sense of humor, the homages to all the films and filmmakers of the past. It's just so much fun. And just such a technical achievement as well (the fight scenes, principally).
Reservoir Dogs being at the top of your list shocked me, but I’m not mad honestly. It’s one of those movies that I become more fond of even long after it’s finished. Being Tarantino’s first film, I wasn’t expecting anything fantastic going in and I didn’t get that, but I was still perfectly satisfied with it. The film breathes this raw style that I feel can’t be replicated nowadays, even by Tarantino himself. It’s a timeless film that I will love more and more each day. (Also, Little Green Bag will always be my favorite “Tarantino movie” song).
@@silentyapping I'm aware of that. The way I phrased my comment sounded as if I was corrected Graham. I really should have just separately commented that as a reply to Kirsten
Funny that your criticism of Hateful Eight is the reason why I really like it. Feels like a stageplay with major focus on dialogue (amazing dialogue in the movie btw.), which we don't really have in mainstream cinema anymore.
Yeah, but also deep in some parts at the same time. And seeing django starting as a depressed cold angry dude to a happy overconfident and sassy free person was just genius. Its so cool!
Once upon a time in Hollywood is my personal favourite. It made me nostalgic and dreamy for a time era I didnt live in. I love how everyone has a completely different ranking on Tarantinos filmography and rankings. Heres my list: 1. Once upon a time in Hollywood 2. Inglorious Basterds 3. Pulp Fiction 4. Django Unchained 5.hateful eight 6. Kill Bill vol 1. 7. Jackie Brown 8. Kill Bill Vol 2. 9. Death Proof 10. Reservoir Dogs
As balmy as this may sound and having watched all his films, I deem The Hateful Eight to be my favorite of the lot. It smartly leverages Aristotle’s unities to double-down on the witty banter and intimate tension between the characters.
Jax And given your other sterling comment in one of my uploads, I wager you’d rather project your frustrations onto others than consciously address them.
Reservoir Dogs isn't perfect but it's definitely Tarantino's best film. I remember the feeling i had after finishing it, it's one of those movies that you just WISH you could experience for the first time again after seeing it. Every single character is just so memorable, and the story behind how he made the film is very inspiring. Reservoir Dogs will always have a special place in my heart.
- Pulp Fiction - Inglorious Basterds - Reservoir Dogs - The Hateful Eight - Django Unchained - Kill Bill (1 & 2) - Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood - Jackie Brown - Death Proof
Pulp Fiction Django Inglorious Kill Bill Jackie Brown I actually broke down into tears at the end of Pulp Fiction after my first three watches. It was the perfect ending to a masterpiece that did it. It was everything I ever wished for in a movie.
Dude, you don't know how hype I was to see Death Proof as number 3. I love that film, even for all it's flaws. It's such a fun watch for me so I'm glad to hear someone else enjoys it too.
My favorite is actually Jackie Brown I love how it feels like Tarantino’s least Tarantino film, Little to no blood and guts and just down to earth real and flawed characters.
@@iftachbarnea8223 I wouldn’t say hate I just find him to be a bit obnoxious and up his own ass some of the time. I love Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but for me Jackie Brown was the one where he really broke his filmaking mold and delivered his most unique and for me his most enjoyable film.
Quenton Tarentino is an incredible director and filmmaker. Django Unchained is probably my favorite film of his. I love the story, plot, the acting is phenomenal etc. This is a good ranking video.
Love that you put Death Proof so high, I think it's one of his most rewatchable films, I have only seen Pulp Fiction more. I have faith that a man that loves filmmaking so much will continue on after he makes The Critic, which I can't wait for. I have a great respect for him, partly because he is so honest and really loves movies. What other top-tier director can put on his list of favorite films Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein and Back to the Future ?
10- death proof 6/10 9- the hateful eight 7/10 8- kill bill 7/10 7- jackie brown 7/10 6- kill bill 2 7.5/10 5- reservoir dogs 8/10 4- Django Unchained 9/10 3- inglorious basterds 9/10 2- once upon a time in Hollywood 9.5/10 (Yes its this fuckin high i love it) 1- pulp fiction 10/10
Yep, I pretty much agree. I couldn’t believe how much I liked Once Upon a Time. I walked out saying, this is his best movie ever, but you have to keep Pulp in perspective, it is number 1. Wouldn’t it have been nice though if the Sharon Tate story ended like that.
Jackie Brown gets way too overlooked in all these ranked lists, it's easily his most mature work as a director who creates people as ordinary and messy, not overly caricatured. It's probably my second favorite Tarantino.
I do thoroughly enjoy rewatching both films. As far as i’m concerned the two are absolute masterpieces with 1 being my preferred. I believe they do what Tarantino wanted them to do without fault. The films aren’t genre-bending and don’t have a particularly mind blowing story, but everything it attempts to do as a action revenge flick is perfect. The dialogue, the action scenes, the characters, all amazing. The film is what it sets about to be, a good revenge story and gives you no more and no less and it does it perfectly.
I agree. At the very least it should be swapped with Jackie Brown but as the maker of this video repeatedly stressed, this is just his opinion. I think the beauty of his films is they are all good and all incredibly unique so of course everyone is going to have different opinions as far as what thes "best"
@@datgangshi Look, at the end of the day, film is art, and different pieces of art will be enjoyed differently by different people. The likability of a movie is entirely subjective, and while some might appeal to a wider audience, there will be films that are hated by most but still enjoyed by some.
Glad I found someone else who also ranks Reservoir Dogs higher than Pulp Fiction. It has been one of the biggest inspirations for me and overall it’s just such a fun movie.
1. Pulp Fiction 2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 3. Reservoir Dogs 4. Inglourious Basterds 5. Django Unchained 6. Hateful Eight 7. Kill Bill 1 and 2 8. Jackie Brown 9. Death Proof
I've only seen these (worst to best): 5. Inglourious Basterds: Waltz is great. Ending is great. Love it. Maybe a little boring though. 4. Hateful 8: Great storytelling. Great characters. Great ending. Love it. Hard to rewatch. 3. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Brad Pitt is the best. Fantastic ending. Great story. Funny at times. Want to rewatch. 2. Pulp Fiction: Great characters. Really memorable. Really like the visual style and storytelling. So quotable. Fantastic A+ of a movie. 1. Django Unchained (fight me): Waltz is even better. Love the bloody action. Really showed how terrible people can be.
Okay great ranking overall. I must say this though as a film nerd. You say Django Unchained is too long, but if you really think about it, what scene would you pull out from the movie?
Thanks you for the Death Proof love bro . saw Grindhouse earlier this year and liked Planet Terror a lot , but was really surprised from Death Proof and THAT ending
I disagree but respect your opinion My ranking: 9. Jackie Brown 6/10 8. Death Prood 7/10 7. Kill Bill (both 1 + 2) 7/10 6. The Hateful Eight 8/10 5. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 8/10 4. Reservoir Dogs 9/10 3. Pulp Fiction 9/10 2. Inglorious Basterds 10/10 1. Django Unchained 10/10
How can you not love Jackie Brown and Hateful eight? My wife hates slow movies and Hateful Eight is by far her favorite QT movie, mine would probably be Jackie Brown. Lists like these are always fun to see how different people think from you.
