Steve Yzerman wasn't done yet - Vladimir Tarasenko is coming to Hockeytown.
Tune in as we start by analyzing the Detroit Red Wings signing Vladimir Tarasenko to a 2 year, $4.75 million AAV contract, how he fits into the forward lineup alongside Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat, & others, the deal's value & structure, how he replaces offense left by Perron, Gostisbehere, etc., & more (3:15).
Next, Yzerman trading Robby Fabbri to the Anaheim Ducks for cap space (and another goalie friend for Cossa, Augustine, Campbell, Lyon, Talbot & Husso) (13:00), Joe Veleno opting for arbitration & what it means for a potential buyout (not Holl) (20:10), and the signing of Tyler Motte (25:40). After that, his press conference, including thoughts on the team's standings, chasing Stamkos or another mystery player, whether the team defense is enough to help Moritz Seider & the goalies, how Edvinsson, Johansson, and Berggren will fit in, and what roster space means for Kasper, Mazur, and Danielson (27:30).
After covering the performances of key prospects & players like Brandsegg-Nygard, Sandin Pellikka, & others at the Red Wings Development Camp (52:45), we analyze the Savoie for McLeod trade between Buffalo and Edmonton (55:15) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (59:35) - enjoy!

He’s not prime tarasenko, but he’s still VERY VERY GOOD. Definitely an offensive upgrade over DP57. If you watched Vlad’s highlights over the past two seasons, he truly still has that offensive touch. Will he score 40? Odds are no, but with our top 6, I can still see CLOSE TO 30 (30 is def on the table) and around 25-30 assists. Vlad still has it, he’s not a washed up Max Pacioretty or a JVR, he’s definitely way better.

People are mad Steve didn’t make multiple big moves in FA, but I think this is very obviously a year where he expects a couple of 3 or 4 young guys to make the roster. Edvinsson, Johansson, Berggren, and maybe even Mazur. We need our young guys to play and get experience. Keeping Kane and signing Tarasenko were the moves to teach the young kids and give them motivation.

I want in that camp. once i had perspective. Of course i had fake hope we would get the big guys. That didnt materialize, those players were either not interested in Detroit or just too expensive. Im just hoping we dont have this habit of over ripening. Ur already seeing it this year. Berger and Johanson are only on the roster because they dont have waive protection. Edvinson is a high number 1 and earned his spot. I can see where the only time a prospect gets a serious look is when they dont have protection. And if this happens over the next couple years, u have a log jam of prospects that cant even earn their spots.

The Senko signing was so much better than a potential Stamkos signing. 8 mil a year for what? 4 years? I’m good lol… two years is perfect, and I’m excited to see Tarasenko play and I definitely think he’s scoring more than 20 goals Brad lol…. I’m thinking 25-30. He will be on the 2nd line most likely.

I need to pumps the brakes a bit on the concerns for the prospects talk. Sure, I agree that they do need to start working some of the more ready prospects into the lineup but I still feel Brad is overreacting a bit...especially when it comes to the age of these guys. Berggren and Johansson are the oldest at 23. A case can certainly be made that Albert has probably done enough over two seasons in GR to have a real look and he will. With Berggy it seems like people forget that A) He lost a lot of time post draft to injury and B) He has played 79 games in the NHL and struggled on two stints they gave him last season. Danielson has not played a second of pro hockey yet, last year was Mazur's first season as a pro and he had some injuries early on to deal with, and last year was Kasper's first season in North America and he struggled early on before coming on late for them. According to Cap Friendly the Wings have 11 forwards/7 Dmen/ 4 goalies in NHL deals (those numbers include Raymond, Veleno, and Mo because we all know they will be signed). They also have 3 forwards on 1 year deals, 1 forward on a two year deal, and 2 more with three years left. On defense, of those 7, 3 are on the last year of their deal, and 3 more have only 2 years left. There is plenty of space for the prospects who earn time over the next few seasons. Rayomond came in and forced their hand when they planned to send him to GR initially. Mo would have played after 1 amazing year in GR if not for COVID. Berggren played 65 games to seasons ago because he earned the shot then kept it with his play. Elmer made the team out of camp and played until his play dropped off. They have shown they will give young players a shot when they have earned a shot and will keep them in if they earn it. I have no concern about adding say Simon and Johansson on the back end at the same time becauss the organization has shown they are not going to put young players into spots they cannot handle and leave them there to flounder. Just relax a bit and enjoy the fact the Wings will be competitive most nights again this season and have a ton of developing talent to hopefully continue to build a strong roster for years to come.

I agree with Brad though, if the trio of Nate, Marco and Carter spend the entire 2024 season down in GR, they are most definitely playing in Detroit next year. I think a part of me concerning this year's past FA and the players we have on term is happy bc we didn't go shopping; only 5 players on the entire team have 3+ years on their contract. Yzerman has put himself in a brilliant position to mold the roster however he wants in the next 2 years which a prime window for alot of our prospects. And whether you love it or hate as far guys staying down too long or whatever you have to really like that 80% of our roster spots can be repositioned with anyone. Now you might see that as lack of a plan or whatever but that's super good for cap space and if guys don't work out in the future then there's no panic in lack of spots to fill. In my opinion after Mo and Raymond sign then it'll much easier to refill this team with more optimal talent rather than leftover FA like Evan said I think he's gonna step on the gas hard coming soon and if we regress then a top 10 pick isn't the worst I'll take those lumps for now.

Mazur with 17 goals in the AHL is NHL ready? Guy is shaping up to be a 3rd line energy guy like a Gilchrist or Glendenning. The farm is still very critically low in high scoring wingers, SY kept drafting away from that priority.

I think Detroit has the offensive firepower. Especially now that Tarasenko has joined. Yzerman needs to find a way to grab a rh def. It’s going to be tough. But that’s a glaring hole. Holl and Petry are not going to fill that hole on the second line. Left hand Detroit is fine. And have options.

What frustrates me the most is that when we don't have loads of injuries, that RW doesn't play their youngsters in e.i. nine matches. During an entire season, there are many occasions when this can happen. Most players are bang up or have minor groin problems all the time. Certainly S.Y does not want a very expensive press box. RW had for a long time around 6/Mil in the stands before they got rid of Kostin e.i. Still believe that Burger will be traded together with a goalkeeper and Velano in some package deal. Also think RW will take a step back next season, don't see how RW today would be equivalent to last year. Other teams have gotten better on paper, RW has marginal improvements e.i. as a goalkeeper. However, RW has a bad history of burning out their goalkeepers e.i. Ned, Husso & Alex. Who will it be this year?

What's funny is that Berggren and Sprong were criticized for not being so good at defending and instead Kane got an extension and Terasenko was brought in for 2 years (neither of them are known for their defense). Much more salary is now being spent on similarly gifted players like Berggren and Sprong. I don't want to say that Berggren and Sprong are/would be better, but they would be cheaper and we would have saved ourselves a year in development (goal-oriented players who could have played in the third line) to see how far we would have come with this younger combination. My main criticism goes to Leonde who didn't give young players a chance and probably won't in the future. Anyway, I'm glad we have Terasenko and Kane now and hope they can give us and the team a lot. But, what a waste of time for the young players in the Red Wings system. As you said, if it continues like this for a longer period of time, they are even loyal and stay in the AHL, then soon they will no longer be so young and we will never know what they would have given us, for the Red Wings team

Brad quickly responded, because when Evan said if Johanson can play his way onto the roster. Edvinson proved that not to be the case. When Yzerman said young guys who plays their way onto the roster, he will make room for them, is already been bullshit. You can say circumstances, i say if u say something mean it. He is going to have to earn that again by his actions. Idc whether or not their was room, Steve caused that. Nate Danielson probably makes the team and would like to see him center the second line moving Compher to the third line with Copp and Rasmussen. So happy Fabbri is gone as I never liked him.
