The auction listing for the house had no photos, rather those photos were from a previous listing, and they were assuming that the house would look the same now.

The auctioneer said the house was sold “As Is”. That means no one is liable for the current condition.

I just read the show's official description, and its main purpose is to educated people (that plan on flipping a house) all things that can go wrong in the process. That's the reason why they do/act those "bad decisions" to make viewers aware of all the things that can happen... Keeping that in mind, a lot of things they did on the show now makes sense to me as well xD

These are houses the owners lost in foreclosure ... the lender is selling it. Finding sabotage and missing appliances is part of the risks of being a flipper. You HAVE to have a hefty contingency fund to cover this stuff - their "budget" is what they plan to spend, they have enough (despite the dramatic scripting) to cover the "Oh CRAP there's water damage). And if you take a loss on a house, it's part of the business. I've found water lines filled with caulk, water pipes hacksawed to cause leaks, and even a shower drain filled with cement.
