11? 12? Probably not. An entire shopping cart of groceries, when the employee is there watching over everything, probably. The problem was with traditional 10 or less checkout lanes was that the employee was too busy scanning things not to notice a customer unloading groceries onto the belt until it was too late. To make matters worse, people with one or two items would hold them, rather than place them down, so when it’s time to start scanning the next transaction, the person who placed their items on the belt ended up having several items scanned before the customer realizes, tells the cashier, and then hands them their items, as if they had a place for them (since the belt is filled with the other persons, that they now have to void, and somehow find room on the belt for those items, if they don’t know how to suspend a transaction.) Of course, this was back when the check out screens were in between the cashier and customer, so maybe it’s a little easier to notice who’s next, as well as if there’s anything hidden below the cart

This new policy is fine, but Target also needs to have the appropriate staffing to then have the staffed lines open again. I used to work the register at Target, so I knew their expectations for customer experiences and have watched them get farther and farther away from it. Now when I go to Target, I’m lucky if one staffed checkout is open and that’s with ten+ customers in each line the self checkout and the staffed.

I know, i'm an introvert, too. Another problem is that to make things more comfortable for seniors and extroverts, they force the self-checkout workers to interact with people, even through some people don't want to talk to anyone. Target is basically the next Kmart , I’m a current GM team member at my local target here in Kern County CA … Our positions have been getting changed almost every week , hours are getting cut to 20 a week , Stockrooms are filled to capacity with some products expired or out of season, Empty shelf’s looking like pandemic era still poor management who don’t do there jobs by having accountability for those who are slacking , Workers who don’t care that they hire basically go to stock and don’t stock right basically stocking stuff on the wrong prices shelf’s etc , then you have the front end with 1 cashier or 2 if there lucky daily on a 4hr shift , the online pickup order team we call them (Fullfillment team members) also are on 4hr shifts and with 3 or 4 workers sometimes 1 if some call off , Then lastly the unloading team (Inbound) the trucks get heavier each day and the workers back there are always rushed to unload it fast (There is 1 Person in the truck throwing the boxes) while the others back there in the line are grabbing boxes and putting it on Uboats and flats .. Let me just say I been here for 3 years now and I use to work for Walmart , I have to say Walmart is superior as of 2024 and always will be #1 retail chain .. Target on the other hand is the next Kmart

Same here! The problem I see with one particular nationwide conglomerate which I will not name, is that their software is not very user-friendly for older people or the cognitively-challenged. It's also programmed poorly with too many buttons/pictures for the same produce item. The fonts are too small, and the sound is too low for those hard of hearing to see. It's like the software is written by a bunch of people fresh out of technical school who don't understand human nature.They assume everyone is as tech-savvy as they are. At my store, they once had an idea to staff the self-checkouts with two people, but someone higher-up stopped it because it cost too much money. They don't want to hire security or use better anti-theft measures because they don't want to spend the money, and they don't want to upset old people.
@hummersd
@hummersd 3 месяца назад
Nope, I'm faster at self-checkout scanning and bagging, and I don't steal. Let us have the option without the 10-item restriction. I don't mind being recorded by security cameras. (Amazon has their quick pickup shops where it's actually based on cameras and what you're putting in your basket as the checkout.) If there are X number of lines that can handle that much more throughput, it's faster. It's not about not wanting to chat with a cashier, it's about being able to do it yourself when you're able to. (Even TSA is testing self airport security lines.) The only issue I've had is the Target app sometimes logging you out of your Target RedCard which then takes a while if you're in a poor cell service area to log back in, but that's an app issue that's improved over time.

How is that going to work? There are never any actual human checkers at my target. I would rather go through a line with an actual human checker when I have a bunch of stuff but it’s rarely a viable option at my local Target. Same with my local grocery store. When I’m buying a lot of stuff, I would rather have someone else ring it up and bag it for me, but even at the busiest times, they will only have two human checkers open with no one bagging, so it takes forever!! And they have like 12 checkout aisles available. They just don’t use them.

I used to work at the Target express checkout lane, before all these self checkout nonsense, and this is exactly what people did. I honestly didn’t care. It was the people who complained about those with 11 items, mad at me, acting like I should’ve said something, when they themselves were guilty of multiple transactions. Like, did these people rather the 11 item person do two transactions as well? The actual process of paying multiple times makes the express lane slower, but whatever. It’s Targets fault for always making those lanes the very first ones by the door.

Ok, but are they going to start staffing the regular check-out lanes again? Because that's why so many people use self-check even when they've got a cart full of items. The main goal of self checkout is to increase sales transaction with fewer cashiers at the checkout. Before all this we used to wait at least five minutes per person in front of you at the regular cash register. So Target is going back in time and either hiring more cashiers or overwhelming already a disaster order drive-up shopping experience. I bet they will revert this policy in no time.
@Explorerbabe3469

I think Target might hire 2 more people per shift or just call up other workers from the floor to help. The main reason of limiting 10 items, is because some people don’t scan all the items or very few items are scanned at self checkout. Retail theft was very high at some Target stores! 😢 Some people think, “I could get away with it last time, I’m gonna increase the items not scanned and I get them for free! “No one is going to stop me anyway!” That’s why retail theft is so high right now! 😢😢

I love and often use self checkouts. But one of my pet peeves about self checkouts is not being able to use cash. Here in the Philadelphia area, this is the case with Wawa, Wegmans, Whole Foods (which used to take cash there but no longer does), Kohls, and my favorite independent supermarket. The last I checked Target takes cash at their self checkouts. I can remember not that long ago when most stores required a minimum purchase, usually $20 or $25, to use "plastic". I'm still not a user of Apple Pay and their ilk, and I still can't get used to not only being allowed but sometimes being required to use my plastic credit or debit card. It goes against my long-established way of thinking to use my debit or credit card when all I am buying is a half gallon carton of milk at Wawa, container of yogurt at Wegmans, salad at Whole Foods, greeting card at Kohls, or a 6-pack of bottled water at my favorite independent when the staffed checkout lines are long but the self checkouts are available. I hope Target will continue to take cash for those 10 or fewer purchases at the self checkouts.

More reason to do in-store pickup. Target circle is killing the 1% benefit as well though they still got sales. Just confusing to have this or buying in store manually rather than give both pickup and buying manually the same discount.

I work at Target. I know before we rolled out 10 or less the Target CEO stated that you could be the most honest person in the world, people do forget things to scan. That adds up. Plus the skip scanning. Skip scanning is insane. Before 10 or less, we would see people at self checkout with carts FULL along with furniture, all of that got out of hand. Fitting doors stay locked, and self checkout is now 10 items or less.

Makes sense, it should be 10-15 items or less in self checkout and then a full cart will go to the cashier. And basically, anything with a barcode and not any custom item/weight can be in self-checkout.

Does Target usually have one employee assigned to self checkout so don’t understand how people are waiting super long for assistance. I kinda wish T.J. Maxx had self checkout so it can help decrease the long lines and constant call ups of non-cashiers to the front. Might not work well at T.J. Maxx since if the item doesn’t have a price tag/label for some reason, it can be challenging to call for assistance and stealing will probably increase for a store that hires a security guard on Saturday.

So, about the self-checkouts at Sam's Club, they don't take cash. If you want to use cash, you have to stand in a long line at a regular checkout. Sucks if you are getting just a couple of items.

People think that self check out is a good thing until they got to jail for shoplifting. Use self check out, go to jail! Target is huge on putting people in jail for shoplifting. There is a family member that went to jail and now had to a lawyer and take time off from work because Target says he did not pay for $200 worth of items after he paid fore over $2,000 of stuff. It turns out the machine was not working right, but yet he is being accused of theft! Self check out in not a good thing! They are flawed, it's time to put people back to work. Too many innocent people are going to jail over stupid, stupid things! This is the big reason they are changing their policies. It is a broken system!
