Welcome to Cat School! Here are 30 target stick skills that cats of all ages can learn. From easy skills like jumping on and off objects to harder ones like shoulder cat, there will be fun and enriching activities for cats of all levels and abilities. Here are some answers to questions you might have about target stick training:
➡️ What is a target stick?
A target stick is a popular tool amongst animal trainers to guide animals from one point to another.
➡️ Why should I target-train my cat?
Target stick training has a lot of practical benefits. For example, instead of putting your cat into their carrier, you can use the target stick to guide them inside. You can also use it to encourage activity for indoor cats.
➡️ Where do I get a target stick?
A target stick is included in the Cat School training kit. The Cat School target stick is extendable and includes an attached clicker to make clicking your cat’s correct behavior easy. You can get the tools here:
• Amazon (US/worldwide): amzn.to/2ZUNloj
• Amazon (Canada): www.amazon.ca/dp/B084NHN1ST/r
➡️ How do I get started?
The first thing we teach the cat is to touch the ball end with their nose. Follow this tutorial: • Target Stick Training ...
Have fun training!

Have to say that target stick training is a life-saving skill! I've been training my cat for about 1 month and I was never sure if he was following me or the stick when we train, but the other day he was standing outside my window on a railing and no matter what I called or tried he wouldn't come back (it was really dangerous because if the wind blew and shut the window he would have fallen down four stories). Just before I had given up I saw the target stick and thought I might as well give it a try and the minute he saw the stick he walked back into the apartment! It was amazing

I've had cats my whole life and have never done this... I'm sad😢. I lost my 17yo, Smokey, a year ago. I'm worried that I'm too old to take in 2 new cats (that could change!) but I'm going to be fostering in about 4 months and this would be so fun! It actually might make them more adoptable, and that's the goal!

Great tricks! I have a mostly blind ex-farm cat who I'd like to teach a couple of tricks. Any recommendations? He also has some mobility issues (can't really jump).

Hi! I want to start training my two beautiful babies (they're a mix of Persian and a local Desi) and I have a couple questions 1) How long do I need to work on a particular trick, like is a week long enough to implement it in their memory? 2) Once they've learnt the trick, do I still need to feed them treats everytime they do it? 3) I've heard that you should only feed your cats a treat like once a week so if I want to train them, how do I come around that problem because I do the want to make their diet too high calorie for the sake of training?

Hi there. Any thoughts on how to work with a cat that is not food/treat motivated?
@CatSchool
@CatSchool Год назад
I recommend building your cat's food motivation. If you aren't already, you should be feeding your cat moisture-rich food, implementing scheduled feedings and not leaving any dry food out for grazing. You can learn more here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-daOFeFkyuMQ.html

Hey, I was wondering if after your cat masters a certain trick, do you need to do any maintenance with treats after a certain time or do they keep it forever?

Yes you'll need to still occasionally do it I've found

I think my cat would really take to this. He isn’t a lap cat, but he will jump on my lap, as well as objects, if I ask him to! He loves getting praise for doing things I ask, and it keeps him mentally engaged. I use a tongue- clicking sound when I want his attention or I’m asking him to come. Would this interfere with his ability to clicker train or confuse him? I wonder how quickly he would pick up on it if I changed it to mean something else.

Love them!!! Any tips for distracted cats that have a hard time when the stick changes direction? (Like then circling an object or doing weaves)
@CatSchool
@CatSchool Год назад
You could use a target on the floor and work backwards. For example, with circling an object, start your cat from just a few steps away until their paws hit the target. Gradually increase the steps they need to take until their paw hits the target. Once they can do a full circle, re-introduce the target stick. @@PerformanceTech2629 We teach them to sit at their spots like children in a classroom. One student gets a turn while the others get rewards for staying at their spots. Check out our chair training video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1kvdOyvrlsA.html

Cat School, what do you think about the use of a marker word instead of a clicker?

I want to adopt the cat, how to know the cat is smart?
@hippocraticloaf
@hippocraticloaf Год назад
I think most cats are pretty smart, but some are fearful and guarded around humans. If you want to start training them right away, get a friendly cat who likes human interaction and attention. If you get a fearful cat, it could take months for them to trust you enough to engage like this. But a hard won reward is often the sweetest. My cat was fearful and violently defensive when I first got him- but he belonged to a neighbor previously, and I remember him coming up to me without hesitation to greet me and get a pet as a kitten. ...before he was emotionally scarred. I had faith that his innate bold and friendly temperament would re-emerge with enough live and patience, and it did. I’m fantasizing about getting a hula hoop and creating a sort of cat obstacle course since he loves showing off his athleticism. But I’m nowhere near the people in this video in getting him to want to do what I want. I love the stick idea.
